Just bimbling along through France and Germany. Fuel is a bit pricey at the moment so we're enjoying slower travel and shorter hops! Leggi altro

    Watten, Nord

    25–26 mar, Francia ⋅ 🌬 9 °C

The start of another trip in our motorhome.
First stop Watten, a favourite first stopover for us, just a 40 minute drive from Calais.
Glad to put our feet up after the drive from home to the Eurotunnel at Folkestone and onwards in France.
A straightforward journey with a stop before the tunnel to pick up Niska's AHC (Animal Health Certificate) from Abbeywell Vets in Folkestone.

  • Saint-Omer, Pas-de-Calais

    26–27 mar, Francia ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

A supermarket trip this morning to stock up with food and a fortuitous meeting with an expat couple living in nearby St Omer who recommended a visit to their home town.
With nowhere else specifically planned we took the short drive to an aire just outside the town at Saint-Martin-les-Tattinghem.Leggi altro

  • Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, Pas-de-Calais

    28–29 mar, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We are visiting an International Memorial at Ablain-Saint-Nazaire.
This site remembers and pays tribute to all those lives sacrificed during the Great War. The Ring of Remembrance, an international memorial has been gathering almost 580,000 names of soldiers who fell in the Nord Pas-de-Calais region between 1914-1918 since 2014.
The names are listed without distinction of nationality, rank, gender or religion
We found 3 significant names on the memorial:
JR Cox (John Richard known as Jack), Sgt of 3rd Worcestershire Regiment died on 18/12/14 aged 32. An ancestor of Tim's. (He is buried in Bailleul and we have visited his grave on previous trips).
Georges Amedée Castille and Georges Eugene Castille may be ancestors of Jacky (née Castille) (investigation underway!).
This site is also home to the necropolis of Notre Dame de Lorette. It is the largest national necropolis in France bringing together the graves of French soldiers killed in the first World War as well as a place of pilgrimage.
We stayed overnight at this site.

  • Arras, Pas-de-Calais

    29–31 mar, Francia ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

We spent a couple of very nice days in the historic town of Arras.
Our aire was alongside the canal with lovely walks and the heart of the historic town was about 10 minutes walk away. Lots of very beautiful buildings especially those outlining Place des Héros a recently pedestrianised market square.
We did the tour of the town without Niska, she's more interested in sniffing around the waterways than immersing herself in history.

  • Rocroi, Ardennes

    1–3 apr, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We have driven into the Ardennes to stay just outside the walls of the 16th century fortified town of Rocroi just a few kilometres from the Belgian border.
Its distinctive feature is its five pointed star shaped plan, a fortified urban design inspired by the modern military concepts of the time.
We loved exploring the town and around the ramparts. We did loads of walking here, Niska loved it , so did we.
We stayed here for 2 days to give us time to explore.
The town also has two excellent boulangeries; of course we tried them both!

  • Montmédy, Meuse

    6–8 apr, Francia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

We spent a couple of days at the citadel in Montmédy. Lots of really interesting walks in the trenches and at the higher levels. As is typical in France there were few restrictions exploring the site, watch out for those steep drops!!
There were also beautiful forest walks into the town.
We parked up by the ramblers hostel and stood alone at night, it was incredibly peaceful.
This was a lovely place; Niska loved it! So did we!

  • Rodemack, Moselle

    7–11 apr, Francia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We spent four days in Rodemack, a place we discovered last year and which has become a favourite of ours.
700 metres of 15th century ramparts surround this medieval town with charming cobbled streets, striking historic buildings and charming houses with beautiful gardens. It deserves its Beau Village status.
We enjoyed beautiful weather during our stay and walked the length and breadth of the town.....several times.
