Railway Trip in Skagway
30. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C
I'm feeling a little off this morning. I think I have a chill from yesterday. It is a good thing that my excursion doesn't start until 11:30 this morning. I have a late breakfast and then get my start for the train.
The trip today is on a rail system that was built in 1900. This was built through the winter, and many men died in the building due to the harsh conditions. The train was built for the gold rush and connected Skagway with Whitehorse.
The train accents almost 3000 feet, through mountains and valleys. We can see Skagway through a valley and clear down to the harbour where our ship is. We actually briefly cross the border into Canada. You can see the outpost of the North Western Mounted Police.
The scenery is outstanding but devoid of wildlife. Apparently, fish don't like the silly, winding river, and therefore, there are no eagles or other predators.
Tonight, I'm dining the Alazar restaurant. I put a photo of the restaurant in a couple of days ago. It is a smaller restaurant with the same menu as the Grand Pacific. Tonight's dinner started with a 3 cheese ravioli, baked halibut for the main, and a fig and apple cobbler for dessert. I have no idea who is cooking for me like this at home.Læs mere
Birthday Celebration in Juneau
29. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 5 °C
Today is my birthday, I'm 64 today. It is overcast and drizzling again today. Seems to be the norm for this trip. However, I have a tour to go see the Mendenhall Glacier and a whale watching trip. One of the ladies from the solo traveler's group is going to head out with me. Teresa, who lives in Peterborough, meets me for breakfast, and then we head off.
Juneau is a booming metropolis with 31,500 people in residents. Alaska itself only has 741,000 people living there. Juneau is so big that it actually has a Costco! It is also only 8 miles from Canada.
Our tour leaves at 11AM. We have some time, so we walk the main drag. There are plenty of shops here and I think the ratio is 2 jewelry stores to one souvenirs store. I do get a couple of Christmas decorations and a hoodie.
We pick up the bus and head to Mendenhall Glacier. There are several trails, and we pick the lookout point. Here we see the glacier and a nice waterfall. I also spot a juvenile bald eagle in a tree. They don't get their white feathers until they are around years old. We have about an hour to explore before the bus picks us up to go to the harbour.
Once on board, we head out to find some whales! The weather isn't the greatest, but that is out of our control. Out on the water, the wind and rain make it much cooler. Even with double layers, hat, scarf, etc., it is still cold. We do start to see water spouts from the whales blow. We head over and see some of them crest the water. These are grey whales. Some of the mom's even have their babies. We do see on tail fin, but it is slim pickings today.
Teresa invites me to one of the specialty restaurants o board for a birthday dinner. Teresa has dinner passes to use up. We went to the French restaurant called La Bistro. I have the French onion soup and the lamb chops. (I got food pics this time) we have a nice bottle of wine, and she managed to get a birthday cake in there as well. It was so nice of her to through all this trouble for someone she had just met.
It has been a full day, so it's time for bed. I have excursions for the next two days as well, so stay tuned.Læs mere
Lazy Day in Icy Strait Point
28. maj 2025, Forenede Stater
I slept well again. Seems to be a norm when I'm on a ship. Maybe I should just stay?
I wake to a drizzling hazy day. I head out for my walk on deck. Deck 7 is covered, and it goes all the way around the ship. A nice 3 laps, and I'm ready for breakfast.
Now Icy Strait Point is in the Hoonah area in Alaska. It is home to the largest Tlingit tribe of First Nations people. It is famous for whale watching. We have tendered out since there are 3 ships in today. I am not going on shore with 10,000 other people in a town that literally closes at 5:00 PM.
So, I stay on board and relax. I have a nice breakfast and then go reading. After lunch in an uncrowded buffet, it is nap time.
The starkness of the area and the weather give it a beauty all of its own.Læs mere

RejsendeDan and Vic took the zipline with the whole “fam damily” in Hoonah! (6 or 7 of us! Not me!) they were Bussed up to the mountain top and had a really long run! It was a new port when we were there- very primitive, but an interesting new income for that tiny community! It wasn’t a port for several ships at once! 😮Good call.
Iceburgs Ahead!
27. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C
This morning, after a wonderful night's sleep, I head to deck 7 for a walk outside. It is about 8C (46F) outside. The waves are rolling, and the day is overcast. There is also a brisk wind. Perfect morning for a walk! 3 laps of the ship equal 1 mile roughly. So off I go. I try to get 3000 steps before breakfast. That way, I can justify desert.
I head down to the restaurant for breakfast. Some oatmeal, fresh fruit, cranberry juice (no vodka yet), and coffee. I will get food pictures tonight.
Back to the room for a shower, and then I'll see what happens.
There are plenty of activities today on board. However, the big attraction today is the Hubbard Glacier. As we approach, you can see ice chunks in the water.
The Hubbard Glacier is south of Anchorage. It is the longest tidal glacier in North America at 122 km (75 miles) long and 200 m (655 ft) tall.
The sun has decided to come out just in time for some good shots. It is amazing to see but not the best all and end all. Back down to the bar for a chocolate martini.
After another amazing dinner, I take in a show called Blazing Boots. It is a pop country tribute. The show was meh. Time for bed.Læs mere
Cruise day!
26. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌧 5 °C
I have checked out bright and early at 9 AM. The rental car is returned. I have checked in with Norwegian for the bus to Whittier. I am aboard, and all is good. It is an hour and a half trip to the cruise port. Let's enjoy.
The drive to Whittier is very scenic. We stop at a rest area to check out the mountains and the glacial waters. It has turned overcast with intermittent drizzle. It is what it is.
To get to Whittier, we have to go through a tunnel. This tunnel was built during WW2. It was built so the army could get supplies to Whittier in case of attack by Russia. The tunnel is 2.5 miles long and is used by the train as well as vehicles. This tunnel only runs one way at a time. We have to queue up for our ride through. Fascinating. Just on the other side, the port. There's my ship!
I'm on board in no time at all. I hit the muster station to check in. Then up to the buffet for lunch. Sorry, no picture, I was hungry. After dropping off my carry-on luggage, I head up to the Spinnaker lounge for some peace and quiet.
