• Exploring the Dolomites

    17 giugno, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Today, we finally started our exploration of the Dolomites, visiting the Sass Rigais mountain.

We started our day packing up and heading out from our Airbnb, and grabbed cappuccinos on our way out of town.

We had a long mountain drive, and were rewarded the entire time with absolutely incredible panoramic views of the Dolomites. Eventually, we made it to the town of Ortisei, where we were able to catch a cable car to the top of the Sass Rigais mountain, which is the highest peak of the Geisler Group.

The views at the top of this mountain were almost indescribable. Both of us felt we were looking at almost fairytale scenery, and Chris felt like he was transported straight into game of thrones or lord of the rings. We quickly grabbed a bite before hiking, and sampled German dumplings. One interesting thing about the Dolomites is that while we are technically in Italy, the food and architecture is heavily Bavarian influenced. It feels very similar to our time in Austria on that end!

After eating, we hiked around the summit, being rewarded at every angle by even more amazing views. The mountain was blanketed in wildflowers, so there was a carpet of color interspersed throughout the very green grass blanketing the mountain. We were enamored with everything, and are SO excited for the rest of our exploration of the Dolomites.

After drinking in the sights as long as we could, we took the cable car back down into town, and did some quick shopping at the local grocery before heading to our bed and breakfast in the town of Selva.

Selva was an absolutely picturesque town, with mountains rising up above it on all sides, and quaint Bavarian architecture throughout the entire town. We settled in and then grabbed dinner at a local spot, before calling it an early night with a very large hike tomorrow.
