    Geneva

    8 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

And so it begins, John and I have arrived into Geneva where we will be for a couple of days before we join our cycling tour. The plane trip was long but it is beautiful here, lovely sunny day. We strolled around the lake foreshore, stopping for a beer or 2 and to soak up the ambiance and look at Mt Blanc peering back at us over the nearby hills. Enjoyed a lovely dinner just up the road from where we are staying. Wendy and Sharon will be pretty happy when they. Arrive next week, our accommodation is smack bang in the middle of a very fancy shopping strip.Baca lagi

  • Geneva day 2

    9 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Well that was interesting! Had some drinks in a bar nearby and they were quite good. We then wandered up to a restaurant near where we were staying to have dinner, waiter gave the impression that he spoke and understood English and the menu was also in English, we were wrong. 2 glasses of wine turned into a bottle, I ordered a veal steak. Came out as a small roll of veal stuffed with spinach on a potato pancake with fries. John had risotto. The food was lovely just a bit weird looking. We had a good day, went wandering this morning and saw some of Geneva's sights, including the reformation wall. This signified the time that the Christian church divided into Protestant and Catholics. The wall contained the Mayflower edict, that people could choose their religion and the bill of rights from the 16th century. Then after lunch hired a couple of bikes and rode around the lake for a couple of hours. Odd things seen today a couple of brightly coloured cows and an unusual way to use designer jeans. Off to the French alps tomorrow.Baca lagi

  • Albertville, we're in the Alps!!!

    10 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Slow morning killing a bit of time while we waited for our pickup to the Alps. Wandered around the old town of Geneva and along the waterfront. Saw this door and above the door there was a sign saying Rue de Pugitory, I guess that's where you go if you've been bad.Decided to Cath the bus to the airport to meet our tour, completely missed our bus stop and walked around the block to find another one. Once on the bus we realised that we had walked right past it. Drove down to Albertville in France home to the 1994 Winter Olympics and aren't the still trying to milk that! Got our bikes setup and went for a lovely little ride through the forest climbing for 10 kms, with a fast downhill return. Not the oldest or greyest in our group so that's good. Serious climbing starts tomorrow, wish me good luck.Baca lagi

  • Bourg St Maurice

    11 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Well here we are right in the middle of the French Alps surrounded by some of the biggest cycling climbs around. The day started well, I was up early and decided to go outside with the iPad and catch-up. Good in theory, ended up being locked out. Automatic door only lets you out at that time day. Luckily, one of the guides had gone for a run and let me in!!! Today was the start of riding the big hills and the weather was just magic clear skies and 30 degrees. There are a lot poms in the group and they did what they do best, complaining about how hot it was. Poor pasty things. Day started well, we all got stuck at the first set of traffic lights just 10 metres from the hotel! It was one of those that needed weight to activate it, a couple of bikes were just not heavy enough. Sorted we set of on a beautiful gentle climb towards Beaufort. 10 kms out a flat tire, bugger, went from in the first group to dead last then used too much energy trying to catch back up.John had waited in Beaufort and we commenced the climb. It was a beautiful climb and certainly challenging. Being Sunday there were an incredible amount of motor bikes on the climb, one lot of three decided to do monos past us, interesting. Stopped at Lac Roselend for lunch then up and over the top for an amazing and very technical decent down to our hotel. Very nice today, yesterday's was a bit fawlty towers. Tomorrow is a bigger climb. Need my rest.Baca lagi

  • Lanslevillard

    12 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

What a climb! The Col de L'seran is the highest paved road in Europe, coming in at about 2900 metres. The air was quite thin up there and at 50 kms of climbing I was pretty stuffed when I got to the top, but I did see my first marmot. Ran across the road and then sat up and watched me get my camera out and then ran away. John was on fire today and did not one but two big climbs adding theCol de Mt Cenis to the l'seran, well done. The downhill parts of today's ride were just amazing, goes a long way to ease the pain of getting to the top and we are very well supported by the Marmot crew. The hotel is rather interesting, Sign above the bar says English spoken, clearly only by the guests! We went over to the Tabac for a quiet beer just in time to see the local farmer taking his cows for a walk through the village. The lady in the bar happily told us all about in French, certainly entertaining. Tomorrow the is the biggy of the week the Col de Galibier. Wish me good luck!!!Baca lagi