The rooms are finally ready! I head down to unpack my carry-on and set up my C-PAP machine. My luggage hasn't arrived yet, so I may be having dinner in the clothes I worn this morning.
I head to the Spinnaker lounge for the solo traveler's meeting. The advantages of this group are that you get to meet other solo travelers, and the host will get a group reservation at one of the restaurants for dinner. There are a surprisingly large number of Canadians here. I'd say about 1/3 of the group. Several are from British Columbia about 5 from Ontario and one older gentleman from Newfoundland! That was a far trek! We head down for dinner and get to know each other.
When I get back my room, my luggage is there. So, I unpack and head to bed. It has been a long day for some reason.Læs mere
Wooly Beasts
25. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C
Today is overcast, and I have had some light to moderate rain on my travels today. The temperatures are in the 10-15 C (50-60F) range. You can't guarantee the weather, so you dress appropriately. I had another great sleep. Must be the fresh northern air. Another thing to mention is the amount of daylight they have here at this time of year. the sun rises at 4:49 AM and doesn't set until 11:04 PM. The place I'm in has good black out blinds, so I have no issue sleeping.
After a good breakfast of yogurt and melon with a banana muffin, I pack my sandwich and head north. I am heading to Palmer today. As I am driving, I see a cutoff for Old Glen Hwy. Well, anything old must be good (kind of like me!) So off I go. It is a windy two lane road that goes through some beautiful forests. Check out the picture below. It may take a little longer, but I have time.
I pass the Git n Go liquor store. I kid you not! I couldn't make up that name. I am out in the backwoods, and it shows. I'm hoping to see a moose or bear or something, but no luck. I do find the Musk Ox Farm (www.muskoxfarm.org) I wanted to check this place out. They are a farm that actually harvests the Qiviut from the musk ox and spin it into wool. Qiviut is the undercoat that the musk ox shed in the spring after the cold winters. It is what gives them that shaggy look in the pictures. After they gather it, they send it to Peru to have is carded, washed, and spun into wool.
We head out to the pastures where the musk ox are in different enclosures. There are 3 mommas with their babies in one. The youngest is a week and a half old. They are about 15 pounds when they are born and gain about 10 pounds per week. They have other enclosures with musk ox at different ages. The tour takes about 45 minutes. They are closely related to goats, just bigger and lazier.
Inside they have wool and knit wear made from them. I, of course, have to check it out. Their wool is not good for socks, but it is good for scarfs, hats, and leg warmers. It is a very fine, lace weight yarn. One skein that may do a small scarf is about $180.00 - $200.00. A little rich for my blood. It is very soft, but I'm not paying that much for wool. The wool stays here.
I did drive over to the Reindeer Farm, but it looked more like a petting zoo, so I came back instead. The drive back is just as nice.
I have to pack up tonight because tomorrow I'm heading to the cruise. It has been a fun couple of days here in Anchorage, and I would recommend it to anyone. You would have to rent a car to get anywhere.
I will post tomorrow from the ship!Læs mere
Let's Explore...And Not Get Lost
24. maj 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C
Day 2 starts with a cup of coffee after a very restful sleep. The place I'm in is very nice for a few days, (even a week if you want). It is clean, quiet has a good mattress. there is off street parking but no view or outdoor space. Everything seems to be working well as far as the water pressure, fridge, coffeemaker.
I'm going to pack a little lunch and head off today out of Anchorage. I think I will head to Seward. Today is a beautiful day for a drive. Clear skies and a temperature of about 19C. (68F)
Do you know how you turn a 2.5 hour drive into 4 hours? You stop to take pictures! Then you see a wildlife conservation center. Then you take more pictures along the way. My drive to Seward was along the scenic drive Hwy 1. This reminded me so much of Norway last year. The mountains and lakes and streams and marshes were beautiful. Since the car doesn't have a GPS in it, I use my phone to navigate. I always buy an e-sim when traveling. I use an app called Airola, but there are many out there.
Traffic is good getting out of Anchorage, and the highway is one lane but opens up with passing lanes quite frequently. There are also pull offs for picture taking as well. Way to go Alaska road works! The amazing thing that I noticed was the colour of the water. It is an amazing glacial blue green colour. I don't know if that is from the plankton in the water or the way the sun is hitting. Check out the many pictures below. I didn't see any wildlife in their natural habitat, but I did come across the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. (www.alaskawildlife.org) Entrance fee is $27.00. It is open all year, and they have many enclosures with different types of animals from foxes to elk, from muskox to black bears. You can walk the 1.5 mile path or you can drive. I chose to walk because I so need the exercise! Once again, check out the pictures. After my walk, I get a ginger ale and have my sandwich.
On the road again, I head to Seward. Of course, I have to stop and get some more scenic shots along the way. I finally make it to Seward. Seward is a fishing town south of Anchorage situated on the Gulf of Alaska. It is on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula. They do have a Main Street shopping area, but I didn't venture down it. I head down to the water to find the Alaska Sea Life Center (www.askasealife.org). Entrance fee is $40.05. This one has tans filled with everything sea dwelling. They have starfish, lobsters, crabs, sea urchins, Alaskan skate, salmon, and of course seals! It was harder to get shots through the tanks, but I tried. They also had sea birds like puffins, elders, and ducks. More picture opportunities!
Okay, time to drive back. The drive down took 4+ hours, I tell myself that the drive home will be shorter. I do make it back in about 3 hours. I stop at Carrs (grocery store) and pick up a pre-made soup for dinner. I have sandwich stuff and potato salad to go with it.
I will sleep well again tonight. Tomorrow is another day.Læs mere

Great pics. Love travelling with you in your writing. What gorgeous scenery and wildlife. Thank you for sharing. Safe travels. [Mary Lou]
North to Alaska...
23. maj 2025, Canada ⋅ 🌧 8 °C
I am back with another adventure. This time, I'm off to Alaska. I have 3 days in Anchorage before heading to Whittier for a cruise.
