  • Chilling at the airport

    June 10, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Waiting in the Starbucks to meet my travelling group. Just been thoroughly sniffed over by a Police Dog which was a novelty. Nothing to report. Thank goodness. That would kick the trip off well.

  • Guardian of the Backpacks

    June 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

I've found my forte. Backpack Meister. No-one will touch these packs whilst I'm in charge. I'm like a spider in a web. One touch of so much as a strap and I'll pounce.
Waiting for the train to León.

  • Leòn to San Martin del Camino

    June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

14 miles into Day One. I ordered a seafood salad but it isn't what I expected. At least it wasn't as outlandish as some of the other choices! Walking out of Leon was a bit industrial but soon developed into the lovely countryside I have been missing.Read more

  • The Way to Astorga

    June 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

What a day. So hard for everyone. A long distance and elevation too. The young people were having a tough time of it. The scenery was glorious. There was an incessant frog chorus to serenade us. We managed to get to Astorga eventually after being out for 11 hours. Long long day. We came across a wonderful oasis run by a man who loves to help the pilgrims. You could not imagine the variety on offer. Everything you could ever want. And all for a donation. So many lovely characters along the Camino.Read more

  • Quick break

    June 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Days are full of short breaks as we gradually wander our way along. Problems with lack of insoles, blisters, heavy packs etc. We are dealing with every problem as it comes. These pilgrims look a bit worse for wear though!Read more

  • El Ganso lunch break

    June 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Good day so far. Lovely albergue in Astorga. The rain has stopped and all looks rosier. The walking is better today for some reason. A bit cooler which definitely helps. The young people are doing well but some are struggling now. We've sent a pack ahead today which has helped. Very proud of them all.Read more

  • The End of a Long Day

    June 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

A long, long day in many senses. Twenty hot miles. Starting off with a treacherous descent for even the most skillful mountain goat. That was enough to trash the feet to start with. Tempers got frayed, boots disintegrated and there was a meltdown in Decathlon. But now at last we have finished for the day and there are smiles all round. 😁Read more

  • Lunch at Villafranca del Bierzo

    June 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

It's a long slow day. The pace is slow at the back. Mainly due to injury and also a too heavy pack. What can you say? We are all adults. You can advise but you can't make anyone do anything. We've arrived in Villafranca at last and now for a much needed break and more importantly - lunch!Read more

  • Casa Susi

    June 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Hooray to be here in this gorgeous albergue with single beds and a communal meal. The lovely hosts could not be nicer. We got caught in a terrible storm earlier and all our clothes are soaked. The wood fired burner is not going to make much difference alas.Read more

  • Quick break

    June 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We're still drying out from yesterday! Knee problems, blisters, sore feet, it's all par for the course. Shorter today today so hopefully chance to rest up. Scenery here in the mountains is lovely.

  • Staying at La Faba

    June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

I feel like my dry bags are mis-named. Everything in my pack feels slightly damp. Fortunately we are staying at an excellent albergue in La Faba and I have put everything possible on the line to dry in the sun. Today was short but tough as we climbed further up the mountain. It has been a beautiful walk and everyone is in good spirits. It is amazing how everyone has improved and how much we support each other as a team.Read more

  • O Cebreiro

    June 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Climbing high today to the highest point on the route. Alas one of our number has decided to go home. It can't be helped but it is sad and everyone is feeling it. My feet are so sore and I have developed a cough and a coldsore. My body is breaking down! Or protesting at the very least.
The views are spectacular. Everyone is working hard. Two new members arrived yesterday. Today is a tough intro for them. 😆

  • Quick break in Tricastela

    June 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Got a bad cough. It's driving me mad as I'm trying to suppress it. Very damp day. Beautiful villages and scenery. Feet are very sore. Blisters. One of our group left in a strop about having to obey rules. Then turned up again late last night. Seems the grass isn't always greener after all... And I don't suppose there are many other places to stay at this time of year when it is so popular here.Read more

  • Nighty night from Portomarin

    June 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

A good day today from Sarrìa. The Camino becomes very pretty and well kept. Rather a terrifying descent at the end though and a particularly eye wateringly scary bridge to cross. I have no head for heights and had to take some deep breaths. On the way we came across a lovely little donativo rest stop. The food was gorgeous and the flowers were such bright hues.Read more

  • Paradise at the Green Horse

    June 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Yay the day has improved considerably since I found out I was in a double room! Single bed. No bashing my bonce on the upper bunk. And today I had three ice creams. Talk about sugar rush. Maybe that's what I've been lacking all week. Another 17 miles today so my feet are singing like canaries. Oh to get rid of this cough too.Read more
