The final day of our South African safari. We check out of our chalet and spend some time with the Hildebrand’s. Playing cards and even some freezing cold pool time before we pack up for our drive home. We had some tough farewells (and promises to not wait another 18 years to visit) and thank yous with Louise and the kids, thank you all for helping make our visit to South Africa amazing and memorable. Sean drove us to rendezvous with Verity. We enjoy a waffle treat before returning to Johannesburg. Tonight Isaac offered to make dinner!Read more

Enjoying our last day in South Africa. Today’s outing took us to Brew Hogs Brewery for tastings and a tour, to Papachinos for some lunch and finally to the airport. Another amazing day in South Africa. Verity saw us right to security where we had to bid another farewell. Thank you Verity for sharing your life, home and South Africa with us, you made Johannesburg feel like home-away-from-home. We continued waving good bye until we couldn’t wave anymore. We boarded our plane and got settled for the next flight.Read more

  • Touchdown #14, Munich, Germany

    August 16, 2018 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

And welcome to Franz Josef Strauss International Airport in Munich Germany!

    What brought us here?
Conor or beer, maybe not in that order but definitely that combination. Arriving in Munich gives us the chance to reunite with more international friends. In 1999 Conor and Andrea traveled from their home in the UK to Taiwan which was where our paths first crossed. Since that time we have visited each other’s homes, had some weddings, had some babies, had some travels and kept in touch. On this trip we have chosen to forego a visit to Chez Toal in Manchester England for this rendezvous Part 1 in Munich. Looking forward to catching up, drinking up and laughing it up.

DYK: The oldest building in Munich is a bathroom. Archaeological excavations at Marienhof revealed a latrine from 1260.

  • Destination #7, Munich

    August 16, 2018 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

    Vi Vadi Hotel, downtown Munich

Following some incorrect directions from the airport info staff, and a mis-leading train going a different way, we found our hotel. Perhaps with a little luck of the Irish (we are meeting them here later) our room was one of the few available and we were able to check in early. After settling in, a rest and a snack we await our next reunion.Read more

  • Touchdown #15, Dublin, Ireland

    August 22, 2018 in Ireland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Between destinations, stopovers, side trips and airports, it is getting hard to keep things straight. Here we are arriving in Dublin, Ireland at Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath. Once again we get to meet up with Conor, Andrea and Ellen. After we pick up our rental car we will be off on our Irish road trip. First stop…. a pub?

    What brought us here?
A chance to tour Ireland with authentic Irish folk, can’t turn that offer down. We were so lucky that the Toals are game to do some sightseeing in Ireland while taking us along for the ride (or is it the other way around). Either way we are here to explore the places, the people and the pubs while continuing our rendezvous Part 2 with our favourite Irish-through-Taiwan family.

DYK: There are six steps and 119.5 seconds to a perfectly poured Guinness. At the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin the pros can teach you how to pour your perfect pint!
