    Basilica Notre Dame Fourviere

    25 september 2019, Frankrijk ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Lyon may not have the seven hills of Rome, but it's hills still play an important role in its settlement due to the the various conflicts to control them. Together with the confluence of two major rivers, the Rhone and the Soane they have given Lyon a long and sometimes bumpy history. At least they provide a funicular to get us up the hills for a look around.
At the top of this hill is an area called Fourviere. And what do you put on top of a hill? A basilica of course. This one was built after the Prussians had been at the gates threatening to take the the town. The people promised that if the city were spared they would build a great basilica - it was and they did.