    13 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

Well this was the big one, the Col de Galibier the beast of the Alps. It certainly lived up to it's name. Such a tough climb. I was completing spent by the time I got to the top! Thank goodness it was all downhill to our hotel and what a magnificent downhill it was. The day started well, we saw Hannibal and his elephant on the way but then we hit some roadworks, June is roadwork month in France! The guys gestured to us to walk along the railway line to pass it . Okay as long as the fast train doesn't pass! See photo below. Very tired luckily tomorrow is a shorter day and I should be able to recover a bit. Craziest thing I saw today 2 scateboarders riding down these seriously steep climbs! Absolutely crazy.Baca lagi

  • L'Alpe D'Huez

    14 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Well this is the one we have been waiting for, not the toughest or longest but certainly one of the most famous Tour de France climbs and it doesn't disappoint. It was a great ride today with a lovely decent to start the day and then up to the Alpe. It's a beautiful climb with picture postcard views around every bend and cyclists everywhere! John was on fire today this was the climb he wanted to do the most so he climbed it twice. Well done. Craziest thing I saw today a young girl roller skiing up the climb, it's a tough climb on a bike let alone on skis! Bit of retail therapy this afternoon stocking up on cycling gear then a restful afternoon. We have been very lucky with the weather with blue sky days everyday so far but we did get a thunderstorm this afternoon. Two more days of cycling to go with both days having big long climbs and then back to Geneva to meet Weno and Sharon and relax a little bit.Baca lagi

    15 Jun 2017, Perancis ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

We left Alpe du Huez this morning on what was called a balcony road, this is a road that is literally hanging off the edge of the mountain. Quite amazing! Anyway this road was called the Pas de la Confession and well it's made me feel like confessing so here goes, I confess I ride my bike too much. There I feel better already. Seriously though, this was a beautiful start to the day spectacular views, pretty villages and then an amazing downhill ride to the main climb of the day. The Col de la Croix de Fer which translates to mean the pass of the iron cross and there is a big stone plinth at the top that should have an iron cross on it but unfortunately it was recently vandalised. This climb was quite long at 31 kms but was a great climb all the same. Saw another mammot and had to wait at one point while the farmer gathered up his sheep. Great watching his dogs work the flock. This climb was followed by anther large climb today up the Col Du Mollard again beautiful climbing and amazing scenery and a huge downhill ride to the end of the ride. Phew made it in one piece! There is one more big day to go so I need my rest. Goodnight.Baca lagi

    16 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Well it has come to an end. This was the last cycling day of our trip and it was a great finale. We started the day going up a little climb called the Lacets de Montvernier which translates to the Laces of Montvernier and lace up the mountain they did. Short but amazing, see photo below. We then moved on to the Col de Chaussy, a lovely climb with a fantastic decent. Then onto the main climb of the day which was the Col de la Madeleine a famous Tour de France climb and a brute of a climb, making you work right till the last metre! It was tough and hard work but the views from the top were amazing. We have had a great week of climbing and downhills but my muscles need a rest. Strangest thing seen today, a giant pinecone!!! Of to Geneva tomorrow to meet up with Wendy and Sharon and onto our next adventures, yippee!!!Baca lagi

It was transition day today, John and I had finished our cycling tour and Wendy and Sharon were arriving into Geneva today. We packed up in Albertville and headed to Geneva airport, arriving about 1.5 hours before the girls. We were all together by about two pm then headed to the hotel and then out for a bit of lunch. Quite afternoon catching up and looking around. We had a lovely dinner out under the trees at a nearby restaurant, great creme brûlée, and then an early night as we were all pretty tired.Baca lagi

