Port Arthur Penal Settlement

Well we had a big day today!! phew so tired, we visited the Port Arthur convict settlement, the guides are at pains to point out that this was not a settlement for the normal transported convicts! This was the place they sent the convicts that would not conform to rules that now applied to them, normally after they had been before the magistrate about 3 times for whatever crimes they were accused of they were sent to Van Diemans land port Arthur to be broken by using brutality to make them conform (but according to reports this generally didn’t work just made inmates worse) then they changed their methods to use isolation to break their spirits which drove them mad, so they built an asylum to house the nutters.
