Had breakfast at the resort at Terrace. Toured the East and Northern shores. Drove to the end of the highway while stopping at scenic overlooks, beaches, and a cave along the way. Had lunch at Ching Young Plaza at Bouchons Bar and Grill. Spent some time by the pool. Then headed to the Marriott for the sunset and dinner at Duke's Kauai.Read more

Early morning "embarking on this voyage by ship" - Greg

Sailed up the Napali Coast. Everything is only accessible by boat. People used to live there in fishing villages. Buried the bones of the deceased up the cliffs; goats; waterfalls dried up after plantations we're set up and water was diverted; caves, with sinkholes. Military missile defense on top of cliffs.

Sailed to the Forbidden Island of Niihau. Snorkeled at Mono Cave. Saw a turtle. People live on island on compound, self sustaining off the land. Private island. Lease small portions to government to cover land taxes.

Very bumpy ride back to Kauai after lunch and beer.

Halalu fish. Server was from York PA. Surfed LBI. We were so tired that we were delirious during dinner.

Koloa Landing Dive

Scuba. We saw frog fish, cleaner shrimp, poisonous fire worm, turtles, egg eating nudi branch, dragon eels, white mouth eels, yellow margin eel, lots of fish, 2 endemic fish (blue striped butterfly, Millet seed butterfly), crown of thorns, red slate erchin (pencil erchin)

Mallory was our 23 year old tour guide, only Greg and I in the tour. 2 tank dive on both sides of Bay. Mallory was from Iowa, did a study abroad (marine science) diving off the coast of Panama. Once she realized she liked diving, she moved to Mexico for awhile to do research diving, then moved to Saudi Arabia to do the same. Then moved to Kauai for a summer gig. In October it's back to Iowa, then in January she's moving to New Zealand for a master's/PhD program.Read more
