  • Sites around Porto

    April 1, 2023 in Portugal

Our last day in Porto was damp, cold and rainy. Our main objective was to see the bookstore.
We took a few pictures and then went out for a nice dinner at a traditional Portuguese restaurant .

  • Leaving for Tavira

    April 2, 2023 in Portugal

This is an early start. Our train is scheduled to leave at 05:32. We Uber to the train station and don’t see it listed on the departures. There is nobody around to ask about the status of our train. Another couple is here as well, and they are wondering about the same train. They speak English and as it turns out are from Calgary too. The girl is member of our gym.

A nice lady who speaks Portuguese as well as English and is trying to take the same train is able to discern the plan. We are to take a bus to Aveiro and board the train there due to track maintenance that is happening between Porto and Aveiro. Following her lead, we get on a bus and end up boarding the train in Aveiro. The rest of the day is without drama. The train ride south of Lisbon is scenic, sunny and inviting. In Tavira we find our very pleasant Air BnB ready for us.

  • Seven Hanging Valley’s Hike

    April 3, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

After a 50 minute drive to the trailhead at Praia de Vole Centianes, six hikers are guided by Nuna. He lives in the region and conveys his knowledge of the area in two languages, French and English. He speaks Portuguese as well but today our group is from France and Canada.Read more

  • We are still hiking….

    April 3, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Bengal beach. The hike is scenic but slower than Dianne and I like to go. We stop a lot and Nuna talks about the sights. He has to say things in two languages so it can be long winded.

  • On to Lagos

    April 4, 2023 in Portugal

A quick train trip North and we are in Lagos. As you can see I brought Tom the “happy camper”! It was not really that quick, we changed trains in Faro and continued up the coast. Three hours or so, however our hotel is within walking distance of the train so that worked out perfect.
Settled in our hotel we took the tram to the beach! Duma beach is a long, white sand beach with freezing water!

  • Around town

    April 4, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Lagos is very different from Tavira. More big city but very much a beach town. Lots of beach activities; swimming, boating, paddle boarding, kayaking to name a few. Locals are very friendly and helpful. We walked around a lot and always felt safe. We really liked Lagos and what it had to offer.
Our dinner that first night was much desired fish’n chips! And we found the best place “ol Bastards” offered fish’n chips English, Australian and British style! Perfect! I had British and Tom Australian. Both were delish!

  • Ponta da Piedade

    April 5, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Here we go again! Dianne has another great idea! Boat ride to see the caves! Sounds ok but in reality it was one fun 75 minutes! It was neat to see the caves like the ones we walked over in our previous hike. Again we put our cameras to work and took a few shots!Read more

  • Last pics of caves

    April 5, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I said there were a few pictures! It was pretty cool as the ocean was a little rough and our captain no difficulty maneuvering us into and out of the caves, sometimes it made for quite a ride, for me a pretty good adrenaline rush!Read more

  • Afternoon of browsing

    April 5, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

What a gorgeous day to browse. Lagos has many local musicians striking up a tune outside the shops, restaurants are busy, many tourists and locals enjoying the day outside.
We are not really shopping for anything but Tom (the shopper) found something he liked!
After the afternoon of browsing we sat outside on our deck with some nosh and drinks!

  • Back to Lisboa

    April 6, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Our last day, we had a drink by the pool, joined by Toms friend. Dianne calls the seagull in the picture my friend but really it's only an acquaintance. I gave it one crumb of corn and the next thing you know, it is stealing the baguette from an a nearby table. People fighting with the bird and his friends. Entertaining.
After we enjoyed dinner at a restaurant close to the hotel.
We got up early went for a walk for an hour, spent an hour at the pool( sorry no pics) and got ready for the four hour train ride to Lisboa!

  • On our way home

    April 6, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

It is almost Easter and these cute bunnies greeted us in the morning! A four hour train trip from Lagos to Lisbon. Overnight and then head to airport at 830am for our 1250 flight!
Flight to Toronto was good as to Calgary. Just a very long day! We and our luggage arrived on the same flight!

Would we visit Portugal again? Absolutely, it is a beautiful country, friendly people, lots of history, great hiking, beaches and delicious pasties! What else is there to say!
