  • Water Puppet Theatre, Hanoi, Vietnam

    January 2, 2024 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We booked onto the midafternoon slot for this busy performance, which had traditional instruments being played over the puppet show. There was elaborate dances, and skillfully played out scenes with various puppets. The use of water was a really interesting natural element to add, that was used in various ways to really enhance the show.Read more

  • St. Joseph Cathedral, Hanoi, Vietnam

    January 2, 2024 in Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Our last evening in Hanoi we wandered an area of the city we had managed to miss, seeking out the huge cathedral. It was a dominating sight in contrasting tones, with a Christmas scene at the front. We managed to leave just as scores of school children arrived, presumably to enjoy the festive atmosphere.Read more

  • APOPO, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 5, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

After a solemn start to the morning we decided on something that had a more positive light. It was another depressing start though, learning about the various different bombs which are still found within Cambodia and the amount of people affected by them but great to then see a very clever way of finding the bombs using African giant pouch rats.

The clever animals can be taught to identify a miniscule amount of TNT within a one meter radius of them, and also a meter underground, so they can clear an area of a tennis court in around 30 minutes.

We got a demonstration and a chance to hold one too, which was great!

The company currently has 53 rats in Cambodia, with more being used in 10 other countries to find bombs and also tuberculosis.

  • Botanical Garden, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 5, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

As we were in the area we decided to have a wander around the Botanical garden to decompress, and found a nice space to have a walk. Didn't expect to also see so many animals too! Luke made friends with a monkey, pretty sure I was chatted up by a peacock, and we successfully avoided the ostriches (always surprised by just how big they are!).Read more

  • Angkor National Museum,Siem Reap,Cambodi

    January 6, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Fantastic musuem that we visited in preparation for Angkor Wat, and surrounding areas. Lots of amazing artifacts and useful information - there was references to Wat Phou and My Son that we visited in Laos and Vietnam too. It seems our journey so far really has been working up to visiting Angkor Wat!Read more

  • Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

No introduction necessary, Angkor Wat was absolutely stunning. Huge site, with fantastic details remaining. We were lucky enough to be able to visit twice, and found some quiet places to explore both times. Galleries with carvings were really interesting to look at, especially that we could understand more of the scene with the knowledge from the museum.Read more

  • Ta Prohm, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

This is known as the pretty temple and great for photos due to the amount of massive trees growing in and around the structures. It did mean there were far more people here 'doing it for the gram', but we managed to find pockets of quiet still. It really was a beautiful location too, so we can understand the draw.Read more

  • Don Mao, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

A really small temple which was mostly in ruin, Luke found this on Google maps and we quickly walked there after exploring a temple opposite. It was interesting to see the state that most of the temples had been restored from.Read more

  • Bayon Temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

This temple is most famous for the huge amount of heads carved into the building - it seems there's one everywhere you look!

We arrived at this temple late on the first day of exploring, and I was already exhausted from the heat. You could spend a lot more time here but unfortunately we just wandered, purposefully got a bit lost, imagined we were in tomb raider, and then descended to the next temple.

We drove by quite a few times again and got to admire the massive temple, and also revisited quickly on our last day in Siem Reap before the sun set.

  • Baphuon, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

This was another of the final temples on the first day, unfortunately I didn't feel well enough to go up it then but we revisited for a magnificent sunset on our final day.

It had a long causeway leading up to it, with columns along the side, which made it look very different to surrounding temples and very impressive.Read more

  • Terrace of the Elephants, Siem Reap

    January 8, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Originally we weren't very impressed with this terrace on our first visit as it had been mostly covered for an event (we believe). On revisiting we managing to see lots more of the elephants and appreciated the intricate carvings along the side.Read more

  • Prasat Preah Khan, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 9, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A larger temple that is famous for having a double story building - still under debate was this was used for though. Really fun to explore as it hasn't been restored fully, but you can still see detailed carvings. There's also massive garuda's near the gates - an easy to spot creature with his signature fighting pose!Read more

  • Neak Poan, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 9, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Another of my favourites, this unusual temple had a large reservoir surrounding it so you walked over a low bridge to get there. Within the reservoir you could see long thin fish swimming, lotus's floating on top, and dragonflies dancing around.

The temple was situated in the middle of a lake, and in front was a half circular structure that made it an oval shape within the water.

  • East Mebon, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 9, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

A rather large temple, and one I decided to leave Luke to climb as I took photos of some beautiful butterflies. We met up at the shady side and sat on one of the steps for an enjoyable break

  • Banteay Samré, Siem Reap, Cambodia

    January 9, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 34 °C

Another fantastic temple, this one was in such great condition that you could explore buildings and walk around the perimeter pretty easily. It was almost entirely empty too, which was surprising but enjoyable. Somehow we also got a tour from a tourist policeman that was really interesting - and we got to show off some of our knowledge that we had picked up too!Read more
