Burra is an historic copper mining town (from about 1845) about 160km north of Adelaide. We came to visit family but the town is really worth anyone visiting - so many old buildings. Had a great dinner at the Burra Hotel. More in the next entryRead more

Burra, calls itself 'An Historic Copper Town and the Merino Capital of the World'. It did not become an official entity until 1940 when the tiny, separate mining communities of Aberdeen, New Aberdeen, Kooringa, Llwchwr, Redruth and Graham were drawn together under the name Burra.
There are a large number of the old buildings still n use today.
We had breakfast at St. Just cafe and Gill is pictured talking with a local in the cafe. Visited old wares shops, antique shops (expensive) and even the op shop .. all good.
The Anglican Church - the church of St. Mary has historically significant stained glass windows ( dating from 1860 to 1921) and also one of the best organs in Australia.

Lovely park to sit and have our bakery delights.
Unfortunately the garage closed a bit before we arrived.

  • Heysen the Cedars

    August 10, 2024 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Wonderful tour of the house and studio after obligatory morning tea. So good seeing where many of Hans Heysen’s pictures were created complete with preparatory drawings along with stories of the family. Nora Heysen’s studio with her painting smock, pallets etc. along with portraits from her war artist work was another highlight. It is also the setting of one of her fathers most popular paintings of his wife sewing near the window.
Hans loved nature so the property was very special to him and the garden is fabulous. He paid money to land owners and the council to protect numerous old trees around the area from being cut down.

The place to see across the causeway from the waterfront. Wonderful old horse drawn tram plies this route. Good views from all round this Little Rock and to the south and east blue water to the horizon just like Phillip Island. They also run penguins tours after dusk here as well…Read more

The ferry across the Murray river… this is free (!!) and runs 24hr a day. Amazing!
Nothing much else there … I imagined a town but it’s really now just the ferry. Must have been bigger once to have needed the courthouse.Read more

Robetown Motor Inn for the night tonight. There looks to be lots of historic buildings in town.
Back at the motel, after a swim in the heated indoor pool, we cooked our prepared Thai chicken and vegetables and rice (bought from the butcher in Meningie) in the communal kitchen. The wine with dinner came from the local limestone coast.Read more
