    Rocks and Rolls

    April 2, 2023 in Guatemala

(it turns out I took essentially bugger all photos today as I left the phone in the hostel)

A welcome lie in - awaking at the leisurely hour of 7am - and a stunning hammock view set the tone for a relaxed day.

In the afternoon we floated away down the rubber dinghy rapids.* Well, most of us did, some people managed to float mostly headfirst while flailing helplessly after their tubes.

Cerveza and sunshine guided us across rocks, rapids and razor hot volleyball pitches until we drifted home to watch the sun set (presumably... It was cloudy... Who knows...)

The evening served pool challenges, hot tub class wars and an unexpected zesty smattering of petty crime. Full credit to the CSI Guatemala Gang for tracking, tracing and threatening their phones back into their hands after they were stolen.

Drinks, new friends, rages cage and a German man cornering me telling me all about his unexpected homosexual escapades in Mexico capped off this eclectic but excellent day.

Onto bed. Onto sunrise. Onto Antigua.

  • Caving and Bathing

    April 1, 2023 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Semuc Champey. Home to stunning natural limestone pools.

However going on a hostel tour means you have to earn your fun, so only after an hour of candlelit caving in with some stench water fairly shady safety etiquette; and a vertical climb did we get to go to the pools.

It didn't disappoint. Stunning pools. A great crowd and a truly exceptional guide made for a memorable day. Obviously I didn't take any photos, because I never do but somebody had a phone in the water so I've made a formal request for the snaps...

After a ride back to Zephyr in the cattle wagon it was time for sunset in the pool where a new old friend made a reappearance after an admirable two day bus based travelthon.

I don't have any photos of that either because we were to too busy drinking mosquito based cocktails.

I basically don't do photos and this is the wrong app for me.

  • Welcome to the jungle

    March 31, 2023 in Guatemala

I got a bus for ten hours today. That's it. That's the update.

Lou and Tristan also made an appearance (that will happen when you copy/paste and itinerary 😅) but the photo does make it look like Lou has agreed special dispensation for T to be released from his specialised caring regime.

As the sun set I had arrived at Zephyr lodge for an evening of great views, loud yorkshire men and pool.

Oh and pontoon. We went on a pontoon too.

  • Mr Tikal

    March 29, 2023 in Guatemala ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

... was my favourite Mr Men character/Thick of it episode so I think it's a great title even if you don't.

Having discovered that my dorm was next to the meeting point for the early morning expeditions (a 3AM) I was quite happy to be part for the 4:30AM group to visit Tikal.

Stunning. A vast cut above the ruins to date (Tulum, Chitzen) and still being excavated, I'm still slightly awestruck by not only the supremely sophisticated calendar system but also the buildings built with such clear purposes - to manipulate the sun, the people and to demonstrate power. Arguably politics hasn't changed much in the last 3000 years.

    Oh, and monkeys. Muchas monkeys.

Enjoyed the day with Marisa, my new (and fleeting, given she is heading south) solo traveller friend who, unlike all the other Dutch people I met, is German.

Went to enjoy the sublime sunset and bumped into my favourite sun bumpkins Tris and Lou - who careered sprinting around a corner as they continue to try and fit about 7 countries into far fewer weeks.

A few beers and some food later (no photos taken) while T and L continued their trademark flurry of organising tomorrow's adventures it was time to go to sleep....

... Only to be woken by the loud 3am expedition!