I was up early at 3 AM for a 4:30 pickup. The weather is rainy and cool. The drive is quite pleasant. I use Airport Limousine for travel to and from the airport. They haven't let me down in over 5 years. At the airport, I am through security and into the lounge by 5:45. My flight doesn't take off until 8:30, so I have plenty of time for some breakfast and coffee.
This is not a direct flight, unfortunately. I fly to Vancouver, then have to go through security again to fly to Anchorage. I should get there by 4:00 PM. I have a rental car waiting at the airport for the next 3 days. I have booked an Air BnB while I'm in Anchorage.
A smooth first flight to Vancouver. My flight to Anchorage is delayed by half an hour. I have plopped myself in another Priority Pass Lounge with comfy chairs, food, and wine.
I lucked out with the second flight. We had an empty seat in our row. This was a 3÷ hour flight, so it's not so bad. This is a small airport but with interesting displays. Check out the airport pictures.
I pick up my rental car. It was supposed to be an SUV, but I ended up with a Malibu that doesn't even have a GPS. I am disappointed. It is only for a couple of days, so I'll live with it.
It only takes about 10 minutes to get to my Air BnB. So far, from what I have seen of Anchorage, it is a little run down. My place is on a quiet side street so that is good. I'm on the second floor, which means I'll be getting my exercise with the stairs.
The next adventure was getting groceries for the next couple of days. I found the local grocery store, Carry, and just got some buns, meat, and cheese. A few other things, but the bill was $60.00 US for too small paper bags. Ouch! Good thing I'm heading out the cruise Monday, and they can feed me!
I head back to write this up and will have an early bedtime. I'm working on an 18-hour day so far. See you tomorrow.Læs mere
Back To Reality
21. marts 2025, Honduras ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C
I wake up early again and head up to the Observation deck to write up yesterday's blog. I also need a coffee or two. Today, we have to be off the ship by 10 AM. I finished packing my toiletries and C-Pap machine. We are taking the shuttle from the cruise port to the airport. This is going to be a life-saver with Gabi in a wheelchair. I hope we can get through security quicker with our wheelchair riders. I checked us in on-line with United Airlines, so that should help speed things up.
We get off the ship with the help of two porters (one for each wheelchair), and the bus is waiting to take us to the airport. So far, so good. It is a 1½ ride to the airport. Once there the driver helps us get the porters with the wheel chairs and the luggage. There are no special wheelchair lines for this airport. The security line is not too bad at all really. We make it through, and my bag is redirected for inspection. I have no idea why. How about a stupid mistake of not emptying the water bottle before going through security? Yeah, my fault. So back I go through the security line again. Ken and Gabi are through and waiting for me when I get to the gate. We are at the airport early for our flight. We have another 6 hours before take-off. I spot a lounge where I can buy passes for the day. We head over there and can at least have a nice place to sit, food and beverages for the afternoon.
We get pre-boarding due to the wheel chairs and are in our seats with our carry-ons stored before anyone else boards. This is a huge blessing for me. Finally, I can sit back and relax! The flight is good, and I have a couple of movies that I downloaded before the flight to watch. We arrive in Toronto without a hitch. We are the last off (just easier for me). The porters are there to get us through security and to our limo spot. The only pain is that when you land there are no luggage carts. So, I have all our suitcases to haul through security and to our exit door.
Our limo is there in no time at all, and we are finally on our way home. I get off first and then Ken and Gabi get dropped off. All in all, the cruise was lovely and apart from the accident we had a good time. Everyone got back in one piece, so that is what matters most. Until next time, safe travels.Læs mere
Last Day On Board
21. marts 2025, Canada ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C
This morning starts as always with my morning walk on the deck. It is another beautiful day today. Pleasant temperatures, gently breeze. Today is a sea day and our last day on board.
Ken and Gabi meet me around 9 AM up in the Observation lounge while I'm writing the blog. Gabi slept well and her ankle has gone down a lot. We head to the Local for breakfast. I have the pancakes, sausage and fruit salad. Ken does the American breakfast, and Gabi has the pancakes as well. The pancakes are light and fluffy and just the right amount to satisfy.
After breakfast I head to the shops. Ken and Gabi head up to their room. The one thing that I am missing on this trip is a small clutch purse for the evening. I have a sling bag purse that I take off ship with me, but it is a little large. They have the purses on 2 for $25.00. I pick up a black and a taupe one. This should work for both capsule wardrobes that I take with me. They have plenty of other stuff, but I only wanted the purses. I check out some Maui Jim sunglasses. They are pretty expensive on board about $225.00. They had one pair that were nice, but I have a pair, and I really don't need another.
After shopping, I head to the Casino for some fun time. The weather has turned nasty outside with high winds and clouds. The captain has closed the decks again. Hence, the Casino is some good entertainment. I actually haven't done bad this cruise and am about even. I try my luck and am actually up a bit. I leave with some play money for tonight.
Back in the room, I start packing. We are going to go with the ship taking our luggage on shore for us. Since Gabi is in the wheelchair and Ken needs one as well, we are not going to try and take luggage with us as well. I have my luggage packed with all my souvenirs. I have bought 2 packages of coffee beans, one wooden bowl, 2 purses, and 3 shot glasses. I have to get creative when packing. So, the shot glasses go in the purses, the coffee beans go inside my shoes, etc. It all fits. I make sure to keep out my travel clothes which will also be my clothes for dinner as well. That done and with luggage tags attached and filled out, I can take my afternoon nap.
On our way to dinner, we have to pass the shops again. I have been looking at the Citizen watches all cruise. I stop to take a look and yes, I buy one. The thing that I like about Citizen is that they don't have batteries to change, they charge by light. It doesn't have to be sun light; it can be any light. It really is quite amazing. The price is a couple of buck cheaper than the website, so I don't feel ripped off. Our last supper is at Hudson’s. Ken and I have the grouper, and Gabi goes for the lemon pepper shrimp. As always dinner is lovely.
