Our space tour continues. We love the movie ‘The Dish’, but had never imagined we might one day be staring up at it!

Well today we did. Had it not been for the film, we may never have heard of Parkes, or the part it played in Apollo 11, by bringing the ‘giant leap for mankind’ moment to the world back in ‘69.

The visitor centre is full of great models and snippets of info plus there is a short movie about the planets and how Parkes has contributed to our greater knowledge of ‘what’s out there’.

We had a cuppa looking up at the dish, which is still very much a staple in the world of radio telescopes - it’s work is by no means done, despite the visual gems provided by the JWST and Hubble.

It constantly scans (it was moving when we arrived) the skies for frequencies that are only found in space, and given off by celestial objects.

Once we’d had our fill of science (my brain cell was bulging), we pottered around Parkes for a bit before parking up for a late afternoon cuppa.
