    Apologies for lack of posts. Been issues with being able to charge and coverage.
    We ended up staying in Les Brenets for an extra day. Had a lovely bbq with Armon, Chloe, Alex Julian. My Spanish selection for the wine didn't pass. Told it was shit😄. Weather was budget and supermarket closed so couldn't resupply. Also keen for Alan to catch us; hence the extra day.
    Set off on the Monday with camping by the river with Chloé from Belgium Monday night. 800m climb tomorrow.    Les mer

    Our refuge last night

    Interesting time last night. Thought we would stay in accommodation so we could shower and charge devices.
    Made two mistakes. Didn't ask the price or inspect the facilities.
    No shower. No power for charging. 35 Swiss francs per person with breakfast so @$60. And all in cash.
    Nice dinner though and met a lovely Danish couple. Michael and Christine. Also doing the Hexatrek. Unfortunately Michael had hurt himself so they stopped today.

    Wednesday afternoon

    Weather improved this afternoon. After a beer at 4 pm, a steep climb with views over Lac Lac Leman.
    We were going to camp down low but stopped at 7 pm to camp. Hope to get a sunrise tomorrow morning.
    Lots of old bunkers and walls to stop tanks this afternoon.    Les mer

    Mont Tendre

    Big day today. Passed 30km for the day including some big elevation metres.
    Currently camping on the highest point of Swiss Jura. Magnificent views of Alps and Mont Blanc. Beautiful but intimidating.
    Started at 6.30am after underwhelming sunrise. 2 coffee stops and 4 and 12km. Banked on a restaurant marked at @25km. Just a farm house. never been a restaurant so disappointing.
    Made up for it just now with magnificent dinner at mountain cafe. now camping near by.
    And more ticks sadly.

    Lake Leman

    Well we have finished the first leg. Made it to Lake Leman about 4pm. Nice walk up to radar site and then very hot walk through to the lake.
    Claudia and Pierre-Yves very kindly picked us up. Had a lovely evening with them last night at their house in Fechy.
    Day off today and boat back to France tomorrow. 670km down and, hopefully, fit enough for the Alps. They certainly look intimidating.    Les mer

    We have had a lovely couple of days with Pierre-Yves and Claudia. They were incredibly kind. Evenings were a bit dangerous as Pierre-Yves is a very generous host.
    Hopefully we can return the favor soon.

    Nice trip over on ferry. Very hot at 34 degrees.
    Pierre-Yves and Claudia very kindly gave us some beautiful wine to carry. Unfortunately we decided weight was an issue so we had to drink tonight.
    Also got a haircut to keep Duncan happy.
    Big hills ahead so Allen might power ahead. Time is starting to feel precious.    Les mer

    The Alps. Day 1

    Left Thonon just after 6am. beautiful city but very hot. 25km today with 1200m elevation.
    Managed to hang with Allen until 3pm. Heat and elevation slowed us up a bit.
    Currently holed up with a lurking thunderstorm. Even hail. pulled the pin once we found a camp. Good spot but sharing with some cows.
    hopefully Allen finds a good site in time. He might be more exposed.
    Great villages and scenery. Heat the biggest issue. At least 34.    Les mer

    I'm in a Farmers barn just down from Mt Baron. Looks like it could be significant weather so thought it better to find a place now to hunker down ...... Farmer is busy putting cows in stalls underneath. I'm in the barn above. See what the night & morning brings ...... never know how your day's going to finish up do ya 🙄

    Bit of a late start. Little sleep because of the storm. Tent survived.
    Started walking at 8. Saw were Allen slept. About lunchtime came around a corner and there is Allen sitting by lake. Never thought we would catch him.
    He had a noisy night with the cows.
    Storm came through at midday. Hail, lightning and thunder. Quite scary.
    More storms tonight so tried to get into refuge but full. Did a quick couple of hours to get lower into more sheltered area.

    Heading high

    Chance to restock and have a coffee at 8am in lovely in village
    Again very hot.
    Allen keen to get a move on so left us early. We saw him briefly at 3pm and 5pm. Only thing that slows him down is an opportunity for a beer😄.
    We camped near a refuge while Allen pushed on for an hour. Bivouac was very high. Some snow around and a freezing morning.    Les mer

    Along the border

    Very cold night. Tent almost frozen.
    Early climb and the a traverse along a high ridge. Ski lifts everywhere and lots of GR5 walkers. Quite nice as we a fitter than most of them so able to actually pass people.
    Allen has taken a high, more technical route so will hopefully get some great photos.    Les mer

    Change in plans

    Last night stealth camped in a forest. Had to try to hide the tent.
    Yesterday was very hot and lots of steep climbing. Consequently we decided to change our route and do 2 days on GR5. This would be 2 days shorter and allow for some extra recovery time.
    Pretty long day. Stopped at refuge at 5pm and then did a final climb to lovely lake and campsite.
    The terrain is certainly awe inspiring.    Les mer

    Long day to Chamonix

    Got up hoping to get some great sunrise photos to be greeted by cloud unfortunately.
    Walked up to a pass hoping it would clear to see what the guide said was one of the best views in the Alps. Selfie is the view spoilt by cloud and my face.
    We finally heard from Allen He is going well. Amazng scenery. He sent an incredible photo of an Ibex which i will include.
    He is 2 days behind us.
    Long decent and then 800 metres back up. Cable car to the top so lots of tourists. A bit overwhelming.
    Some technical stuff and then a really steep 1600 metre descend. Our knees were shattered as we finally staggered into Les Houches.    Les mer

    Chamonix

    Took the bus to Chamonix. Tour de France is here for a couple of days so teeming with people. Bit of a shock after all the solitude.
    Beautiful town in parts. Mountains around are spectacular. More English being spoken than French.
    Allen joins us this afternoon. He has the choice of a brutal downhill for 3 hours or the cable car. Does anyone want to place a bet? I will continue to send him beer photos as an enticement 😄

    Chamonix day 2.

    2pm and just waiting for Allen to come in. Beer waiting in fridge.
    Quite a warm muggy day. Feels like thunderstorm weather.
    Been a tourist this morning. Did like the look of the meringues.
    Also wondering about shouting Maree a paraglide for her birthday. See video.
    Again very crowded and lots of English being spoken.
    McDonald's very subtle. And icebreaker even here.    Les mer

    Had a great day with Allen. 2 days off for us. Thunderstorms in the night turned the river through Chamonix into a torrent.
    Out tonight to early celebrate his birthday before we hit the hills tomorrow. He has seen some amazing country but had some very dodgy places to negotiate. I'm glad we took an alternate.
    All stocked up as we make our way towards the 1000km mark.    Les mer
