We started here in Pigneto again. Today we were going to visit the Appian Way, the ancient road the Romans constructed and used to travel from Rome to South Italy (current day).

The Church of Domine Quo Vadis, according to tradition, was built in the place where Jesus appeared to the apostle Peter who was leaving Rome for escape martyrdom. To Peter's question "Domine, quo vadis?" ("Lord, where are you going?") Jesus would have replied "Venio Romam iterum crucifigi" ("I am coming to Rome to be crucified again"). At which the repentant apostle would return to Rome by being crucified.Read more

The Catacombs of San Sebatiano. We didn’t go inside as it costs 10 Euro and no photo shooting inside. Instead, we went to a church which was just next to the Catacombs about San Sebastiano.

This was the by far most impressive site on the Appian Way. It was very informative and you could picture how the palace, the circus and the mausoleum looked like. It also shows the spots and explains their history. Very informative site and it’s free of charge.Read more

We had an early start today because the Vatican Museum is free last Sunday of the month. We lined up for one hour to go in. Beware of people jumping the line though. We had a few not-so-nice experience, but lucky that the local Italians stepped out to tell the line jumper off. We intentionally missed the mass held in the square, so that there would be fewer people. The queue for the St. Peter’s Basilica was long, so we gave it up and chose to a quieter Basilica.

Basilica of Saint Paul Outside The Walls! The highlight of the day. This was definitely the 2nd most impressive Basilica that we have visited in Rome. It was another Holy See 🇻🇦 place but with a lot less tourists. Instead of lining up at the Basilica outside St. peter’s square, this was a good choice to spend a few hours touring around.Read more

Herculaneum (Ercolano) was an ancient Roman town. It was buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Although less known than Pompeii today, it was the first and, for a long time, the only discovered Vesuvian city (in 1709).

The skeletal remains of at least 300 people were found and were still on site until now. Herculaneum was more well-preserved than Pompeii. It was also less crowded and we could see more in-depth of the ancient buildings and such. We enjoyed our day trip spent in Herculaneum very much and would definitely recommend this to anyone who visit Naples.Read more

We took advantage of the Free first Sunday of the month of most of the scenic spots in Italy to visit Pompeii. It was a well-known and a must-visit spot for most tourists visiting Naples. We enjoyed walking around the area but having visited Herculaneum yesterday, we love the personal touch and amount of foot traffic there more.Read more
