      ...nu simmer in Espana

      Obwohl es heute Nacht mucksmäuschen still war, haben wir nicht wirklich gut geschlafen, wir vermuten, dass der Vollmond uns geärgert hat 🌚...aber egal, ein kräftigendes Frühstück und ab ging die wilde Fahrt...auf nach Spanien.

      Auf "altbekannter Strecke" fuhren wir auf Nebensträßchen durch die Berge, über die spanische Grenze. Dort trifft sich alles, was nicht über die Pyrenäen oder an der Atlantikküste rüber will...ein buntes Tohuwabohu aller Nationalitäten.

      Wir mussten erst mal tanken, denn hier ist der Diesel 20-30 Cent günstiger 😊

      Ulli hatte mal wieder einen tollen Platz ausgesucht (Danke an Fluchtbus)...7 km auf holprigen Schotterpisten und wir standen Mutterseelenallein oberhalb der Klippen, mit Blick auf das gegenüberliegende Roses und die kleine Bucht von Montgo...sehr idyllisch und einsam, genau das, was wir suchen...

      Ein leckeres Essen, ein Bierchen und warten auf die stockdunkle Nacht...naja, nicht ganz, der Vollmond scheint noch immer...hoffentlich lässt er uns heute Abend in Ruhe 😉      Read more

      Day 28

      Chilling

      We decided to stay here for another day and although we had a couple of tentative plans for how to spend it we have basically not done very much. Sitting in the campsite this morning reading our books and sitting on the beach this afternoon reading our books.

      The most exciting it got was realising we had accidentally bought chicken soup instead of chicken stock and having to make a risotto with it. It turned out ok anyway.

      Moving on tomorrow... we are approaching the half way point of our trip and I have booked a surprise hotel/spa break for a couple of nights in the Pyrenees.      Read more

      Day 27

      Illa Mateua Càmping to Punta Ventosa

      May 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Another day, another walk… this time to Punta Venta, one of the nearer high points on the cliffs around Montgó. One of us had a quick dip on the way. Amazing views of the Gulf of Roses. The path was pretty close to the cliff edge at points.

      We walked back thru the woods, listening to the sing-song of the Sardinian Warbler (at least, that’s what the Merlín app told us) - didn’t see one. The paths around here are very rocky and uneven which means you can’t take your eyes off the ground without stopping.

      Lovely weather this afternoon. We may even have had a little nap!

      Day 26

      Begur and L'Escala/Montgó

      May 24 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      I (Andy) was awake early, like before 7, which used to happen regularly at home but hasn't happened nearly as much on this trip. Fresh air and exercise does wonders. Anyway, I left Sara in bed and walked to the viewpoint overlooking L'Estartit. Lovely.

      Then breakfast - porridge, seeds, peanut butter and fruit - as always!

      Then we decided to visit Begur where we had a lovely couple of hours visiting the castle, the church, a few (up-market) shops, and a museum followed by a proper tapas lunch that was delicious.

      After lunch we drove to Illa Mateua Càmping Resort at L'Escala (though we think it is closer to Montgó, which is a lovely little bay). It's about 30 minutes up the coast from where we were.

      We have booked in for two nights.

      We stopped off at a camping shop on the way. See if you can spot our new purchase in the photos. Let's just say it takes us up in the world!

      Ham, eggs and patatas bravas for tea, which is the closest we can easily get to ham, eggs and chips on our little camping stove!

      Weather not great today but looks better tomorrow. We decided to walk around the headland to keep warm before tea and it turned out to be further, and higher, than we expected but had some great views.      Read more

      Escala

      May 5 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

      Short trip to Escala, campcite in the village, close to beach and everything. More to come.

      Strolled on the seafront and into town. Lovely small town, bit quiet on a Sunday, and it's not yet the season. But I like these kind of places very much, especially out of season.

      Juhuuuu, wir sind in Spanien angekommen. Der Stellplatz ist direkt an den Klippen. Wahnsinn! Der Ausblick ist famos.
      Die Leute, welche hier sind, sind total lustig. Dreads und Tattoos... Spanier, Schweden und Franzosen.
      Mal schauen,wie sich hier der Wind entwickelt. Letzte Nacht haben wir nur wenig mitbekommen. Ein paar Schüttler lediglich. Gut platziert 🥳      Read more

      Day 27

      Practical stuff

      May 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      For most of this trip we have been sleeping inside the van on the rock and roll bed. While we are at this site we are experimenting with sleeping in the pop top.

      It feels more like camping, which is nice. Also, it avoids the faff of having to make the bed every night, we can just leave our bedding where it is and push everything up into the pop top during the day. Much more convenient.

      The only downside is our nightly wee, which I definitely need every night these days (it's an age thing!). We have to climb down into the van and use the porta-potty, then climb back. Oh well, can't have everything I suppose!

      Getting the bedding (which now includes two thin air mattresses from Decathlon as well as our 5cm thick Duvalay mattress topper) into the pop top in the first place is a bit of a hassle which is why we don't bother doing it if we are only staying somewhere for one night.

      We have also put up our air gazebo at this site - again, too much hassle for a one-night stop. This gives us somewhere warm to sit in the evening. I find sitting in the van a bit uncomfortable. No idea why, the seats in the van are very comfortable for driving. Annoyingly, we spent £70 on an electric pump for the gazebo and we can't make it work properly at the moment so having to inflate it by hand.