    19 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Well here we are, last morning in Geneva. Didn't get a chance to write last night so this it...a day late. If we were able to order up the weather what we're getting is pretty much spot on. Not a cloud in the sky, nice gentle breeze, 28 degrees. Can't say that Geneva is special enough that I'd come back...we walked a fair bit of it yesterday...it is pretty by the lake, easy enough to get around but not a whole lot to see. We started yesterday struggling to find somewhere open for breakfast.Sunday means everything is closed. Only cafes were open, but then quite late. A lot of tourists were wandering around a little aimlessly. We did stop in at the local church that had impressive archeological site excavated underneath it. After mid day drinks by the waters edge we found a great Thai restaurant for lunch and then headed out to the Untied Nations for a look. It turned out to be a bit further out than we thought, caught a tram half way, and to be honest a little underwhelming when we got there. I think we probably spent all of 15 minutes there before jumping on the tram again. You can't actually get close up to the building, security gates all locked and cameras on. Maybe it's a Sunday thing? There is a plaza out the front with water jets spraying and a large 3 legged chair sculpture. Ended the day with drinks and dinner in a restaurant precinct quite near us.
Today we leave Geneva. We have to go back to the airport to pick up the car and then we head to Zermatt, a town in the Swiss alps, apparently close to the Matterhorn. We can't take the car into town, we catch a train up. We're spending 2 nights there on our way to Lake Como for a week. If this weather holds it'll be spectacular. Challenge for today: find a pharmacy that will sell me something for my head cold

  • Zermatt

    19 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Well, now I really feel like I'm on holiday...I am sitting on a hotel terrace in the Swiss Alps, its 35 degrees, I'm looking across at the Matterhorn while I'm waiting for my G&T. Seriously, does it get any better? We arrived by train from Tasch, having left the car there, as there are no cars in Zermatt. Zermatt is predominately an alpine ski village sitting at about 1700 metres. It is really very spectacular country. While I'm sitting here there are hang gliders all around us. Our hotel is one of the highest in the village and has an underground lift to get to the village, avoiding a pretty steep climb. This is where our day ended. It started in Geneva with us picking up the car up at the airport, a fairly trouble free process. We were collected by the Peugeot rep and taken to there depot to get the car and along the way there was a minor road range incident between our driver another who decided to just stop driving. There was much aggressive shouting in French ending with our driver uttering the only words we could understand...fucking idiot. I feel I am pretty well accustomed to this European driving now. It took all of about 5 minutes to get the brain switch happening from left to right. It was however a reasonably "big" first day of driving...about 230k's. We stopped for lunch at Martigny and had a quick look at some roman ruins before driving on.
Dinner tonight at the hotel restaurant was interesting. We were shown to our table and told that the kitchen stove wasn't working and that we could have chicken or chicken, or anything else on the menu that was cold. We had chicken.

  • Zermatt

    20 Jun 2017, Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Our last day in this glorious place, we check out tomorrow to head to our next stop - Lake Como for a week. The weather continues it's stellar performance of European Summer. Today was a carbon copy of yesterday - perfect blue skies, 30 degrees. We headed up into the mountains today on a fernicular cog train (I'm certain that'll mean something to someone). It was quite a trip. Beautiful alpine scenery the whole way - meadows to conifer forest to above the snow line rock and scree slopes. The views from the top were certainly impressive judging by the number of selfie sticks in operation.

I'm sitting in our room typing this and have the door open to our balcony ....this is not a lie....someone is playing a piano accordion. Could anything say "Swiss mountains" more than that? Maybe an encore performance by Julie Andrews in her apron eating chocolate. The tourist shops here are a heady combination of walking boots, chocolate and red cows bells. We used our hotel's lift to its short-cut underground tunnel to the village today. I'm glad I'm mostly desensitised to tunnels now.

Spent the afternoon wandering around the old town of Zermatt waiting to go to my doctors appointment - feeling sicker by the day. The old town is quite interesting - buildings preserved that were built in the 1600's. Getting sick in Switzerland puts a really hard hit on the wallet. Have just spent over $200 seeing a doctor and getting drugs to fix my sinus and chest infection. I think Roger is secretly enjoying it - I can barely talk.

About to go to our hotels outdoor terrace bar for drinks while savouring the views of the Matterhorn. Am looking forward to the change of scenery tomorrow - Swiss mountains and lake to Italian mountains and lake......I'm sure the gin'll be the same. Won't miss the knee slappin' sound of that accordion.

