    Gundagai

    A late start, filled up in West Gosford, homemade picnic at Partridge rest stop on the Hume Highway. Windy and sporadic rain heading south.
    Arrived Gundagai at 5pm, checked into our campsite on the Murrumbidgee River, set up camp and then walked into town for dinner at the Criterion Hotel.
    There were hundreds of very noisy white cockatoos in the large river gums and oak trees in the park as you can hear in the attached videos.    Read more

    Woke up to a cold but sunny morning - walked across the bridge overlooking our campground then drove back into town to walk the main street with its historic buildings, some from the 1850’s and newer art deco buildings built after Gundagai’s catastrophic flood in 1852 when the town was moved up the hill.
    Steady drive through to The Willows stopping at Wagga Wagga for lunch on the way.    Read more

    Burra is full of beautiful heritage buildings - the thing we love about SA is the stone buildings.
    Stayed at the small Burra caravan park right across Burra Creek from town, dinner at the Burra Hotel.
    Next morning we walked back into “town” for another explore.    Read more

    Ardrossan

    We headed south through what would normally be grain and legumes fields - the region is currently very dry and quite barren looking. We decided to stay in Ardrossan for two nights, the township sits above stunning red coastal cliffs where the coast meets rolling farmland. Ardrossan is a historic port popular for its fishing and beaches (most beaches on the eastern side are mud flats, so not great looking at low tide).Read more

    Marion Bay

    Marion Bay was our base to explore the Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park. The park is approximately 94 square kilometres and was established in 1970.

    There are lots of ports and long jetties on the peninsula due to its rich history of agriculture and shipping grain to local and overseas ports.

    Minlaton

    Minlaton was once known as the barley capital of the world, it is also famous for one of its past residents, Captain Harry Butler, a flying ace during WW1. His monoplane, the Red Devil, is on display and is the only one left in the world.

    In 1916 he became a Fighting Instructor in Scotland and Chief Fighting Instructor in the RFC North Yorkshire and trained over 2,700 pilots.

    Butler established the first airport and the first passenger flight business in South Australia.    Read more

    Road to Point Deberg

    Up early thanks to daylight saving finishing - overcast but a comfortable temperature. First stop Gyms Beach which is within the park but can only be accessed by the Corny Point Rd (looks like a nice quiet spot to bush camp).
    Next is Daly Head which is a popular surfing and fishing spot. Drove on to Gleesons Landing at the end of a very corrugated track, looks like another fishing spot. Picnic lunch at Pt Deberg.    Read more

    Road to Moonta

    Diverting off the Yorke Highway into Port Victoria, South Kilkerran and Maitland. Stocked up for the next few days in Maitland - lots of original stone buildings.

    Moonta

    In the northern region of Yorke Peninsula now and we spend one night at Moonta - large and rich deposits of copper were discovered at Moonta in 1861 by Patrick Ryan, a shepherd. The main mining operations continued until 1923, the region is now agricultural - barley wheat and legumes. Moonta is now a popular holiday town where the sandy coves, beaches, jetty and clear blue waters complete the idyllic panorama of Moonta Bay.Read more

    Mt Remarkable

    Camped at Mambray Creek in the National Park for 2 nights. We did the Mambray Creek trail up to sugargum lookout. Huge river gums in the camping area and many hollowed and burnt out ones along the walk. Hundreds of galahs and a few kangaroos here and we could hear the rangers shooting feral cats further up the ranges.Read more

    Port Augusta and Whyalla

    Topped up on our food provisions and searched for potable water which we eventually found down at the Whyalla jetty. After being told about Point Lowly further back up the road, we decided to go and check it out. A free camp area by the bay but very windy and exposed so headed back down south and stayed in Cowell for the night.Read more

    Cowell to Port Lincoln

    On the road and headed back to Lucky Bay where the car ferry takes you across the Spencer Gulf to Wallaroo. Lucky Bay looks like a holiday shack only ‘town’. We then headed inland to Ulbana Weir, back to Cowell’s silo art and then Port Gibbo.
    Picnic lunch at the foreshore in Arno Bay, then walked along the beach with piles of seaweed which was a bit stinky.
    Further south is Port Neill which has the obligatory jetty but a lot less weed. Port Neill seems almost deserted - no one walking around and the caravan park was practically empty.
    Lipson Cove has great bush camping sites right on the white sandy beach.
    Lastly into Tumby Bay which looks similar to Cowell except for the foreshore where there is a lot of erosion.
    Point Lincoln is home for the next 3 nights.    Read more

    Port Lincoln is the largest city in the west coast region with a population of approximately 27,000. The city is reputed to have the most millionaires per capita in Australia, as well as claiming to be Australia's "Seafood Capital".Read more
