Nous commençons réellement la visite du nord et de jolies montagnes (quand il n'y a pas de brume 😶‍🌫️) par Bac Ha, petite ville de 7 000 habitants. Nous y ferons quelques marches aux alentours.

Woke up supersuper early to get to the Bac Ha market early in the morning and see the Hmong people selling their supplies from up the mountains. Enjoyed all the varieties of weird fruits, veggies, homemade pharmacies, beautiful fabrics, tried some new food (as always without knowing what it was) and had a cards night back in our private homestay.

Trajet vers Bac Ha

4 heures d'autoroute jusqu'à Lao Cai (prononcé "baoque aie") pour déjeuner.
Nous reprenons la route 1h30 jusqu'au village de Bac Ha (prononcé Baka) où nous sommes hébergés par Mme Loan de l'ethnie Tay.

Très bon accueil ! Après une ballade et ces premiers paysages Vietnamien , nous dînons avec la famille ! Beaucoup d'alcool de riz et de liqueur de prune !
Comme on ne boit pas seul, j'accompagne avec plaisir !

Avant la cuite, nous allons nous coucher sous les combles. Il fait froid et 2 couvertures suffisent à peine ! Si seulement le froid était le seul problème !! Un mariage de l'autre côté de la vallée et sa sonorité à fond jusqu'au petit matin, nous a fait profiter de la musique traditionnelle vietnamienne.Read more

The markets are interesting with so many people, some very weird looking meat and vegetables which they purchase and eat at the stall from which they have bought.

We decided if it looked and smelt weird no way were we buying anything.Read more

Ban Pho Village

Back in the car for a short drive to Ban Pho village.

Ban Pho Village is an upland commune of Bac Ha district, Lao Cai. It Is one of the most well-known villages in Sapa, Ban Pho Village where has more than 500 households with over 3,000 inhabitants, which 99% are from Mongolia.

We went into one of the local's houses to see how they live, I know we could not live like this, no windows, kitchen open fireplace smoke inside , timber and mud huts and a dirt floor. I will live in Camperdown Castle any day.Read more

John had another experience of trying to bargain with a group of ladies " you buy from me only 200VDN". We decided all we wanted to pay was 100VDN and this bargaining went on for about 20 mins while we were having a cold drink waiting for our guide The difference in the final cost negotiation from 150 VDN to 100 DVN cost is a whole $3.50 but we all know John and it was not something we really needed to buy. But guess what we walked away and she kept following and John eventually won. See what happens when you are an accountant.Read more

Dad just loves playing with them, often he bargains like that just see how low they will go, most times we don't need it so we make up some silly amount and if we get it it's a bonus and a very cheap souvenier

Bac Ha Markets

Today is another long day of sightseeing and finishing with the night train back to Hanoi.

First stop after 3 hour drive are the Bac Ha Markets.

Bac Ha Markets are in the northern hills of Vietnam and are one of the best ethnic markets in all of Southeast Asia! so they say. On Sundays, the ethnic minorities from the surrounding villages and hills come by foot, by motor bike, horse, by water buffalo for their chance to socialize, eat, drink, smoke, get a haircut, and buy produce and meat for the next week. We saw lots the Flower H'mong villagers today.

The markets had heaps of weird and wonderful things and the colours of the clothing is so bright.

The markets are set up in animal, clothes, handicrafts and food stalls.Read more

Kazdou nedeli brzo rano opusti zeny a muzi ze 4 mistnich kmenu sve vesnice v horach a udolich posetych ryzovymi policky, aby na trhu v mestecku Bac Ha prodali, co za uplynuly tyden vyrobili. Kabelky, penezenky, naramky, zalozky do knih, zviratka z tradicnich latek, misky z kokosovych orechu... a taky vodni bycky, slepice, kachny a psiky. Cedule, co tu maji, rika, ze je mistni zvireci trh zapsany do Guinessovy knihy rekordu. Uplne nevim, jaky rekord teda lame, ale bycka bych si koupila ;-).
Krome veci na prodej se to tu hemzi barevnymi kostymy, babickami, maminkami s detmi, detmi s detmi... a taky zapadnimi turisty, kteri sem jezdi poridit suvenyry a par hezkych snimku.
Po vydatne pho jsme suvenyry porizovali taky. V tvrde konkurenci prodejechtivych babicek slo smlouvani jako po masle. Az mi to obcas bylo blbe a k dojednane cene jsem prihodila dvacku. Suvenyry mam, rodino, pratele, teste se ;-).Read more

Can Cau Market and Tribal Villages

I was feeling much better after my herbal bath and slept very well. God knows what was in it but it seemed to work. So we borrowed the bike and went to Can Cau Market, famous for being the largest buffalo market in the area. When we left on the bike Phat looked at us with his huge puppy dog eyes for leaving him. But we hadn't done anything for 3 days so we headed off to the market. Well the ground was absolutely sodden from the rain and the sheer number of buffalo's that had trampled their way through. It was a lovely drive but as always in the mountains the weather is very unpredictable, luckily we were on our way back and were able to take cover in a cafe when the heavens opened. After waiting 45 mins it turned to drizzle and felt it was as good as we would get so we grabbed Phat's treat cake and headed back to the homestay. The afternoon was spent playing games with Phat and then having the honour of visiting various local tribal villages. Will even tried their local tobacco! The weather was stunning and the views were lovely on the bike along the way!

That evening I cooked Aubergine Saak and Chapattis for the family. It was so much fun both Lan, the mum, and Phat joined in rolling the chapattis and they loved it! It was sooo nice to have home cooked food too! Then the family invited us to go to Bac Ha night market. Wow do they put a show on for tourists! First they have performances of their local dance on stage and then they build a huge fire and everyone dances round holding hands. It was so so so much fun!!Read more

Bac Ha Market and off we go again!

The next day we went to the really famous Bac Ha Market which is the largest market bringing together tribes from villages all around wearing their traditional dresses and making the market so colourful! We went with Lan and Phat and it was so interesting! We learnt that a buffalo costs about £1000 and a songbird about £100!

We then very quickly decided it was definitely time to move on so we booked a super last minute bus to take us to Ha Giang, well two buses.

The second bus had yet another crazy driver and it was sooo full of furniture and even a car windscreen in a wooden frame. We literally had to climb over it all to get to our seats! It's hilarious when you are on a bus as a tourists being thrown completely out of our seats and barely comfortable when the conductor of the bus stands the whole way barely moving with the manic bus. A girl on the bus described it as "its like the bus off Harry Potter" and honestly I couldn't have summed it up better!! The weather was glorious the whole journey and the views along the way spectacular! On the bus we met Svenja who decided to stay in the same Homestay as us.