    22 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

What a difference two days makes. We left Zermatt the same way we arrived, by train. On the way there we had our faces glued to the window, oohing and ahhing at every glimpse of the Matterhorn. On the way out, I don't think we looked out the window once. Ready for the next adventure. It was a big day's driving, over 300k's to get us here. We took some time at the station to try and rearrange the luggage so that the back seat passengers weren't squashed up with a suit case as they had been on the way to Switzerland. After much jiggling and creative puzzle solving we managed to make it all fit in the back.
The drive took us over the Swiss Alps, mainly on freeway, with two border crossings. We got through without a hitch but every truck was stopped causing a few delays. All things considered, the GPS served us well today - there were a couple of moments where road conditions or design had changed and it took us a wrong way. But with Roge on the trusty iPad using maps we got ourselves right.
We stopped at the very beautiful Lake Maggiore for lunch - John and Sharon's first glimpse of the this beautiful region. We stopped at a restaurant right by the waters edge had a great lunch watching the local wildlife and their baby's paddle by. Two lots of ducks, one with 11 eleven ducklings and swans and signets.
We are staying in two separate apartments in the same building at Bellano - a smallish but nice village that has everything we need, bu most importantly we have a parking spot! This is almost unheard of around the lakes because of the steepness of the so close to the water. We are lucky that Bellano is reasonably flat for a distance from the edge of the of the lake. Both of the apartments face the lake.
I am sitting on our verandah watching the first ferry of the day go by...we are quite close to a small ferry terminal - it's within walking distance, I can see it from where I am sitting. The weather continues to be perfect and today we plan on getting a ferry timetable and start to do some lake exploring.

  • Lake Como, day 3.

    23 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

You really know you're in Italy when you need 3 different adapters joined together, balanced precariously on the lid of a small bin to make the connection just right to get the charge going into the phone.....not to mention the dodgy internet connection.

Today we're having a leisurely start to the day and taking the 11am fast ferry into Como for the day. Yesterday for our first day after arriving we decided to explore by ferry. We are located quite close to the Bellano ferry terminal so we have no need to get the car out. We decide to go across the lake to Menaggio, then to Bellagio, and back to Bellano. The weather continues to be quite hot, mid 30's each day threatening thunderstorms in the evening. These conditions mean that we really have to find a nice bar or cafe with lake views at every stop for a refreshing drink. Luckily there are plenty of such places and Menaggio was no exception. The little tourist info office provided us with a map of a small walking tour around the town. Highlights being the place where Mussolini was shot. Apparently this town was the bolt hole for wealthy Milanese during the war and also a hidey hole for the resistance.
From Menaggio across the Lake to Bellagio, ready for lunch now. It's going to take a day or two to get the ferry timetable right. Not too many ferrys come up the lake to Bellano so by the time we finished lunch we had to get back on the ferry or wait until the next one at 6pm. We'll have to come back and wander Bellagio on another day. What a hardship. Lunch was great, a nice restaurant right on the waters edge, enjoying the pasta! Back at our apartments Roger wandered up the road to one of the very few beaches for a swim.
We can see a restaurant from our balcony that is only open at night and is quite busy. We went there for dinner last night had a great meal. The prices are so good after Switzerland. What an expensive place that is...last nights meal cost $35 per couple, pizza's, mussels, wine beers, in Switzerland we were paying well over $100 per couple for our meals.

    24 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Today we decided to head into Como. A bit of retail therapy and to look at the large impressive Villa Omo. Where we are at Bellano we don't have the number of ferries that the 3 primary ports get so the earliest ferry into Como left Bellano at 11.15, getting us into Como at 12. Same situation for the return journey, either catch the 4 pm ferry back or the 7pm. Turns out we weren't going to be done in time to catch the earlier one so stayed on til evening. Another hot day so walking to the Villa didn't seem far but proved to be quite sweat-inducing!!! Along the way we passed several other Villas - all apparently vacant having been purchased by the local administration back in the 1950's and now don't seem to be occupied or used for anything. We finally made to the Villa only to discover it's only opened on Saturdays. Damn. Back we walk into town. God, its hot. We find an air conditioned bar and for once none of us order anything alcoholic. It was home made lemonade with mint to cool us down. Spent a bit of time wandering the shops, of course who could pass up the opportunity for Italian shoes? Not us. We found a bar with a good gin menu, spent a bit of time there, then moved two down where they had good bar food. Funnily enough the hours til 7pm went quite quickly.Baca lagi

