    On the road

    September 10, 2021 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Right after work I hopped into my friends car and we got on the road. We crossed the Elbe river on the iconic Blue Wonder (Blaues Wunder). Because of severe accidents on the highway, we took a route through smaller roads and towns for the first hour before we got on the highway to Wrocław.Read more

  • Arriving in Wrocław

    September 10, 2021 in Poland ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We caught a huge traffic jam a few kilometres before the city, so we arrived at our hotel slightly later than anticipated and we proceeded right to our first glass of beer in the lobby while waiting for everyone to gather for our first night out.Read more

  • First night out

    September 10, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Still waiting for some of our party to arrive, we went for food at a nice restaurant called Chleb I Vino (Bread and Wine) that was inspired by French food.
After another 2 hours, our remaining friends arrived and we went to find a place that still would serve food as well as drinks at this late hour and ended up at a Mexican called Panczo.Read more

  • The historic centre (II)

    September 11, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After the climb of the clock tower we continued to walk through the centre of Wrocław, enjoying a mix of older and newer architecture as well as fine and street art along the way, ending at the town hall on the market square again.Read more

  • Wrocław dwarves

    September 11, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The first of these cute little figurines was erected in 2001 to commemorate a protest movement of the communist era. Nowadays there are more than 250 of these dwarves or gnomes scattered around the city and they add a little extra to it, even inviting to "dwarf hunt" via GPS app.Read more

  • The Match

    September 11, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

The match was on and obviously the local Slask Wrocław were hugely supported by the crowd, something that I hadn't been able to enjoy in a long while, due to all the restrictions.
The game itself was dragging a little after the initial offensive periods and the favourite, Legia (white), was starting to control the game. Very late in the second half, there were a couple of chances for Wrocław (green), and suddenly the ball was in the back of the net. The linesman had lifted the offside flag for the briefest of moments but taken it down again when realising his error. The resulting confusion was used by a quick-witted Wrocław player who went through and converted the goal. All the following commotion by the Legia Warsaw players was useless, except maybe for the effect of internalising again the old truth: you play on until the whistle.
Slask Wrocław just barely managed to hold on to the lead until the end of the match.

  • Victory round on the tram

    September 11, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The tram ride home was pleasant and loud with the local fans bringing the tram to shake. We didn't understand a lot of the chanting, but there was really no need for that. The frequent mentioning of the words "Slask Wrocław" or "Legia" left little to no doubt to what it was all about.Read more

  • The After-mat(c)h

    September 11, 2021 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Of course we needed to finish our trip with a nice night out. We didn't have much choice in terms of food. We returned late to the city because of the football match and most restaurant's kitchen were already closed. We were lucky enough to find a Czech restaurant and beer brewery that served food until midnight. After a couple of beers we finished with a bottle of Polish bisongrass vodka.
Once the restaurant closed, most retired to the hotel, but some of us went on to have a couple of cocktails in the vicinity of the hotel...
