  • Patuxai, Vientiane, Laos

    November 17, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Laos' version of the arc de triomphe, it was a walk away from our accommodation but worth it. Nice water features in front and we found a shaded spot to have a relax too. Made with money provided by the US for a new airport, so nicknamed the vertical runway!Read more

  • COPE Visitor Centre, Vientiane, Laos

    November 17, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

After seeing some beautiful sites around Laos visiting COPE really brought us back to the reality for this stunning country.

Still dealing with the aftermath of US bombings during the Vietnam war, and still holding the title of most bombed country in the world per capita.

From 1964 to 1973, the U.S. dropped more than 2.5M tons of ordnance on Laos during 580,000 bombings —equal to a planeload of bombs every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for NINE years.

Up to a third of the bombs dropped, around 80 million, did not explode.

Over 5 decades on, less than 10% of these munitions have been destroyed.

  • Buddha Park, Vientiane, Laos

    November 18, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

A curious site, with a mixture of Hindu and Buddhist images interwined around beautiful flowers. You could crawl through a creature's mouth and wind your way up the stairs to reach 'heaven' (the view point at the top).

Health and safety inspectors have definitely not been here, as I'm surprised both Luke and I managed to avoid falling from heaven, or losing our footing on the non existent steps!

  • Wat Phou Salao, Pakse, Laos

    November 20, 2023 in Laos ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Large Buddha and temple at the top of a mountain, roughly 550 steps. Outstanding views from the top, with a stunning sunset cut short by the insects feasting on us. Fun tuk tuk ride took us back to the city too!Read more

  • Prasak Hong Nang Sida, Chamapasak, Laos

    November 21, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

After enjoying Wat Phou we took the chance to see a less touristy site of Prasat Hong Nang Sida, a temple which is being reconstructed currently.

The sun was just about to set, and as we admired (tuk tuk driver included) two children played with a wheelbarrow close by.

The site was closed and we had to be ushered out, and then sped down the champasak roads back to the guesthouse.

  • Champasak, Laos

    Nov 21–23, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Such a cute village, beautifully quiet and serene while being a perfect base to visit Wat Phou it is definitely worth a visit in its own right.

  • Tad Gneuang, Bolaven Plateau, Laos

    November 24, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Two very high waterfalls, with ziplines across for a better view (which we decided not to do). Area was lovely and quiet with a dogs wandering.

  • Tad Fane, Bolaven Plateau, Laos

    November 24, 2023 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Amazing waterfalls, starts with a mostly level area as the river runs through with bridges to walk over, grassy areas to sit, and trees to shelter. Walk down to the bottom to reveal a huge waterfall, and climb down the steps to be splashed with cascading water.

    Favourite one yet!

  • Hoi An Ancient Town, Vietnam

    Nov 30–Dec 7, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

  • My Son Sanctuary, Vietnam

    December 6, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

My Son was a really interesting site to visit as it's closely linked to Wat Phou in Laos that we visited too. The location was very similar, deep in the jungle, and although condition wasn't as good (due to American bombings as it was used a vietcong headquarters) there was obvious similar architectural styles and religious imagery. Many of the carvings that were well preserved had been taken to Da Nong during French rule and placed in the sculpture museum that we visited previously too - although a shame not to see them as a complete whole at least we got to view them.

'My Son' means beautiful mountain, which it really was.

  • Imperial city, Hue, Vietnam

    December 9, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

The Imperial City had MAGNIFICENT gates ♥️ and a stunning garden to relax in. We had a lovely morning stroll taking in the sites.

We saw some unusual birds while relaxing at the side of a pond, and witnessed a long horned beetle flying towards us too.

Although not quite what we expected, as much of the buildings had been restored recently, it was still enjoyable.

  • Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue, Vietnam

    December 9, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Pagodas are quickly becoming one of my favourite places to visit; the locations are always spectacular, the gardens and shrines serene to wander around, surrounded by beautiful buildings, and free as well!

Thien Mu Pagoda was extra poignant as it also housed the car that Thích Quảng Đức drove to the scene of his famous protest in 1963 when he burned himself to death in Saigon - also immediately becoming an iconic image, and sparking a turning point in history.