  • Italy, Lake Como

    25 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

There is no umbrella. I have checked every nook and cranny in our apartment (there aren't many) so it looks like we're just going to have run for it today. I know that like an old person I keep commenting on the weather, but it has been really bloody hot. I was starting to think that it was just that we didn't have time to acclimatise but we know what hot days are like. We're having 2-3 showers a day just to cool down. Is it that we've gone soft from having air con everywhere? Domestic aircon in Italy is pretty much nonexistent. It doesn't really cool down at all until the sun sets behind the mountains on the other side of the lake, about 9pm. Last night the threatened thunderstorms finally hit. This morning I can't see across to the other side of the lake, those big mountains make for a pretty ferocious storm. Maybe it won't be quite so hot today. Now, to yesterday. We decided to jump in the car and head north (actually I have no idea if it is north. It is the opposite direction to that in which we usually go though) to a town called Colico. Colico is much closer to the really big mountains we can see from Bellano and at the top end of Lake Como. In fact you can drive around to the other side of the lake this way. John had been recommended a small local restaurant in an out of the way place to eat so we decided to head to that for lunch and see a few other sites while in the vicinity. The cafe for lunch was pretty good, if a bit tricky. It was down a small dead end lane sandwiched between a river and the rock wall of mountains. From my poor translation of signage in Italian it seems that there are grottos in the mountain that lead to a glacier under the mountain and there are places where very cool air is released. There was one next to the cafe. Very pleasant. We were the only non Europeans there and it was a extremely busy, we waited for an hour for a table and weren't disappointed. The food wasn't fancy by any means but was simple good home style Italian food. Yum. I think I could be converted to polenta. We stopped at monastry in Piona that we had thought we might like to see last time we were here but just didn't get to it. Up a few narrow windy roads to get there, worth the visit. A lovely cloister. Next stop an old fort: Forte Fuente. Who knew the Spaniard's were once in Italy? This fort was apparently built back in the Beginning of the 1600's, there's not a whole lot left to see since Napoleon gave it the once over but it was built to stop the Protestants from coming across the mountains from what is Switzerland today, and corrupting the Catholics of Spain / Italy. We had an unusual guide for this visit. A tabby met us in the car park at the bottom of the hill and walked with us all the way to the top of the hill where the fort is located.Baca lagi

    26 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Yesterday was a great day. We managed to fit quite a bit and still not feel like we'd over done it. The weather after the storm was perfect (I've decided to stick with the regular weather theme. Have just read that the western Europe heat wave is on its way to Eastern Europe. Can't wait.) took the car yesterday and used the car ferries to cross the lake to explore. First stop, on our side, Verenna and Villa Monestreo. We visited last time we were here and it really is too good to pass up for a second visit. Perched right on the edge of the lake the gardens are spectacular. Thin wedge that spread from the Villa along the lake shore. I'll let the pictures tell the story on this one. From the Villa we went down to toward to the waterfront through the Sunday market, stocked up in bread, strawberries and other fresh yummy stuff. Back in the car to the ferry for the crossing to Menaggio. From here our plan was to have lunch along the way to a visit to Villa Balbianello. Visiting this Villa was great choice (we are spoiled for choice). It is located on the top of a rocky mini peninsula that juts out into the lake. This fabulous Villa is quite famous having been used in movies such as Casino Royale where Daniel Craig is seen recuperating on the lawn, and Star Wars episode two. It has quite an interesting history having been original occupied by Franciscan monks who built the original church. It was then owned by the same family for over a century, changing Hands in the early 1930's to an American who used it as his summer house until the 1950's. at this time it was bought by an Italian man who can into immense wealth following the death of his father who had a supermarket chain. Business sold, Villa Balbianello bought. This man was an explorer and collector, the Villa filled with interesting relics that he had gathered along the way. He died relatively young in the 1980's and left the Villa to the Italian National Trust with enough money to ensue it's on going maintenance. Must have been plenty as they're still using that money today. A really very gorgeous place to visit. Can't imaging how spectacular it would have been to live there. We found a lovely little restaurant for lunch, great food, wine, ambience. What's not to like about sitting on the waters edge enjoying amazing views?Baca lagi

