After a quick shop in Bright we head back on to Great Alpine Road towards Mt Hotham but turn off about 10kms before MH on to the Dargo High Plains Road. A quick stop at Mt Freezeout where we had camped 2 years ago, and stopped for lunch about a kilometre further on.Read more

Mt Blue Rag Track

The Blue Rag Range Track is one of the Victorian High Country’s most iconic and spectacular tracks off the Dargo High Plains Road. This remote track offers epic climbs and descents that lead to the Blue Rag Range trig point. Its very steep and rocky in parts climbing to 1728m. This often hairy track is mainly narrow which limits places to pull over for oncoming vehicles to pass. Passed about a dozen cars, but once at the top we were on our own. The trip back was easier with no need to pull over for anyone.Read more

Kings Spur - overnight stop

Once back on the Dargo High Plains Road continued south then we turned off left to Kings Spur track which leads to Devils Hollow 10kms along. About 5 kms in we found an open grassed area for us to set up camp for the night.Read more

Lankey Plain Hut

200m east of the junction of the King Spur Track with the Dargo Road on Omeo Plain.

This hut was probably built by the Treasure family in about 1951, after they took over the lease from the Gow family, who held it from 1888.Read more

Dargo is known for its groves of century-old walnut trees that line the valley floor.
A quaint village with its 1898 pub, general store and church and a population of about 105. Although a minor gold rush was experienced in the mid 1800s, the town was primarily a resting place and later a supply town for miners on their way to the Grant, Talbotville and Crooked River goldfields nearby.
This was where I had to visit the bush nurse 20 years ago just to get some Zyrtec - it took 20 minutes to get a non prescription medication for hayfever!!Read more

Omeo

Long day of driving today, having to take the long way around to avoid the heatwave. We’ve decided to head up to Mt Hotham, but, we need a laundry so stopped at Omeo Holiday park on the Livingstone Creek and a cool breeze has picked up. Lovely park about 1 km from town.

Omeo is quite a pretty little town, the name is derived from an Aboriginal word for 'mountains' or 'hills'. Omeo is affectionately known as the City of the Alps with many historic buildings remaining in the town. The town is still the commercial hub for the Omeo Region, with a population of about 410.Read more

Love the lodges here all built to a similar style and colour palette.
Predominately a cross country skiing resort during winter and in summer there a many walking and horse riding trails.

Harrietville

Harrietville is a former gold-mining town, located 25 kilometres south of Bright on the Great Alpine Road and at the base of Mount Feathertop, with a population of about 488.

As it was very windy on the mountain and our favourite camping spot on Mt Freezeout had been taken we drove down to Harrietville (510m above sea level). The Harrietville Caravan Park is on the west branch of the Ovens River with shady trees to camp under. By about 5pm the forecasted rains came and the temperature dropped. In a short respite we walked to the nearby pub, but it was closed so back to camp and sheltered under our awning until the rain eased.Read more

Dropped back into Bright for brekkie at the Beechworth Bakery.
Lots of tourists still around but half the shops are closed. 🫤

Beechworth is a well-preserved historical town famous for its major growth during the gold rush days of the mid-1850s. Beechworth has a population of 3,290.
Walked around town, visits a couple of museums, the amazing sweet shop, and enjoyed a yummy pie for lunch.Read more

Yackandandah

One of Australia's prettiest villages with a centre classified by the national trust, Yackandandah is nestled in the foothills of Stanley State Forest another gold mining town.

Arrived around 2.30pm, set up camp and then walked the short distance into town. Stepped over original bluestone gutters to see the elaborate façades built during the nineteenth century gold rush.Read more

Keiwa River

After a bad night for me with hayfever we drove through the Keiwa Valley with its rural dairy farms of rolling green hills and the Victoria high country backdrop. We found a peaceful spot for lunch on the Keiwa River just over the Keegan Bridge.Read more

Stopped here for a late brekkie - recommend Nest Cafe whenever in Tumbarumba.
We then drove straight through to home by about 5.30pm.