After dinner Ken and Gabi go back to pack. I head down to the Casino again. I actually win again. This time a jackpot win. Apparently, Canadians don’t have to pay taxes on winnings. (That means that Americans do!) My new watch is now paid for and then some. Enough for another cruise. Yay me! Okay, let's head off to bed before I lose it all back. Tomorrow is going to be a challenge again!Læs mere
Cozumel and Hospital
20. marts 2025, Canada ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C
I was right, today is a challenge. Today is Ken's 70th birthday. It is another beautiful day, and we are in Cozumel, Mexico. I head down for my regular morning walk. It is an enjoyable walk since there is little humidity and a gentle breeze. I need to get my walk in now cause I'm not sure what the day is going to hold. I grab a coffee and Danish in the Observation Lounge on deck 17.
By 8 AM I’m calling Medical to find out what is going on. We have an appointment at the hospital for 9:30 AM. I head over to Ken and Gabi’s, so we are all together. We get 2 wheelchairs and off we go. Norwegian has been really great in assisting us through this! They get Ken and Gabi off the ship, down the (very long) pier, through the crew access gate and wait until we get a taxi. Once in the taxi, it is only a 15-minute drive to the hospital. Once there, we register, and Gabi is whisked away. Ken and I have to sit in the waiting area. Impressions are that this is a very clean and well-kept hospital. I don't have any experience with hospitals outside of Canada, but this one is either very new, or they just maintain them better. The seats are comfortable, the noise level is low. The smell level is normal, this is more like a doctor’s office than a hospital. There is even a smoking area for Ken outside.
Poor Ken, this is not how he wanted to spend a birthday, and he is very worried about Gabi. I think he also blames himself since they were up on the 18th deck for Ken to have a smoke. It is really nobody's fault. Accidents happen and that’s it. We are waiting for the better part of 3 hours there. At least we can get up and walk around outside. The hospital is on a side street. There seems to be existing and new construction, but I don't wander far. I'm sure I scream ‘Tourist'. However, after the 3 hours, Gabi is cleared for travel. There are no fractures, bleeds or concussions. Thank goodness. It Gabi had not been cleared for travel the ship would not let her back on board. That would mean that Ken and I would have to pack everything up and find a place to stay until Gabi could travel. That would also mean canceling our flight out of Houston and getting one from Mexico. However, this is not the case. We are good to go. We get another taxi, who takes us to a Pharmacy to get Gabi her prescriptions and head back to the ship. Everyone in Mexico has been great. They all speak some level of English that makes this process easier. The are all very helpful. The cost wasn't that bad, I thought. The CT scan, examine and documentation for the ship at the hospital was a little over $1,100.00 US. The prescriptions were another $100.00 US. However, the best news is that Gabi is fine.
Once back at port, we don't have to wait long for Norwegian to send a couple of wheelchairs to get us back to the ship. We have to get Medical to clear Gabi at security. Then we are good to go.
When we get up to the room, Ken gets the surprise of the room decorations that I arranged for his birthday! Now we can start celebrating. We finally get something to eat around 2PM. The rest of the day is spent with a dip in the hot tub and a couple of drinks. Time for a nap before a later dinner.
We have a nice dinner at the Commodore restaurant. Everyone wishes Ken a happy birthday. Ken does the steak; Gabi the pasta and I have my favourite lamb shank. At the end of dinner, they even bring Ken a birthday cake. Well at least the day has ended well. We hit the Casino and then it is off to bed. Tomorrow is our last full day on board. It is also a sea day which means that it will be a crowded ship.Læs mere
Roatan Is Still Beautiful
19. marts 2025, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C
It is a beautiful day in Rotan, Honduras. I head down to deck 8 for my morning walk. As I'm walking, I am greeted by the sound of a rooster. After making a few laps, I head to the Observation deck to write up yesterday's blog and wait for my trip mates.
My trip mates join me around 9:00 AM. Gabi has two black eyes and is moving very slowly. Gabi has a cane from medical but is still unstable on her feet. She said she slept well, though, so that is good. Ken doesn't look like he slept well. I think he is blaming himself for the accident. We keep telling him that accident can happen anywhere or at any time.
We head to The Local for breakfast. This time, I do have the French Toast. Oh, is it ever good! Soft on the inside but crunchy on the outside (kind of like this writer :>) It also has raisins, which is nice. I pair it with a fruit salad, perfect!
We head up to the pool deck and have a slow morning. We find a nice dining area where we can sit at a table with higher chairs. This is more comfortable for me as well as Gabi. We all have issues with how low the deck chairs are! We do lunch at the buffet and then head back to our rooms for some quiet time.
We meet up for dinner around 6 as usual. Gabi is feeling a little worse, so I call for her to go back to medical. The doctor (Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome) doesn't like the look of her raccoon eyes. Gabi is still having quite a bit of pain as well. So, he decides that a CT scan is in order. This will have to be done on shore in Cozumel tomorrow. The medical team on board will set everything up and let us know in the morning when. They will handle all the details of transportation and booking the appointments. The doctor said that there will be a liaison between the ship and the hospital to help us navigate this. They also said that the hospital will communicate with the ship directly. He said that this is one of the only ports that do this. Gabi is given a shot for the pain, and we get her a wheelchair for the rest of her time on board. Norwegian is really very accommodating and helping us out as much as possible. It gives you the warm and fuzzies knowing how organized they are.
We then head to dinner. I finally get the steak. I can't get a Guinness in the dining room, but a nice Malbec wine will go nicely. The steak is cooked to perfection! Ken has the fried chicken with a cob of corn, and Gabi does the potato gnocchi again. Dinner is marvelous as always. After dinner, Ken and Gabi head back to their room.
I head to the shops to get my last two charms. On Thursday, I can get my cruise ship charm and finish my bracelet. I head to the Casino and actually stay even for the night. It is off to bed since I think tomorrow is going to be a challenge.Læs mere
Private Islands, Animals and Boo Boos
17. marts 2025, Belize ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C
Today, they have opened up the decks. I get to do my morning walk outside today! I'm up early after a wonderful sleep and head out for my walk. They have most of the deck open, and I can get my steps in for the morning. I have been averaging about 7000 steps per day, which is good for me. The seas are calmer, and I think we have slowed down quite a bit. It is so nice to walk on the deck in the open air. They have a great gym on board, but I prefer to walk out in the open air.
