Arriving in Kiel

We’ve arrived!! Everything went well with our journey into Germany - 2 buses, 1 metro and 3 trains later (all in a total of 12 hours) we arrived in Kiel on a very cold morning! It was so lovely to see Sabine and Matze again and celebrate their 99 birthday 🥳 we had so much fun chatting to friends and family and enjoying the atmosphere. Matze took us on an evening bike ride along the coast where we enjoyed lovely views. That evening Josh made us delicious toasties and we watched the Disney movie Soul 🍿Read more

Exploring Hanover

Today we left Kiel and arrived in Hanover in the afternoon. We were greeted by Tristan, a friend of Joshua’s from University who’s from Hanover. We got a full tour of all the main historical sites and places around the city. We had to try the “best” Döner Hanover has to offer (safe to say it’s the best I’ve had so far) it was also funny to see the man-made wave for the surfers 🏄🏻‍♂️ Now we are enjoying a quiet evening at Tristan’s family home. Short but sweet

Yesterday we travelled for 5 hours by train to reach Fulda, where we met a good friends of Antje’s (Joshes mum). We were able to see a bit of the town too, including a church built in 820 a.c. Tomorrow we’ll make our way to Rodenbach to visit Oma Helga.Read more

Geburtsstadt der Brüder Grimm

Today we arrived in Hanau!! We started the day with sun which meant we could enjoy walking through the Altstadt and following along the path to see all the different sculptures representing stories from the Brothers Grimm. It unfortunately started to rain but we were still able to walk through the market and get a hot drink at a cafe ☕️

We look forward to staying in one place again with no trains until Saturday! 😁Read more

Frankfurt 🦋

Today we went to Frankfurt for the day. Feels a bit nostalgic coming back here for me, as it was the first city I saw in Germany/Europe and reminds me of our arrival here. Crazy to think that was only 2 months ago…😅

We visited the butterfly garden which was so beautiful. There’s something so pretty about the way they fly and all the different colours on their wings 🦋 Afterwards we made our way into the city, making a wise stop at the Lindt shop to pick out 2 chocolates each. They’re always so delicious and it was very hard to pick out our flavours. We explored some more, including a walk through the markt hall and IKEA.

In the evening we had dinner with Ute and Celina (Joshes mums cousins and Joshes second cousin) which was so lovely 🥰Read more

Today was magical! Despite the rain that poured in the morning, we had high hopes for better weather during the day. Oma Helga took us to the Winter Magic pre-Christmas market in Laubach. The drive to get there was filled with sights of orange and red trees which are so pretty to see. The market was amazing, I’ve never seen anything like it. The stalls surrounded the beautiful Schloss and really made for a picture perfect day. We enjoyed a few traditional market treats while we walked through and wished we could buy all of the amazing Christmas decor 🎄 I never realised how magical the Christmas season can feel, it’s quickly becoming my favourite time of the year ❤️⭐️Read more

Back ‘home’

Yesterday after long 8 hour journey from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, we made it back to quiet Amstelhoek aka ‘home’. We were feeling tired so decided to order some sushi from our neighbouring town Uithoorn. Turned out very tasty! We also made sure to stay up in time to watch the Rugby World Cup game which sadly New Zealand didn’t win but it was still a good game to watch!

Today we went to IKEA to get new pillows and some kitchen bits and bobs. It is definitely an experience shopping at IKEA, one which I can say I enjoy - we are yet to try the famous Swedish meatballs though 😅