    27 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

It was a good thing we decided to eat in last night. We had bought some ham, cheese, olives etc to have for dinner as we'd had a pretty decent lunch in Bellagio. We'd settled ourselves on the balcony and we're watching a storm build down the lake from us and we watched it make its way up to us. We only just decided to move everything in side just in time. It was pretty ferocious and we had a bit of trouble closing the doors against the driving wind and rain. Now I know what those external shutters are for!
We decided to drive to Varenna and catch the ferry port there for the days exploring. Leaving from a bigger ferry terminal gives us more choices and we can stay out longer. We had decided to visit Castello Di Vezio and a 40 minute pretty steep walk saw us to the top of a small mountain where it is located above the township of Varenna. It was a defensive castle and not too much remains, some rampart, the tower, some impressive olive groves, but it is definitely worth the visit. The views from the top were spectacular, having uninterrupted views of the three arms of the lake. From here we took a different path down to the ferry terminal and crossed over to Bellagio. We spent the day there starting off with a short walking tour that led us to the point of the promontory that Bellagio sits on. Found. Great restaurant here where we had lunch that was away from the frenetic tourist activity that characterises Bellagio. We visited Villa Melzi after lunch, lots of lawn and more of a spring garden by the look of it. The rest of the day was spent wandering the steep little alleys that make up Bellagio and a little retail therapy.

  • Italy, Lake Como. Last day.

    28 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

A slow start to the day...the storms of last night continued into the morning and we had planned to just explore locally around Bellano today. Eventually got out of the apartment when the lightening and rain eased and walked into the village for a coffee. Bellano has a pretty impressive gorge which we had planned to see but weren't keen to walk up to given the weather conditions. Turns out that we stumbled across it as the best views of it were quite close to town. There is a very accessible boardwalk that runs along the side of it and after all of the rain we've had it was a pretty impressive sight. From there we wandered around the narrow little back alley ways of the village and discovered the most amazing little cake shop and several small little mini supermarkets, a deli and few other stores it would have been handy to know were there! Still don't know why we didn't explore the village earlier - could have been eating those cakes daily.....we stopped at a little cafe hidden away where the locals were eating for lunch. Had a great meal. This evening we drove into Varenna for drinks and dinner...perfect spot looking out over the lake. Looks like the umbrellas we bought are going to get a work out....Baca lagi

  • Italy, Udine.

    28 Jun 2017, Itali ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Today was check out day, and not surprisingly the massive storm that raged all night was still going this morning which made loading the car a bit tricky. Apparently this kind of weather is common in Lake Como at this time of year. This entry (and tomorrow's) are going to be short and boring. We are spending these two days driving to Vienna where we stop for 3 days. On leaving Lake Como we had hoped that once we cleared the mountains that form the "bowl" of the lake that we would be past the worst of the storms. That theory held true for a few hundred K's and I am now sitting in our hotel room in Udine listening to the thunder. It's not cold though. I drove about 440k's today to get here, all of it on autostrada, so not hard driving, just boring. The town of Udine is north of Venice and I wish I could tell you that it is a pretty river town, with lots of trees and gorgeous old buildings. Roger went for a walk through the old part of town and it actually looks quite interesting. We only here for the one night, same type of journey to get to our next stop tomorrow . The hotel we're staying in? Unremarkable, although, I'm always a little suss when I first open the door to the room and I am overpowered by the artificially floral smell of cheap air freshener.Baca lagi

  • Austria, Vienna.

    30 Jun 2017, Austria ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

The words make no sense to me at all. They are not even a little bit like words I know. We have arrived in Austria. As we crossed the border we were talking about the Terminator. First village sign we see is for Arnoldstein. Wonder if it's going to be a theme? The drive from Udine was really good, another 450k's but on freeways devoid of trucks! Yesterday's trip was solid trucks the whole way. The drive through the alps (and I mean through) was really quite pretty when we were not in a tunnel. We left early so arrived in Vienna in the early afternoon, checked into our hotel and did a bit of exploring. We are quite centrally located, about a ten minute walk from the museum quarter. This is a precinct of gorgeous old buildings holding a range of different museums forming a plaza that has cafes and bars around the edge. We went into the Leopold Museum to see a Klimt exhibition and got totally swept away by the Egon Schiele exhibition. Wow. Finished the day with our first authentic Austrian meal - of course, Roge had the schnitzel. Tomorrow we'll jump on the tourist bus and let it takes us around. We're only here for two full days (leaving Sunday) so we have have to pack in the sightseeing.Baca lagi

  • Austria, Vienna, day 2.

