Pasajes de San Juan

We headed out of Irun around 8. A little trouble finding the start of the trail, but with encouragement and help from people on the streets we got going. The trail was STEEP and went STRAIGHT UP THE HILL. Wow, someone should introduce the Spanish to the concept of switchbacks. We went up and up. And then we went up and also up. Great views of the city below on one side of the ridge and the ocean on the other side. Stopped at a sanctuary on the way. We made it to the top on in good health, thanks to lots of rest stops and stretching. Coming down… not so easy. We got off the track and ended up taking more time, but through some spectacular and rougher terrain. While uphill took more energy, downhill took a greater physical toll. Eating aspirin like popcorn helped (not really Debbie!). Into town, hotel, showers, dinner, glass of wine… Along the trail we started meeting other pilgrims (as they passed us) which was really nice. Local people seem excited that the Camino was starting up again. All in all, a good day that had some challenges that we overcame, are overcoming, are working on! Buen Camino!Meer informatie
