    Perth-Sydney-Brisbane

    September 30 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

We left Perth yesterday at 6am. Stopover at Sydney then onto Brisbane. Hotel not quite where we thought it was but all good in the end. Managed to see a bit of cricket while waiting for a train! Another 4am start as an eary flight to Rockhampton. John met us at the airport. A tour of Rockhampton (bits we hadn't seen before) then to Yeppoon for a look. Back to Rockhampton for lunch & then a walk around to see some lovely buildings.Read more

  • Rockhampton - Yeppoon

    October 1 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Didn't have to get up at 4am to catch a plane today. Up & ready to go by 10. John picked us up & took us up to the Mt Archer Lookout. Very impressive. Into Yeppoon for lunch at The Spinnaker. Tasty. Kim & Colleen joined us there after. A good catch up chat & they went for a ride. We went back to John's for a while. Jacko & John had a really good little jam session. Met up with Kim & Colleen again for dinner at Thai Tannee. Very good food.
Upon arrival at our motel room we couldn't find the key! John rang us to say it was on his kitchen bench, so he brought it back to us. 🤪

  • Yeppoon

    October 2 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

John picked us up this morning & we went out to Emu Park. Another lovely spot. There is a fantastic WW1 Memorial there. Also the Singing Ship which is dedicated to the arrival of Captain Cook. On breezy days the pipes 'sing' which they were doing beautifully today. We had a tasty lunch at the Pine Beach Hotel. Back to Yeppoon via the Shipwreck Lookout on Matthew Flinders Drive. The history in this Neck of the woods is amazing. Another jam session at John's. We farewelled him after a couple of great days with him. Met up with Kim & Colleen, then took part in a Quiz Night & came 2nd! Back to motel an 9. Off with Kim & Colleen tomorrow to parts unknown.Read more

  • Yeppoon to Monto

    October 3 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We left with Kim & Colleen this morning for parts unknown. Our first stop after climbing the range was the beautiful town of Mt Morgan. Lots of historical buildings & wonderful atmosphere. We had a drink at the Leichhardt Hotel while contemplating the bushfire ahead of us. Deciding to keep going, we headed off. No sign of smoke or fire. We arrived at the very little town of Dululu. We had a picnic lunch at the abandoned tennis courts. Lots of grain farming & harvesting. Many crops irrigated. Continued to Biloela for a drink at the Biloela Hotel. The town is a mix of mining & farming. Our final stop for the day was at Monto. Kim & Colleen parked up at the 'free camp' ($5). We booked into the Albert Hotel (once run by Ben Hall's sister Kate). We had a drink & decided to go for a walk around town. Got as far as the RSL & had a wonderful half hour with them all. Back to the Albert Hotel for tea.Read more

  • Monto to Biggenden

    October 4 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We started the morning in lovely Monto. Packed up and off we went. At a tiny place called Mulgildie, we came across the Bunyip. Our first stop was Eidsvold. A very, very pretty town. We walked up & down the main street. I met a lady in the op shop who filled me on a bit of town history. We had a drink at the Star Hotel (a wonderful refurbishment) before continuing our journey. Next stop was Mundeberra. Some locals were dressed to the nines waiting for the bus to take them to the races at Eidsvold. A very big event for the locals. We stopped at a picnic area at Reid's Creek for our picnic lunch. Only 1 magpie in attendance & he got all the leftovers. Our next stop was Gayndah. We were here 8 years ago & loved it. We visited the amazing museum (still $5 entry!). After that we had a drink at the Grand Hotel (the oldest pub in the oldest town on QLD) . Next stop was our final destination for the day - Biggenden. Gotta love the names. There is some sort of horse thing happening at the Show Grounds this weekend (QLD long weekend).
Booked into the Grand Hotel (lots of them out here). Had dinner at the Commercial (treated to a few people in spurs & a publican with a different sense of humour). After the Bessels went to bed we went out to the beer garden to listen to the live music. Hmmm. Into bed at 9pm & could still hear the noise from the beer garden.

  • Biggenden to Hervey Bay

    October 5 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After a sleep in (?) at the Grand Hotel in Biggenden (totally in love with this town), we met back at Kim & Colleen's caravan over the road only to discover that our phones had changed times with daylight saving, even though Queensland was not on daylight saving! We had to reset our phones to catch up with the rest of the world. We went for a walk around town & was very impressed with what we saw. We headed out & stopped at Childers. What a totally wonderful place. We walked up & down the main street (Bruce Highway), so impressed with everything. Very picturesque town. We visited the memorial for the Childers Backpackers Fire of 2000. Very moving & well done. Two pub visits & then away for our destination- Hervey Bay.
We are very impressed with the Air B&B. Short walk to dinner to claim our footy bet! Tasty dinner. NRL grand final on, but of no real interest to us. Hervey Bay is a great spot. Once again an Augusta feel. Back to our accommodation for a relaxing evening after an action packed few days. Thank you to Kim & Colleen for letting us occupy the back seat & taking part in their adventure around Australia 💕💕💕

  • Hervey Bay (Urangan) to Nambour

    October 6 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Early morning walk to the Marina. Packed up & left house at around 8.30am. Traffic on Bruce Highway not too bad. We were very impressed with Maryborough. The amount of beautiful Queenslander homes was amazing. They are beautiful. The preserved architecture in the main street was astounding. First stop was Cooroy. This was to be our farewell to Kim & Colleen, but the bus was ages away so we continued on to Eumundi. What a discovery this little town was! We had a drink at the beautiful Imperial Hotel and this time parted ways with the Bessell's. We have had a wonderful few days with them exploring some great little towns. They are off to pick up their grandies from Sunshine Coast Airport. The publican let us leave our bags behind the bar so that we could wander around. We dropped into the Sunshine Coast version Matso's (the only one outside of Broome). Back to the Imperial for lunch & who should arrive with grandies in tow? The Bessell's!!! After farewell #3 we headed for the bus stop to take us to Yandina. A great little pub (moved there on rollers from somewhere). Another lovely little town with preserved architecture.
The next bus to take us on was very late (we rang the information line & the man was very helpful). We ended up getting the train to Nambour (1 stop). We called in to the Commercial Hotel & decided to book in for the night. Walking around we discovered the 2 other pubs were shut today, so took the train (1 stop) to Woombye & had a light dinner there. Nice little pub that has got some major renovations coming soon. We got the train back & happy to get into bed.

  • Nambour to Perth

    October 7 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We left the hotel at 9am and got on the train for a short ride to Landsborough. This pub was relocated from somewhere on skids (the 2nd pub we have found that has done this). It was moved each night & opened during each day to avoid mutiny! This took 2 weeks! At the train station, there is a WW2 bomb shelter. The entrance has been blocked off. Back onto the train to Beerwah. Attractive art Deco pub. We had lunch there. Jacko had a pork knuckle & said it was much better than the one he had in Germany! Onto the train again for the next stop at Glass House Mountains. Modern pub. Captain Cook named the mountains saying they resembled the glass making kilns in Yorkshire.
Back on the train & after a couple of changed ended up at the airport. We spent a few hours plane & crowd watching (highly entertaining!). Our flight left at 8.25pm (EST) & we landed to a cold & damp night (midnight WST). We were in bed at the motel by 1am.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time with our friends exploring some wonderful countryside & towns.
Queensland has done a wonderful job of retaining and maintaining its heritage.
