Nagasaki and the Europeans

Nagasaki hat eine lang zurückreichende Geschichte mit Europäer:innen. Im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war die Hafenstadt ein wichtiger Knotenpunkt des interkontinentalen Handels und es dauerte entsprechend auch nicht lange, bis sich kulturelle Einflüsse, vor allem von Portugies:innen und Niederländer:innen auf die Stadt auswirkten. Am sichtbarsten sind diese Einflüsse heute noch in der Architektur Nagasakis in Form zahlreicher westlicher Gebäude und in Form von Kirchen, die als Gebetsort für das von den Portugies:innen importierte katholische Christentum dienen. Ich fand dieses für Japan sehr ungewöhnliche Stadtbild sehr ansprechend und eine gute Abwechslung. Es fühlte sich schon fast etwas heimisch an.

Nagasaki has a long history with Europeans. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the port city was an important hub for intercontinental trade, and it didn't take long for cultural influences, especially from the Portuguese and Dutch, to impact the city. These influences are still visible today in Nagasaki's architecture, with numerous Western-style buildings and churches that serve as places of worship for the Catholic Christianity imported by the Portuguese. I found this cityscape, so unusual for Japan, very appealing and a refreshing change. It almost felt a bit like home.Weiterlesen
