    Arrival 😄

    June 3, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

    They’ve arrived!!!!

After a long delay with passport check and bag collection, my family arrived at Schipol airport around 3pm yesterday. Because of the delay there was lots of confusion with arrival gates, so unfortunately I was all ready with my little sign at the wrong gate. But that’s okay, Joanna loved being able to surprise me by finding me in the crowds. It was the best feeling being able to give my sisters a big hug and smile, and for Mum and Dad too 🥰🥰 so happy to see them finally!Read more

  • Days in the city

    June 5, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

It’s been a busy time since the family arrived here in Amsterdam ☺️ we’ve been spending days in the city exploring all that it has to offer. On Tuesday we enjoyed lunch and then wandered through the busy streets, window shopping (with some success). Even being able to use public transport has meant getting to see all the in-between. On Tuesday we went for a beautiful canal tour, there’s something so special about seeing the city from the water. We had excellent guides who told interesting stories and facts about the history of the city and how it came to be. So far their opinions are: the city is big, busy and different, but very nice and very pretty 😁Read more

  • Birthday celebrations ⭐️

    June 6, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Yesterday my sisters and I celebrated our 24th birthday together 🥳 it worked out lucky that we got to spend the day together, meaning we’ve never spent a birthday apart 😁

Josh made us a delicious Biscoff cheesecake which we all really enjoyed. Then we made our way into Utrecht for a nice lunch out and exploring the stunning canals and city views 🌷 it was the perfect day!!Read more

  • Last day in Amsterdam

    June 7, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Today was our last day for the week in Amsterdam! We made sure to make a stop at Oslop studio (where I’ve been doing my internship) to say hello to Peter and Zoli, my two workmates. Everyone enjoyed meeting them and the studio dog, Ruby 🐶

After a nice fresh lunch we took a sunny stroll through Vondelpark, exploring parts of the garden I had yet to see. Of course we deserved an ice cream after all the walking, so we made sure to grab a scoop or two before taking the bus back. Tomorrow we take the train to our second stop, Cologne (Germany) so a picnic dinner by the calm Amstel was the perfect idea for our last evening in little Amstelhoek 💛

  • Köln for the weekend

    June 9, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

On Saturday we arrived in the sunny Köln 🌞We enjoyed the evening atmosphere at a nice restaurant Josh and I picked out (we’ve been before). Everyone liked their traditional German meals and Kölsch! 🍻

Because we had only one full day in the city, we got up early and Kobe, Emily, Joanna, Josh and I made our way up the Catherdral to get a nice view over the city and take in the impressive building that it is. With tired legs after 530 steps we made a stop to enjoy a big fix of Baumkuchen, Eis Schokolades and pancakes 😋😋 and spent the afternoon exploring the Altstadt and the Roman Church. We finished the day with a classic Döner to end our time in Germany 🇩🇪 I am glad we got to be here, even though a short time, it was enjoyed! Off to Copenhagen tomorrow…🚇

Yesterday we spent the day exploring Copenhagen! 🇩🇰 it was so cool to see the city and it was quite different to how we imagined it but very pretty, especially the Nyhavn buildings of course 🤩 after a big day we decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant which was very delicious and just what we needed 😋 onto Aarhus next (and we will be there for about a week, so more time to relax)Read more

  • Meeting family

    June 12, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ 🌬 13 °C

After a short time in Copenhagen, we made our way to Sjællands Odde by bus, to catch a ferry across to Aarhus!

In the evening we met Mums family for the first time after about 15 years of contact by email between NZ and DK. It was so special to see her meet her Danish siblings for the first time, and for us to meet them too 🥰 They were so friendly and welcoming and we look forward to spending more time with them across this week here in Aarhus. A very special moment for our family ❤️Read more

  • Days in Aarhus

    June 13, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

It’s been a few days since we arrived in Aarhus and it’s quickly become obvious that the weather here hasn’t been the best for us ☹️ but we’ve still made the most of it, and haven’t let it stop us from site-seeing. We visited Den Gamleb by (The Old Town) which is a collection of historical Danish buildings ranging between 1600-2014. We were immersed back in time when walking through the cobble stone streets and making our way in and out of the different houses and stores. It was really interesting to be able to see how people lived and to imagine what life might have been like back then…😌Read more

  • Family time

    June 14, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Across the weekend we got to spend time with our Danish family!! We had a pizza dinner at Bettina’s house on Friday night (her son is a chef so the pizza was top notch!). It was a good chance for us to all get to know each other more and also to share stories of family history and photo albums 🥰 and then on Sunday we visited Michael’s house and had an afternoon in the sun, enjoying tasty Danish treats and a BBQ dinner. Everything about meeting Mums family has been really important and special for us, and it’s been the perfect weekend getting to finally be with everyone ❤️🤍Read more

  • ARoS museum

    June 17, 2024 in Denmark ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Yesterday we visited the ARoS museum in Aarhus! The sunset panorama was one of the first things we saw when arriving at the bus station, so it was cool to finally go up and experience the views from the top. The work of Olafur Eliasson is incredible (despite getting a headache from all the bright coloured glass) it was very nice to get a 360 view above the city 💥

Our time in Aarhus has come to an end, as I write this from our train which is about to arrive in Hamburg. Today we will return to Amsterdam for the rest of the week. It has been the best time here, not only is Denmark a beautiful place, but it will always be a special one because we have our loving Danish family here ❤️🤍🇩🇰 grateful for this time

  • Back in Amsterdam

    June 18, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

After a long day of traveling from Denmark, we arrived in Amsterdam last night. It was quite stressful once arriving in Hamburg because our train was delayed, so it was looking like we weren’t going to make our next connection 😬 but thankfully after a quick sprint to our next train, we made it 😅

Today I took the sisters and Kobe out to the city….of course they had to try stroopwafel 😋 and then we also took a nice walk in the sunshine to De Pijp - one of my favourite areas in Amsterdam. In the evening, Josh made us all dinner (while watching the euro cup) 😁😁

  • Last night together 🤍

    June 20, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Yesterday we visited the Rijks Museum! It was the perfect activity for our last full day together for this trip. It’s such a huge museum with so much history and art to see. For dinner, Josh made the best butter chicken and homemade naan bread and we enjoyed playing card games together ☺️ I can’t believe how fast this time together has gone…🥲Read more

  • First goodbyes

    June 21, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

On Friday morning Josh and I went with my sisters and Kobe to the airport. It feels like this time has come around so fast, but I couldn’t be happier with how fun these last 3 weeks have been with them 🥹 I feel like we really made the most of our time together and it has been so nice to finally show them our place in the Netherlands as well as visiting our family in Denmark — and of course our weekend in Germany was great too 😁 lots of memories that will last a lifetime.

Until next time Joanna and Emily (and Kobe) 🥹🥹⭐️💗🤍 Thank you for visiting us!

  • Final goodbye

    June 21, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

After saying goodbye to my sisters on Friday, I went back to Uithoorn to enjoy my last day with my parents before they set off for their week in London together. We spent the day strolling around the area — which has given me a new perspective on the place, since I haven’t really been into many of the stores we have here. We even got to have a delicious dinner together at a local Chinese restaurant. We all really enjoyed the food (so yummy!) it’s been the best time having the family all together again ❤️

On Saturday we sent them off on their Eurostar journey to London 😁 and now it won’t be long until I get to go see everyone again in August — except this time, in Christchurch again 😊