I head up to the Observation deck to write up yesterday's blog and have my morning coffee. This is a relatively quiet area with tables where I can ‘wake up' with coffee and amazing views. This is our meeting place, every morning.
Ken and Gabi meet me around 9:30 and we head to the Local restaurant today for breakfast. Gabi and I go with the oatmeal, and Ken does some really delicious French Toast. After breakfast Gabi and I decide to head ashore. We are in Harvest Caye, Belize today and the weather is a little overcast and humid. Surprise, we are in the Caribbean. We are docked on the private island that Norwegian owns. They have a really long pier to walk but they also have golf carts that take you to the shopping and tour area. I did the walk in January, but it is a little more humid today, and Gabi would never make it.
Once in the shop area, we start our stroll and come across many shops selling various wears from jewelry to t-shirts to woven baskets. There is also a small wildlife area. We head there first. The first exhibit is a butterfly area. We have to walk into one door and then another. This is so that the butterflies don't escape! There are two kinds of butterflies in the enclosure. One is a pretty blue and the other is a brown one. They are flying all around us, and it is so cool. They have a box where there are pupa waiting to hatch into butterflies. They are in different stages of development, so this is interesting to see. Next up in the animal world is the Green Iguana, although I think he looks brown. He also does not look happy. He looks rather board. The next enclosure has the beautiful Scarlet Macaw. Their plumage is just stunning! They pose nicely for the tourist and keep the squawking down to a minimum. We exit the wildlife area to head toward the lighthouse. This is actually set up as a zip lining attraction. Yeah, NO! Let's head back to the shops. We pass a nice beach and waterpark area for the kids. Along the way we pick up some shot glasses for me, a wooden bowl for both of us. The best part is the chocolate and coffee shop. Yes, please. I grab a couple bags of beans, and we each get a chocolate bar. Okay, time to head back to the ship.
Once safely aboard, we do lunch at Indulge. We then go our separate ways, and I head back to the cabin for rest time. Ken and Gabi head up to deck 18 for the smoking area. Once up top, Gabi trips and falls after hitting one of the umbrella bases. Down she goes for the count. Unfortunately, she hit her head pretty hard. She was bleeding from her nose and hit her leg pretty hard. She was taken to medical, where she got x-rays and was checked out by a very good-looking doctor (who unfortunately had a wedding ring). Three hours later, they were released with a cane. Gabi has some bruising and swelling but is okay overall.
Gabi stayed in bed for the rest of the evening. Ken and I went to Hudson's for dinner. Ken had the steak again, and I had the grouper. We went back to order Gabi some dinner. We have an early evening.

Seems like Every cruise line has a private island these days! That port shouldn’t count as a country visit! Altho I was glad when they said we would be in Haiti! ( more like Haiti Disney, it was their own private port . Very pretty and safe; no poverty, and No one shot at us! Whew!) [Ellen😏]

PS sorry for your friends injuries! Always my fear! Hope she can still enjoy your travels - with modifications…sigh. Here’s to good weather, smooth seas, at the least, she’ll still have great views and amazing food! [Me again, Ellen]
Finally, The Ship To Ourselves
16. marts 2025, Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C
Today we are arriving at Costa Maya, Mexico. The weather has been a bit rough and windy since we boarded. The captain announced that we were going to be docking an hour later than expected. The decks are still closed so, I head up to the gym for a walk on the tread mill.
After, I head to the Observation deck to wait for Ken and Gabi to start their day. We head down for breakfast at the buffet. It is of course a zoo. One of the crew finds us a table and then we head into the mob for a do-si-do to get breakfast. Good thing I get my coffee quota in the Observation deck! They have a wonderful selection of food but my favourite for breakfast is still an omelet. They do have some cinnamon buns that I sneak in and some pineapple and grapefruit. It is too loud for my liking, so I think I'll stick to the Hudson for breakfast. Much more civilized for my advanced years.
After breakfast, we wonder to mid ship where the senior staff are answering questions about the ship and ship life. I'm always amazed at how they handle this hotel on water. So much care goes into food prep, storage and buying. The amount of laundry is just staggering. The fact that this is all handled seamlessly and with a smile is amazing. At least on a cruise ship you can still get excellent customer service. I jokingly call is the ‘Land of Yes', you never hear the word no. (The only exception was at dinner when I wanted a Guinness to go with my steak.)
Gabi is not feeling well today. Too much rocking and rolling, so they head back to their cabin where Gabi can get a Gravol. We'll meet up for lunch. I head to one of the shops to get my charms from Pandora. On the first day they had a $10.00 deal where you can get a bracelet and 5 charms. Every day after you can get 2 charms at $5.00 each, collect all 8 and you get the cruise ship charm for free. Yeah, it's a gimmick but I go for it. Back in 2014, my girls had gotten me a Pandora bracelet to fill when I was in Europe. I did a very good job of it back then and thought I would start another one.
We have lunch at Indulge. It is a unique eating experience for us. They have different types of food that you order at your table from tablet. I order a Caesar salad from one place and Pad Thai from another. Ken gets a pulled pork sandwich and fries. Gabi gets French Onion soup and prosciutto and cheese from another place. It is a cool way to have 10 different types of food in one place. After lunch, we head up to the pool deck. Ken and I finally get into the hot tub! Ken has a bad knee so; this helps him a lot. It also helps to loosen off my back. Finally, it is nap time!