    1 Julai 2017, Austria ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Given that we've only got two full days in Vienna, we're trying to pack in as much as we can, and, as much as I hate to admit it, the hop on hop off tourist bus makes that a lot easier. We hopped on this morning and went out to the Schonbrunn Palace which is a little way out from where we are - certainly not walking distance. This is quite an expansive and interesting Palace set on about 400 hectares that has a lot of interesting features, including its own zoo - apparently the oldest zoo in the world, even has koalas. The Palace building was styled after Versailles in France and having visited there can say that it didn't quite make it, still very impressive nonetheless. We wandered the Palace rooms and caught a little tourist train around the grounds so that we could see more. We got off at the Gloriette, which is an impressive building on a hill towards the back of the place. We had lunch here and enjoyed an amazing view of Vienna from the top of the Gloriette and looking back toward the Palace. Back on the bus, we wanted to stop at the Belevdere Museum, another beautiful big old building (not quite sure of it's history) that now houses a number of exhibition spaces. Vienna's permanent Klimt exhibition is in this building and this was on my list of things to see. Not disappointed. Back in the bus, hopped off at the Museum Quartier for drinks. We walked back to our hotel and ate at a great restaurant recommended by the hotel. Viennese food is really good, it heavy, I'm not sureI could eat it all the time. Roge is getting right into, he had the Goulash last night.Baca lagi

Left Vienna bright and early for our journey to Prague. It was a pleasure driving through the city at 8.30 on a Sunday morning. We hit the autostrada and that was we stayed for the next 350 or so k's. Most of the driving was in the Czech Republic, we knew when we had reached the boarder as there were Casino's (not quite Vegas!), sex shops and a biker bar. Couldn't be further from Vienna if we'd tried!!! The driving was pretty horrendous, it would have to be the worst road surface I have ever driven on. A concrete panel road surface in really poor condition with road works for much of it, with rain for some of it. We arrived in Prague early afternoon and for those of you that know Prague our hotel was on the main square right opposite the astronomical clock. This is of course a huge pedestrian plaza that is incredibly busy. This small piece of detail was not known to our GPS. I ended driving driving right through this space, and had a very nice tour guide stop to tell me to drive out as quickly as possible before the police came. Managed to do just that, parked illegally and walked back to the hotel. I do all of the driving on our trips, Rogers not interested and I don't mind it. Once we had checked in, the Hotel staff went back to the car with Roge to move it to the hotel car park. Both Roger and I expected that that hotel, guy would drive. Not so. Roger had his very first European driving experience in Prague central. Needless to say he needed a drink. We had booked a private walking tour before leaving Vienna and we met our guide at 4pm for a 3 tour. Best money ever spent. Our guide was an amazing young American woman living and studying in Prague for the last five years - her speciality - Eastern European politics. This woman showed us and taught us things we would have had no idea about if we'd been on our own. At the beginning I was thinking that 3 hours might be too long but it sped by. We now thinking we'll see if we can do the same thing at our next two stops, Berlin and Amsterdam. She recommended a great place for dinner and that was where we finished the night, with Roge having the local speciality of Pork knuckle.Baca lagi

We're really loving this place. It has such a rich an interesting history and is quite a vibrant place - very different to Vienna which was lovely but nowhere near as vibrant as Prague. I find most of the buildings in Prague a little bleak, there is none of the wild decorative work that you see on other buildings in European cities. I had desperately wanted to visit the Klementinum, a very baroque library (which I discovered is now closed to the public) but could easily have walked right past this building - very plain on the outside considering what it houses on the inside (if you don't know it it's worth the look on google images). Our tour guide of the day before had recommended we get to the main bridge that crosses the Vitava River well before the crowds at 8am, so this is what we did before breakfast. The bridge leads away from the old town (where we are staying, right opposite from the astronomical clock) to the "new" town on the other side where the Prague Castle sits. Compared to what the bridge was like when we crossed back late in the day it was a good plan. After breakfast we went across the bridge again to the Castle. We spent a few hours here talking around with the crowds. It is quite a big site and it is a little limited to parts you can go into, but very interesting anyway. From here we went further up the hill to the Strahov Monastery where there is a baroque library, quite small, but it was the consolation prize for not getting into the Klementium. The monks also have a brewery here, pretty popular, so we joined the crowds and had a few beers. That ended our day sight seeing....dinner in a restaurant just off the town square - lovelyBaca lagi
