  • Doon Doon

    June 20, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Quick refill for John and try to get some photos of the bush / hills. It is strange as you ride - the rocks / boulders look small on the hills but the ones tumbled down nearer are huge..... the suddenly there are cattle in amongst them - similar colours and standing in the shade. The tense bit is when half the group of cattle are on one side of the road and some on the other.... always waiting for one to sprint across. Doon Doon roadhouse has the first cane toad disposal bin I have seen... but that is way into WA so disappointing that they have got that far.Read more

  • Kununara

    June 20, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Here we are in the large Kimberley regional city of Kununurra. The ride in was glorious - twisty and wonderful scenery. There was one left hander right around the end of a bluff - one constant radius curve that went on and on. Swept down into Kununarra and then water- loads of it. The Ord diversion dam is filled from Lake Argyle , the Ord river dam. Legacy of Robert Menzies and Premier Brand. Camp ground good. Had some local Ginger Beer but it drinks way too easily.Read more

  • WA / NT border

    June 21, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

That’s it for WA - have sort of got used to being in WA so its a bit strange leaving already but we have ridden it bottom to top. Some of the scenery across the border.

  • Darwin - 2

    June 23, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Just jumping for joy at being able to get onto a wildlife cruise. Maybe even a croc as well....yes we did see jumping crocs. Also we got to see the sunset at Mindil beach and I purchased a kangaroo leather belt.Read more

  • Adelaide River - revisited

    June 24, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

A short run back to Adelaide River from Darwin. Nice spot under the trees at the Adelaide River Caravan Park. Visited the war cemetery where people killed in Darwin and surrounds as part of the bombing and in the rest of WWII are buried. Didn’t feel the ground move with the earthquake which happened around lunchtime today - we had just arrived and still on bikes I think.Read more

  • Emerald springs

    June 25, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Breakfast after a twisty ride along Dorat Road from AR. That road used to be the Stuart Hwy. saw a running stream for the first time in NT... George creek coming from Robin Falls. Just us and a couple of hundred head of cattle. From the outside you wouldn’t think it was open but in the side door everything changes.Read more

  • Mataranka

    June 25, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Territory Manor - Fancy name for the dirt patch we will call home for tonight. Down the road we found the Elsey National Park with the Bitter Springs hot springs. Lots of people taking the opportunity to float along with current in warm water. Special place with palms and different plants from the surrounding area. Great dinner at the camp ground restaurant - had the lamb shank which was fabulous. A picture of the bike with a termite mound finally.Read more

  • Threeways roadhouse & caravan pk

    June 26, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Long trip today as Our planned destination - Renner Springs (Pamayu) - had no powered sites. This road junction is shown on some maps as Warumungu. The landscape along the road today showed the differences out here. Grass and scrublands suddenly changed to flood plain with no grasses and larger trees but spread thinner. The ‘creek’ was crossed with a raised roadway and 3 (!) bridges more than a kilometre long all up.... all dry of course but it must be a fantastic sight in the wet.Read more

  • Avon downs

    June 27, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

A police station in the middle of nowhere but pf course an Avon Downs cattle station nearby. Has a history linked to Victoria as shown on the plaque..... also a Shakespeare creek just up the road.. seems appropriate.Read more

  • Camooweal - QLD

    June 27, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our first stop in Qld. The definition of ‘camp kitchen’ is something that needs a little standardisation but we have pitched the tents on grass (!) .... small mercies. Camooweal is the Drovers town in NW Qld. Has a festival in August dedicated to the memories of driving way of life. Visited the Drovers Camp just out of Camooweal. (droverscamp.com.au) Very good story boards and gallery of pictures of locals in pastel (artist Yvonne Dunmarre?)Read more

  • Mount Isa ... the ISA ....

    June 28, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Had a bit of an issue finding the centre of town but made it to the Coffee Club anyway. Fields of termite mounds on the way here, not large but lots of smaller ones less than a metre. Many areas like that on the ride into town. A couple of smoke stacks were evident but large mounds for tailings to the west of the town were all we could see of the processing.Read more

  • Cloncurry

    June 28, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

First picture was on a water tank high above the town on the way in. Used to be a big copper mining area before and during WW1. Sent a lot of copper to Great Britain for use in armaments. Gold also mined at towns now defunct in the surrounding area. Was told that there used to be 150+ drinking establishments in the towns hey day. The smell of the Gidget tree at this time of year is pretty bad (last for about a month) .... cross between sewerage and gas ... it is the trees pollinating apparently. We moved to a different area to cook dinner but will sleep back where the smell will waft through. It will encourage us to get an early start I think.Read more

  • Normanton

    June 29, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

It’s hot.... 32+ on the ride up from B&W. Scattered clouds so alternating sun or shadow. More termite mound fields... the road seemed to climb steadily from Cloncurry, then undulating, then descending into Normanton. Staying at the Gulflander caravan park. A visitor to the cp after dark..Read more
