    This is arguably the best gelato we've had in Rome.

    The Trevi Fountain

    Designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci, this iconic Baroque fountain served as a display of an ancient roman acqueduct termination.

    They say if you throw a coin over your shoulder and into the fountain, you guarantee your return to Rome. So... can you guess what we did? 💸💸

    Fun facts from back in the day:

    - The colosseo can hold up to 50,000 people
    - It was designed to fill in 15 mins, and evacuate in 5 mins
    - The construction was completed in 10 years
    - Plebians were shaded from the hot sun, while nobility had to bake
    - Romans were incredibly innovative... and brutal. It's estimated that over 400,000 people and 1,000,000 animals died in the colosseum! It is considered one of the most haunted places on earth 👻

    Downtown Ancient Rome - Ruins of the fallen empire

    Tickets purchased for the Colosseo also gave access to Foro Romano and Palatine Hill. The excavations to clear the Roman Forum took over 100 years - and was not completed until the 20th century.

    Here you'll find the ruins of several important ancient government buildings including the Regia (8th century BC), the Temple of Vesta (7th century BC), the complex of the Vestal Virgins, and the Roman kingdom's earliest shrines and temples.

    This 13th century minor Basilica is a Roman Catholic church, and the only church on Campidoglio (aka Capitoline Hill, and formerly known as Mons Saturnius - dedicated to the god Saturn). It remains as the designated church of the city council, and is a titular church currently assigned to Cardinal Priest Salvatore De Giorgi.

    Pantheon

    A former Roman temple that has been converted to a church. It is the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome. It's name means "honor all Gods" in Greek, and was first built almost 2000 years ago as a temple to do just that.

    Fun Fact: The dome was the largest in the world for 1300 years, and until today it remains the largest unsupported dome in the world at 142 ft diameter! As a reference point, the US capital is 96 ft in diameter. A huge architectural achievement!

    45€ for a huge meat and cheese plate, caprese salad, and a bottle of red. Because when in Rome, right?

    The Vatican for the Papal Address

    #62 - Bring my child to the Pope's address so his/her forehead can get kissed by the Pope

    The line was massive to get into the square. For future reference, highly recommend getting to the Vatican early (7 am) to get through security and get seats in front of St. Peter's Basilica. We got to the Vatican around 8 am, and it was already packed.

    The Pope's address starts around 10 am, and he rides in on a cart that weaves between aisles beforehand for crowd interaction. A great opportunity to get a high five!    Leia mais

    We decided to leave the Pope's public address a little early to beat the crowds to the Vatican Museum - and it worked!

    My absolute favorite piece in the Vatican museum was Raphael's "The School of Athens" (1509-1511) where famous minds and artists are depicted in one scene. Some that have been identified with certainty include Plato and Aristotle (in the painting's center), Socrates, Pythagoras, Euclid, Ptolemy, Zoroaster, Raphael (self portrait), Sodoma and Diogenes. This painting was not intended to represent a school that actually existed, but rather an ideal community of intellects from the entire classical world.

    Capella Sistina

    There are no words. Absolutely stunning.

    On the ceiling and walls of the chapel are the beautiful works of Michealangelo that took 4 years to complete (1508-1512). This is arguably one of mankind's greatest artistic achievements, depicting various scenes from the Christian bible.

    Today, the Sistine chapel is the site of the Papal conclave (where the new Pope is selected).

    Fun fact: Michealangelo allegedly preferred sculpting over painting, and had to be coerced by Pope Julius II with a lucrative commission of sculpting 40 massive figures for the Pope's tomb in return for taking on the Sistine chapel.

    This place was an awesome escape from the crowds. We had to descend stairs off a main road to enter the venue. It was secluded, rich with culture, and very welcoming.

    Today's agenda includes a Day trip to Naples for pizza and Capri for some coastal shots. 📸

    To make the most of it, we were up and out the door by 5:30 this morning to catch a 6:30 am train. We stopped at a local grocery store last night to pick up the fixings of our own meat and cheese plate to enjoy on the road. 🧀 (A learning from our last 2+hr train ride where food for purchase was not as easy to come by)Leia mais

    589 Meters above Seal Level, Monte Solaro provides outstanding 360 degree views of Capri Island. To get here, we took a bus from Marina Grande to Anacapri (1.80 euro pp), and a chair lift up to the summit (11 euro pp). So much fun, and so worth it!Leia mais
