Ste-Croix Island International Historic

This is the landing place of the very first French colonists who, in 1604, attempted to establish a permanent French foothold on the continent. They built an entire village on the island. Unfortunately, during the first winter which was particularly harsh, 35 of their 79 members perished due to malnutrition and scurvy.
