    Wat Samrong Knong, Battambang, Cambodia

    January 17 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A large wat with ancient structures surrounding it, the site was used by the Khmer Rouge as a prison with interrogation and torture rooms, as well as a killing field.

There was a large stupa dedicated to the innocent lives lost, called the Well of Shadows, which includes scenes of the atrocies commited as well as ashes and skulls of victims. On the site there is also small musuem and a school, that is used to both teach children about the acts of the Khmer Rouge as well as further their education with English lessons.

A sombering part of the day, and an honest conversation with our tuk tuk driver, who was grateful that his parents were only put to hard labour during this time. He told stories of starvation, and witnessing horrendous acts, as well as his frustration in the current political climate. As with all Cambodians we have spoken with, he looks forward to better times for his children.
