• Mossman Gorge and Daintree River

    March 12 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Today we picked up our rental car from the airport, and took a long drive northward to the rainforest north of Cairns.

It poured rain before immediately getting sunny again(over and over) for much of our drive, and we were interested to see how wet the region was.

Our first stop was Mossman Gorge, which is a part of the lower rainforest area. We did a rainforest hike here, where we checked out the many local plant species. Chelsea was very impressed by the vines that grew up into the trees, and the roots the trees grew to “buttress” themselves from falling over in the almost constantly wet soil. Chris was impressed by the huge spiders which were the size of Chelsea’s hand!

Following Mossman Gorge, we made our way to the Daintree river where we took a wildlife cruise to see salt water crocodiles. We were very lucky to see a huge adult male, as well as an adult female with ten or so offspring! We also saw a two year old juvenile. These crocs were massive and super impressive!

We ended the night in Port Douglas, where we went out to dinner at “The Mexican” which was gourmet Mexican food, and followed this up with a hike exploring the peninsula.