Dinner tonight is in the Commodore restaurant. It has the same menu as the Hudson but a different atmosphere. We are seated right by the window which is nice. This is when I find out that I can't get a Guinness with dinner. Humph, I guess I don't get steak. I settle for the shrimp fettuccine alfredo; Ken gets the BBQ ribs and Gabi has the steak. This restaurant is nice, service is great (except the Guinness), but the décor is not as open and airy as the Hudson.Læs mere
First Full Day On Board
15. marts 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C
Our first full day onboard starts with heavy winds and rolling seas. The decks are closed, so I can't walk outside. The gym is usually packed, so I head up to deck 17. They have the observation deck up there, and you can walk around in a circle. I do 5 laps, but it is not the same. It is a great place to have a morning coffee and watch the ocean though. I think this is going to be my morning place to have a coffee and write this blog. It is reasonably quiet, plenty of coffee and nice comfy chairs with tables.
Ken and Gabi find me up here (I gave them a call), and we enjoy another coffee. We have breakfast in the Hudson restaurant today. The buffet is usually crowded, and I'm a big fan of quiet. If you eat in one of the restaurants, you get a great menu to select from, personalized service, and a great view of the ocean. I choose the spinach omelet and tomato juice. Gabi does oatmeal and Ken gets the breakfast special. All of us are full and happy. It is actually around 11 AM when are done.
Ken is smoker (no judgement here) and since the decks are closed, so is his smoking spot. Therefore, the only place left is the Casino which has a smoking area. So off we trot down there. Ken enjoys himself, and I lose $20.00, not really a fair exchange. We decide to go check out the different food places. They have a food area called Indulge. This area is all different food venues. You have a fry truck, a sushi area, a tex-mex area and so on. This area is just a cool place eat. After this, we all head down to a lounge to find a quiet place to chat. No pool or hot tub today due to weather.
We are traveling during March break, so there are plenty of children onboard. It is interesting to sit back, and people watch. Times have changed since my children were small. I can't see it being much of a vacation when you are dealing with a baby or toddler whose schedule has been thrown out of whack, in a different environment and without the conveniences that you have at home. So far, the children have been behaved, but we have a few that are running the halls and stairs. We haven't ventured to the pool area, so we'll see about that later.
We have lunch up at the buffet, and the choices are great. I have my salad, and Ken and Gabi have whatever they like as well. It is crowded but we manage to find a table. After lunch, we head back to our rooms for nap time.
We meet up for dinner at Hudson again. Ken has a very good-looking steak that might just be my dinner tomorrow. Gabi has the shrimp pasta, which was also very nice looking. I did the pork chop, which was excellent. Desert was just decadent. I did the After Eight Chocolate Mouse and inadvertently had also ordered the Warm Apple Strudel with ice cream. Yes, I ate both. Waste not, want not.
After dinner we wanted to see a show, but it was booked. So, we had to find a bar that had a blender so Gabi can have a Pina Colada. Mission accomplished, and all was good. Then we head off to bed.Læs mere
Back On The Beautiful Prima!
14. marts 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C
We awake this morning ready to take on the day! We have breakfast at the hotel. It is a little pricey at $25.00 each, but we won't have to pay for food for the rest of the week. Our doorman, Brian, got us a ride to the cruise port in Galveston. It is about an hour and ten minutes away from Houston. We ride in a black Lexus SUV. I like riding in comfort. Our driver is a chatty man from Oman or Jordan. Our first topic of conversation is gas prices. The gas in Houston is $1.39 a gallon. The price when I left Hamilton was about $1.50 a liter. If we do the math and include exchange on the money, that will equal roughly $8.00 a gallon! Let's move on, shall we. Our next topic of conversation is the difference between Canadians and Americans. I basically tell him that Canadians are more tolerant to differences and not so quick to be suspicious of our neighbours. We have a more outgoing, friendly, and curious personality. That, it takes a lot to get us riled, but when we are, we will defend ourselves. He couldn't understand why there was no fence between our two countries. Apparently, his country has fences, and if you try to cross illegally, you are shot on sight.
At the port terminal, our luggage is whisked away at once. We find Ken a wheelchair and then we get priority service again. This includes a porter to push Ken, priority check-in (take that Haven people!). We even have a shortcut onto the ship! Once aboard, we relaxed and waited for our rooms opened. We had to change my room and Ken's room. When we booked, I had to be in with Gabi and Ken had a solo cabin. Once on board, we went to Guest Services and had no issue with changing rooms. So now Ken and Gabi are in the balcony room, and I have an inside solo cabin. Our luggage arrives, and I do my nesting thing. This cabin is compact but has plenty of room for all my stuff. I have extra room in the closet, an extra drawer, and an extra shelf in the bathroom. The bed is a large single, almost a ¾ size bed. I have plenty of mirrors and great lighting. The only thing missing is a fridge. There is no window since it is an inside cabin, but that is okay with me. I have plenty of room for all my stuff. I don't have a fridge, but I have everything else. Check out the pictures.
We have dinner in the Hudson restaurant and enjoy a wonderful dinner as always. I love when someone else cooks, cleans and serves me! After dinner, Gabi goes back to the room, and Ken and I hit the Casino. He wants a smoke, and the upper deck is a wind tunnel. So, Ken can have a cigarette, and I can play the slots. I'm up for a change. Let's see how long that lasts.
Well, off to bed and a good night to all.Læs mere
Up, Up and Away
13. marts 2025, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C
Today is the travel day home. It has been a very pleasurable trip. I made some new acquaintances and saw new places. I add 2 new countries to my list of 'been there', albeit briefly.
I'm up early and grab some breakfast, then hide out in my room until 8 AM. My goal is to be the last person off, but that probably won't happen. My plane doesn't take off until 4:30 this afternoon so, I will be spending the day in airport lounges.
I exit my room by 8 AM like a good little passenger to allow the crew to clean the cabin for the next group of people. I wait in one of the lounges, biding my time.
I got off by 10:00 AM. Getting through customs and then waiting for the car was another 45 minutes. I should be at the airport by 11:30. I make it to the airport and through security. It's the same hassle as always.
I get to the Turkish Lounge, and they refuse my Priority Pass entry. Then I see that they have an Air Canada alliance. I work that angle, but I'm not flying business class. I then tried the Aeroplan card. Finally, she calls upstairs and allows me in. I don't get it. The place is more than half empty! The reason I bought the Priority Pass membership was to use these lounges. I'm going g to have to have a chit-chat with them in the very near future.