      Finally, we are not using many of the other facilities in the van much. We are not bothering to fill the water tank - it's so easy just to get water from the campsite taps as we need it - so not using the sink and no grey water to empty when we leave. And we are cooking outside on our Campingaz cooker, so not using the cooking facilities in the van either - think we have only used them once all trip. The grill is a complete waste of space and I think we will get it taken out and just use the space as extra storage when we get back. The fridge and associated storage shelves are brilliant though.

      We haven't wild-camped or used "aires" yet (free or cheap places to stop but with few facilities and not a lot of space). The aires in France have always looked too cramped for us - basically just carparks. The ones in Spain have had more space but we are now in the habit of searching for campsites not aires and planning ahead for an aire feels a bit high risk.      Read more

      Costa Brava

      Heute wollen wir noch ein bisschen der Küste entlang spazieren, schließlich gibt es hier tolle Wege, die früher von Schmugglern genutzt wurden. Wir starten am Vormittag beim Hafen und folgen dem Weg ein Stück. Zeitig kehren wir um, denn Hauns hat heute nochmal eine Kitesession. Die Kinder und ich verbringen den Nachmittag im Garten, wo Oliver dem Pool nicht widerstehen kann, obwohl er echt noch saukalt ist. Am Abend wollen wir uns die andere Seite der Küste vornehmen. Leider werden wir plötzlich vom Regen überrascht. Wir kehren also um und bestellen Pizza 🍕Read more

      Day 12–14

      Tag 12 - 14: L'Escala, ES

      ... Sehr viel mehr als vom vorherigen Tag haben wir zu Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer leider nicht zu sagen. Außer vielleicht, dass wir die vielen weißen Pferde, die unglaublich vielen wilden Flamingos und die schöne Sumpflandschaft tatsächlich gesehen haben.
      Nachdem wir Freitagmorgen in einer spontan aufgetauchten Seenlandschaft mit Starkregen wach geworden sind, haben wir uns dazu entschlossen, direkt nach Spanien zu flüchten... Ganz zur Freude von Rico. Aufgrund eines längeren online Meetings und zum Trocknen unserer Sachen, haben wir uns fürs anstehende Wochenende über Airbnb in L'Escala in der Miniatur-Ferienwohnung von Sergei eingebucht. Die Wohnung war zwar winzig und sehr einfach, aber auch unfassbar niedlich. Der Balkon war fast größer als die ganze Wohnung. Auf diesem haben wir den Abend dann mit einem Glas Wein ausklingen lassen. Am glücklichsten war wohl Hicks über die neu gewonnen vier festen Wände... Auf seinem Weg zum Campinghund hat die verwöhnte Fellnase wohl noch einiges zu lernen. Hihi.
      Der nächste Tag begann dann mit dem besagten Online-Meeting. Rico und Hicks haben derweil die Zweisamkeit unter Männern genossen. Anschließend ging es für uns drei Pfadfinder los, den Ort unsicher machen. Neben einer schönen Kirche und süßen Straßen, gab es in L'Escala ein paar schöne Plätze an der Strandpromenade. Zu empfehlen ist die Strandbar am Eck bei 'La Platja'. Die haben lecker Mojito und super frische Tintenfischringe. Die Guacamole mit Nachos ist auch seehr empfehlenswert.
      Insgesamt ist der Ort ganz nett für die Durchreise. Es gibt auch ein paar Museen. Zur aktuellen Jahreszeit ist hier allerdings absolut tote Hose. Und bezüglich Hunden geht's wohl in Ordnung... An den öffentlichen Stränden sind Hunde verboten. Es gibt jedoch ein schönes Wäldchen und Felder, an denen Hund sich frei bewegen darf.
      Eigentlich wollten wir am Sonntag weiter fahren. Da das Wetter allerdings wieder eklig nass war und unser Host, Sergei, mit einem unschlagbaren Angebot für eine weitere Nacht im die Ecke kam, haben wir uns Sonntagmorgen spontan dazu entschlossen, Sergeis Angebot anzunehmen.
      So begann der Sonntag für uns ganz klassisch: Mit ner Tasse Kaffee und Kuschelsocken im Bett. Ansonsten gab's nicht viel mehr... Ein bisschen Bürokratie, ein schneller Step zum Supermarkt und eine kleine Hunderunde.      Read more

      Hallo Frühling 🌸💐

      Wir fuhren weiter zum neuen Stellplatz, der auf einem Hügel mitten in einem Pinienwald war, mit Blick auf das Meer. 😍🌊 Überall wuchsen Massen an Rosmarin. 🌿

      Wir gingen dort eine Runde spazieren, überall blühten die Blumen, der Rosmarin und Thymian und die Vögel zwitscherten uns ein Konzert. 🌸🐦🎶 Richtig schön, wie hier der Frühling schon angekommen ist. 🥰

      Wir fanden auch 3 alte Geschützfundamente von der Kriegszeit, manche Bunker wurden zugemauert, aber mittlerweile ist bei den meisten ein kleiner Durchgang aufgestemmt worden. Zurück gingen wir durch den Wald, wo wir einige Wildschweinspuren entdeckten. 🐗👀
