Bei strahlendem Sonnenschein wurden wir abgeholt. Der Weg nach Baltimore (Highway) war unspektakulär. Hier in dieser Gegend haben sie einen strengen Winter, seit 10 Jahren nie mehr so kalt gewesen (-10°C).
Das Womo wurde in 2h erfolgreich aus dem Hafen von Baltimore geholt. So was von Glück: es wurde nicht eingebrochen.

Fahrt nach Washington

Am letzten Tag unserer New York Reise sollte sich die Sonne auch noch nicht blicken lassen. Im Gegenteil, es sollte der kälteste und nasseste Tag werden. Wie gut, dass wir den größten Teil im Auto verbracht haben, denn heute ging es nach Washington.

Nachdem wir wieder in unserem Stammcafé gefrühstückt hatten, haben wir unser Auto am äußersten Rand von Queens abgeholt. Eigentlich wollten wir uns noch eine Lobster Roll für den Weg mitnehmen, aber nach längerer Fahrt wieder in die Stadt rein, standen wir vor verschlossener Tür. Naja, wir sollte wohl wirklich NY hinter uns lassen.

Dann ging es 4 Stunden Richtung Süden und nach einem Raststopp bei Burger King, einem Uncle Cracker Song und 20$ Maut später hatten wir endlich den Maryland University Campus 30 km außerhalb von Washington erreicht. Den Abend haben wir in Studentenpup Looneys verbracht. Man hat uns unser Alter auch nicht angesehen, da wir fleißig mit allen Studierenden aus dem Smirnoff Eimer getrunken haben.

BIRTHDAY BOY

Today is Randy's birthday! For his special day we are going to Mt. Vernon. It's about 40 minute drive so we will leave early to make it for a 10 am apptm for a Hamilton tour (Lawson's choice), then at 11 am for a garden tour (Linda's pick), then lunch at the cafe and a tour of the home at 1 (Randy's favorite). Another day with lots of walking...we are pretty tired with achy feet by the end of each day, but talking about all the great things we saw.Read more

LAST DAY IN DC

Last day of aching feet, last day of germy metro, last day of figuring out how to get to our new sight for the day. We have had a great time, seen some incredible sights for 8 days, haven't even seen them all, but we are ready to leave this fabulous city! Today is Library of Congress and Archives. The Library of Congress is the most beautiful building inside..all marble, mosaics and sculptures. You could go inside the Reading Room if you get a pass to do research, or you can view it from above. We saw the original Declaration of Independence and Constitution at the Archives. The 2 buildings were too far to walk so we took a cab. We drove all the way to DC instead of taking the metro. It was a little shorter, but more stressful and expensive.Read more

Back to DC, back on the metro, back to the mall to go around to all the monuments. We're going to try and have a fun and easier on the feet day. Ill let you know how it goes! It was still a lot of walking but at least we took the morning off to relax, have lunch at ihop and not start till 3. There's a circulator bus that makes a loop around the mall you can hop on and off but we had to wait way more than 10 min they advertize to get back on. I was so dead when we got back I went straight to bed.Read more

LET'S DO DC

Let's start the DC tour with the Smithsonians: American History and Natural History. There are 19 Smithsonian museums...we may not see them all. Infact, now that we are in it, I think we will only see the American History Museum. The part about all the wars is Lawson's favorite! Quite an amazing museum! We'll save the Natural History museum till tomorrow. We learned how to navigate the Metro. We found a Farmer's Market for lunch. All in all a great day!Read more

CHANGE THE GUARDS

Today we go to Arlington Cemetery to watch the changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Their precision and ceremony every 30 minutes are quite impressive! It is sobering to see all the tombstones and to see how large the cemetery really is. So glad we had a tram tour to drive us around and explain everything. It was an easy walking day but we are still so tired. ...I think it's all catching up with us. Two more days of sightseeing.Read more

We wake up to a foggy Saturday morning, but the sun breaks through and the temperatures rise. A beautiful spring day!

Thalia and Alex pick us up around 10:30. They have a birthday gift for me. . .2 books that I'm really looking forward to reading, and a lovely card. So thoughtful of them. They also have some books for Naomi! 😊

We visit 2 estate sales in the Potomac area. It's a beautiful area. Tony and I find deals on golf balls and golf umbrellas. Thalia buys a hand mixer and Alex buys a crystal decanter, a cutting board and a Weber Gas BBQ! $75.00! The deal of the day! It seems to work well. With a little clean up, it will be almost as good as new!

We head out to Falls Road Golf Course and have lunch. We play 9 holes of golf. The tees and fairways are in good shape, but the greens are a little patchy. In spite of that, I play my best game in a long time! Alex is impressed! Tony and Alex play well, as usual! And Thalia is an excellent cart driver!

We have a drink after, then drive to Friendship Heights for dinner. We take the "scenic route" and have a nice tour of this Washington suburb! The spring flowers and shrubs are all in bloom, the grass is green, and the leaves are out on the trees. So pretty.

We meet Thalia's parents, Ann and Steve, for the first time. We are planning to have dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. It is too busy, a 40 minute wait, so Steve finds us a table in an Italian restaurant just next door. It is a large restaurant, but much quieter. Steve proposes a beautiful toast toThalia and Alex for their upcoming marriage in June. We are all very happy for them.

The food is delicious and the conversation is interesting. We enjoy getting to know the Aokis, and making plans with them for June.

After dinner, we switch cars. Thalia and Alex and Tony and I take the van, so Alex can pick up his new BBQ, and Ann and Steve take Thalia's car home. Thalia will stop by to see them tomorrow and exchange cars before going back to Richmond.

Thalia and Alex drive us back to Cherry Hill, and then go to pick up the BBQ. By now it's 10:00, so they are working in the dark. They message us later that they almost took the wrong BBQ. The houses are similar and they went to the wrong back yard! But they figure it out in time, load the BBQ somehow by themselves, and take it home!

Tony and I pack up for our trip home tomorrow. It's midnight. It's been a wonderful day!

We had a great time at Cherry Hill RV Park. Beautiful place set up for DC visitors. Now back to the nomad life and driving all day...but we are ready for our next adventure!