The lounge itself is nice. It is very large and has bright windows to the outside. The food is good so, this is my home for the next 4 hours.
I have made it on the plane and have the row to myself. I have the pizza because the crew said it had more flavour than the mac and cheese. We'll the pizza tasted like cardboard, so I'd hate to see what the mac and cheese was like. A small bottle of wine and some tomato juice should liven up my pallet. The flight is smooth, and I have a movie to watch.
We land early and safely. I actually get through customs and into the limo within 1/2 an hour. I'm home safe and sound by 9:10 PM. It has been a long day, but travel days usually are.
It has been a marvelous trip, and I can't wait to share the next one with you!Læs mere

Last Day In Paradise
13. januar 2025, Caymanøerne ⋅ 🌙 27 °C
Today is our last day at sea. That means tomorrow we are back in Miami. That is still not a hardship, though.
Today starts with my morning walk and my omelet and English muffin. Then I sat on the pool deck for the last time. I find it kind of funny as I look around and see people in long sleeves and long pants because it is a cool 28 C today.
I have lunch and head back to my room to pack. I'm all packed, including the stuff I bought. I met with the solo group for the last time. I won a water bottle for perfect attendance! We go to dinner and enjoy our last meal together. This has been fun, and I will have to explore these groups on future cruises.
The other thing I like about cruising is that you can try different drinks or wine. I have found 2 new wines to add to my repertoire. One from Argentina and one the Mosel region in Germany. One was a white Riesling, and one was a red.
Back in my room, I finished packing. I will get up early tomorrow to shower and leave by around 9:30 to go to the airport. I have already checked in with the airline, so I should be all set.
Good night, all, I'll be back tomorrow in Canada.Læs mere
Cozumel, The Last Cruise Port
12. januar 2025, Mexico ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C
We are in Mexico today. It is another beautiful day with a gentle breeze. We get in port at 11 AM and don't leave until 8 PM. I am really not a fan of Mexico. I've been there, done that type of thing. I am staying on board and relaxing by the pool. I had my morning walk on the jogging track and then had my usual breakfast of an omelette with an English muffin.
I get a nice chair by the pool in the shade. A swim, some reading, some chit-chat, and it is time for lunch.
I have a nice salad and a pork chop for lunch. I head back out to the pool deck, but the sun is creeping over my chair. I decide to head down to my cabin for a nap instead.
Tonight, I made reservations at Teppanyaki, which is a Japanese restaurant here on board. They cook and serve your dinner right in front of you. It was a great experience! I have pictures and some videos below. The food was amazing. I did scallops and shrimp. It was easily the best meal I have had on board. I am now stuffed and have to waddle back to my cabin to write this up.
Tomorrow is our last day on board and a sea day. That will be fine since I have to pack anyway.Læs mere
UnBelizably Beautiful
11. januar 2025, Belize ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C
Today, we are in Belize. Beautiful weather, sunny with a mild breeze.
Today, I am going on a snorkeling tour. After breakfast, I head off the ship. We are only an island called Harvest Caye. It is owned by Norwegian Cruise lines and for their exclusive use. The walkway onto the island is quite long, about a 15-minute walk. It is a lush island with loads of greenery and flowers.
At the marina we meet our group. Onto a medium-sized boat and off we go. There are 41 people in total. Thank goodness they split us up into smaller groups. They give us our gear and a great safety talk! These people are very safety conscious, and no group is bigger than 8 people.
I haven't been snorkeling in about 2 years, so I can't wait to get into the water. Last November, I had eye surgery to replace my lenses. This has greatly improved my eyesight where I don't need glasses anymore. I will be able to see all my little fishes sooo much better now! The water is warm and inviting, and I quickly realize that I haven't forgotten a thing. It feels totally natural for me to be floating around while our guide points out different kinds of fish. All the little fishes from grouper to Sargent majors to suffer fish and more have come out to see the tourists. Our guide also points out the different kinds of coral as well as a conch shell, sea urchins, and jellyfish. We are in the water for about an hour before we head back. Absolutely marvelous. The name of the tour was: H20Tierra (https://h2otierra.com/). If you're coming to Belize, look them up.
Now, here is where I vent about the quality of snorkellers out there. As a former diver, I can spot rookies a mile away. The ones who ha e no idea where they are in the water, who is around them, what is under them, etc. These are the people with fogged up masks, swimming (or dog peddling, bicycle pumping arm flaying) over you, into you, or are kicking your masks off. Dear God, it's a big ocean, spread out. These people are a hazard to the reef as well as other people.
Back on dry land, I head back to the ship for some lunch, shower, and a rest before dinner.
Our solo group met again, and we had fun doing charades. Then we did dinner in the Grand Pacific. Dinner tonight was potato soup and turkey scaloppine with gnocchi.Læs mere
Lazy Day At Sea
10. januar 2025, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌙 27 °C
Today was another sea day. I slept in today and had a late start. It is another beautiful day but windy. The captain has once again closed the jogging track. I was lucky today (probably because it's 9:30) and get a treadmill in the gym. I do my 25 minutes and then head for breakfast.
I spend a few hours on the sun deck reading and eavesdropping on conversations nearby. Apparently, there is an issue in Newfoundland somewhere with the minor hockey league poaching players and holding others back. Listening to the irate Mother's takes me back 25 years to our own drama in the hickey leagues. Nice to see nothing has changed.
Last night at the Solo group meeting, Macarena handed out these faux leather pouches to make to carry our electric cables. It was a cute activity that I did after lunch in the bistro.
To night at the Solo get-together, we did a group picture before dinner. Dinner tonight was in the Grand Pacific. The service is really slow. It took 15 minutes to have our orders taken. Another 20 minutes for it to get there. I had ordered a coffee with milk, and first, they brought Coffee mate, then another 5 minutes to get milk. When he gave me the milk, he took the spoon, so I had nothing to stir the coffee with. They are not getting good grades for dinner service. The meal was lovely, so the chefs get extra credit.
