  • Long hot day

    June 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Today was a bit misleading on paper it's just 18 km recommended but I wanted to walk the extra 6 km to Castro which increased the distance to 24 (about standard) but big uphill and bigger downhills. I woke at 6 but felt lazy and relaxed and didn't get up till 7. so on the road at 7:30 LA Mesa a few km down the road had a great alberges with yummy breakfast so took an extra 45 minutes there, which meant heading out of Mesa straight up the hill as the sun was starting to rise did not feel so great. Also to properly appreciate these pictures you should get a nice big bag of sloppy cow manure and take good regular whiffs to really appreciate the full experience. Honestly the primitivo tag should not be steepest camino, more like smelliest.

Anyway lots of road walking. I stopped and had a full lunch (3 course) at Grande and then ambled the lat 5km to Castro arriving about 4:30 - by far the latest I have ever been for any arrival.

not getting to bad but quite sleepy.

  • Here at last time for a treat or 5

    June 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Finally arrived at Castro feeling hot, thirsty and tired but not particularly sore.

I settled with a couple of drinks - Spain had a fabulous round of girly beers and another great local cider and the fresh almond cake. Only problem was I forgot I had brought a selection of treats at an organic delicatessen in Grande de Salime - a challenge but one I rose too manually.Read more

  • Spanish directions

    June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So I knew this would happen somewhere but today we passed the border from Asturia province into Galacia and I managed to get lost twice although an angel did come along to get me back on the path the first time - the second time I climbed a really step path for about 800 m so I was pretty grumpy by the time I got back on the path. Also there was nothing open so I ended up doing the whole 20 km with breakfast or anything to eat.

fortunately for the last piece of the walk I met Antonio an Electrician from somewhere that sounds like Mallorca in Spain. I was fantasizing about my Caliente Sjokalade which he shouted me when I arrived.

At this stage I was at cold and tired of waking in the road and not wanting a 30 km repeat tomorrow so I booked a room in Lugo and called a taxi. On the way I partly fell asleep and started feeling really worried about how long the ride was taking, it turns out I skipped 2 days walking not one. I was worried the taxi was going to be over a 100 Euros but it was just 65 which was a relief, still as much as it will cost me to fly from London to Sofia but hey the hour shower and bed felt heavenly and I'm booked for a foot massage tomorrow morning at 9. Yay

  • Early rainy start

    June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

I woke early about 5 and set off about 6 in a damp misty morning past the guard dog of Castro- its good to have a stick one wanted to come in behind for a nip.

it was supposed to rain at 1 but the spitting and most got heavier so by 9 my boots and socks and lower legs were totally soaked I also didn't meet anyone on the road for most of the day so it felt like a bit of a miserable day.Read more

  • Fantastic Spanish fruit

    June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Popped into this little spanish grocery and broke about 3 rules immediately there was a guy hanging around outside the door with one young guy in the shop, calling out a list of fruit while the female assistant scurried around collecting for him including getting on a step ladder to catch a pineapple that was on a shelf 2.5m high. So I was thinking he was a lazy chauvinistic pig while I collected a few bits of fruit and then the assistant said something to me and I noticed gloves, mask, guy outside now with 3 other people lined up being in the street. Covid still a big deal.

Well the apricots and the plums were worth the wait (amazing) the apple was inedible. Figs OMG.

  • 3 days in Lugo

    June 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

well not jealous too tell, I had bad stomach upset and slept about 8 hours extra for the last few days and haven't eaten much. I've made it to an evening dance class each day but not really eaten much.

Just had my first properish meal and hoping I can hold onto it. Lugo seems like a pretty cool town and it's fun being here for the festival I'm planning to do some wandering in the main square after dancing tonight as I imagine people will be out in force then.

  • Last night in Lugo

    June 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Well last night was fun it made me think of Abby a bit - it had the feel of a big gray party with the whole town in on it.

I got to go dancing and even went to a Latin night club and had a few dances which was nice but also felt sad as I missed my playmate :-(Read more

  • Sorrow and beauty

    June 11, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

I woke up feeling fairly intensely sad so I took some time to write some poetry which help ease the worst of it.

I think it was hard seeing all the couples dresses up having fun and thinking about how much fun we'd have here with Corinne.

It felt good to get my pack on and start moving again.

Saw this beautiful orchid or Lilly on the way to the bus station
