  • The Maldon Hunt

    1 januari 2019, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

Watching the New Year's Day Maldon Hunt.

Fantastic to watch and no fox meant no protesters (either that or the protesters had overdone the lentil soup on New Year's Eve and couldn't get out of bed).

  • The Colosseum

    4 januari 2019, Italië ⋅ ☀️ 3 °C

This place is 2773 years old but partially rebuilt in the 1800s. As you can tell from the age it is only slightly older than some of our family members although we can't make them fight with swords and lions anymore.

Anyway brilliant morning although if I get offered one more high five from a street seller wanting to either a) sell me a Colosseum trinket for 1 Euro or b) look for an opportunity to pick my pocket I will go postal.

  • Making Pasta

    6 januari 2019, Italië ⋅ 🌙 1 °C

Went to pasta making class where we made fettuccine and ravioli. Great fun and fantastic food. We ate our product and washed it down with prosecco and red wine.

There were people from several different countries (USA, Costa Rica and NZ) and we had a great time with our Italian hosts.

What follows is the step by step results.

P.S. will be buying pasta machine when I get home.

  • Arrival in Venice

    7 januari 2019, Italië ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

Three and a half hour train ride from Rome to Venice then a half hour ferry ride and five minute walk to hotel.

Breakfast had been fairly early given the time we had to catch train so very hungry by the time we checked in.

Found delightful little restaurant only a few steps from hotel and after a fantastic lunch the owner gave us complimentary limoncello - awesome way to finish off lunch.

Strolled round the alleys and what follows are a few photos including from inside the restaurant.

  • The Doge's Palace

    9 januari 2019, Engeland ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

This place is simply amazing. It was the seat of the Council of 10 (CX) which looked after the political and financial affairs of Venice.

At one time Venice was the richest city state in the world controlling the salt trade and acting as middlemen for so much commerce

It also is home to the famous Bridge of Sighs so called because walking across this bridge to the prison was the last view that prisoners had of the outside world before being locked away.