Tomorrow we are in Belize, and I have a tour. So, it is an early night for me.Læs mere
Sloths, Macaws, and Margays
9. januar 2025, Costa Rica ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C
Today, we are in Costa Rica. The weather is overcast and a little rainy. We are off to a sanctuary called Jaguar Rescue Center. (www.jaguarrescue.foundation) They mend their injuries and then rehabilitate them for release back in the wild. It takes us about an hour to get there. Their roads suck in Costa Rica, very bumpy.
Once there, we see the sloths that can not go back to the wild due to their injuries. There are Agouti wandering around the place. These are small mammals that look like large rats minus the tail. Next up were the macaws, noisy little birds. Then we saw the spider monkeys. One was a youngster and very active, and the other two were napping. We also saw a caiman who was very lazy as well. I think that they take such good care of these animals that they think they are on vacation! We rounded out the tour with an owl and then a margay. Cute kitty!
After the tour, we stopped at a place for lunch. Lunch was a typical meal for the locals: rice, beans, plantains, chicken, and coleslaw. Served with lemonade. Very delicious! Finally, back to the ship around 2:00 PM. It's time for a shower and a nap. I have been averaging 8000 steps a day! My Fitbit keeps telling me to lower my cardio load, but I can't on vacation.
Dinner tonight was wonderful. I had roasted vegetables with goat cheese, stuffed red pepper, and a chocolate lava cake for dessert. Tomorrow is a sea day, so I hope the weather is good.Læs mere
The Panama Canal
8. januar 2025, Panama ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C
Today, we are traveling through part of the Panama Canal. We are only going to Gatun Lake and dropping anchor for a few hours. Unfortunately, there is no swimming allowed. The decks are crowded, and the ship has opened the bow area to allow for better viewing.
It is hot and muggy today with overcast skies. Rain may be in the forecast today. I slept well as all nights on board. I check out the Canal before coffee even. A physical feat if I do say so myself!
I'm not going to cast any shade on the Panama Canal. It is a major feat of engineering. However, I live close to the Welland Canal in Ontario, so this one, while bigger and more globally important, is kind of the same. The surrounding jungle is impressive! There is mist coming up over the tree line and lush greenery as far as the eye can see.
We went through the locks to Gatun Lake. We tendered those who had excursions and just floated for a bit. There was a mix of commercial and pleasure ships going through. One busy place.
I have enjoyed the day on the pool deck. The water has heated up considerably since the start of the cruise. A nice warm bath now as opposed to a refreshing dip. We are heading back to Colon to pick up the other passengers, and then we will continue our to Costa Rica.
I had dinner with 'the gang' again. There were not as many since it was a late port. After dinner, I took on a comedy show with a gentleman named Jay Black
The theater is very nice, and it is a good after dinner wind down.
Just to add to the perfect day, I found out this evening that the last condition has been removed on the purchase of my new home. The day before I left, I had put in an offer for a condo. The closing date is February 27th, so I will have 6 weeks once I get back to pack up.Læs mere
Cartenga Columbia
7. januar 2025, Colombia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C
What idiot books a tour at 7 AM? That is my first thought when the alarm goes off at 5:30 AM. Then I realized that it was me. I am so not a morning person. I check my bag to make sure I have everything and head to the restaurant. One word: coffee. I can't stomach an omelet today, so I go for cottage cheese and fresh fruit and granola. Also, coffee, lots of coffee.
We meet on the pier at 7:00 AM. Our coach is air-conditioned, thank goodness. It is a hot and humid day in Cartagena. There is a haze in the air that will impede picture taking. Cartagena is split into two parts: the old city and the new city. The new city looks like a metropolitan anywhere in the world, and the old city is surrounded by a stone wall and has all the quaint charm of years gone bye. Our first stop is a bodega on the beach in a poorer section of town. Here, we have some coconut water and watch one of the locals cast the fishing nets at the shore. I think the egret was more successful. The only part that was sad was the amount of litter on the beach h. Then we stopped at a restaurant on the beach for a traditional breakfast of egg fried in cornmeal and one with meat. The coffee here is incredible.
Next up was the Emerald Museum. They had some interesting facts on the mining of emeralds. The jewelry was very expensive but pretty.
We have now stopped in the old city. It is surrounded by a wall that is from the 15th century. The streets are brick, and the architecture is amazing. The balconies here are made out of mahogany wood. We can't even get that in Canada.
I have bought some coffee beans and a couple of charms from Pandora to go on my bracelet.
I visited the cathedral. It is very beautiful. They still have their Christmas decorations up. Too hot for Christmas!
Before you get back to the ship, they have a small aviary with a sloth, iguana, parakeets, macaws, and peacocks. It was a beautiful way to end our stay in Columbia.
Back on the ship, it is a quick lunch, shower, and nap time before dinner. I once again enjoy dinner with our solo group.Læs mere
Sea Day #2
6. januar 2025, Caribbean Sea ⋅ 🌬 28 °C
Today is a sea day again, and the ship is noticeably crowded. The weather is not cooperating today. We have heavy skies, rain, and large swells. The pool deck is wet, so we need to walk carefully.
The pools and hot tubs are closed. The jogging track is closed, so I figure the only way to exercise today is to try the gym. As expected, there is not a treadmill available anywhere. That leaves me with walking the stairs. There are 9 decks I can go up and down (I only make it 5 each way).
That will have to do. Next up is breakfast. I have gotten very used to having someone make my omelet to order. That with an English muffin and coffee to round it all out. I try to sit on the pool deck, but the pool is splashing everyone. I head into the Spinaker lounge and do some knitting.
They have a presentation on the food and beverage department as well as the housekeeping department. It's very interesting to listen to. All the food on board is loaded in Miami. They do not get any food from the islands.
After the lecture I get some lunch. I then go back to my cabin for some peace and quiet.
I meet up with the solo group again and have dinner in the Magenta restaurant. The Caesar salad and Cordon Bleu chicken was very nice.
I have an early morning tomorrow, so I head back to the cabin to pack my bag.Læs mere
