A queen of the trash pile!?

    Nothing to comment. Shit happens.

I remember when I was in a summer math & physics camp after my 9th grade we were staying in NSU dormitory. And beds were single beds with metal springs. Which were, of course, broken after so many years. So we would put doors (!!! because doors size was perfect for the single beds ) above the springs but under our thin mattresses so that your ass doesn't fall on the ground because of the lousy springs. So, in this room they did put the door but forgot to put the mattress. But it was the least of my worries this night.Baca selengkapnya

I'm all about the adrenaline. So i love the thrill of dubious airbnb bets. but it doesn't always pay off. Arrived at 1am after the 6h plane delay and got stood up by the host. Тоugh luck!! But the driver was super nice and drove us around to find another hotel. But it was Chinese New Years. Double tough luck. Found a room after a couple hours (it's in the next post) of door knocking. In many ways, this first experience was very representative of the polarizing encounters with Filipinos - one minute you'd be dealing with a drunk, gambling, fighting rooster raising, cat-calling miserable asshole, the other you'd be completely taken aback by stangers with boundless kindness and altruism, going far beyond was most mothers would do for their own children (not mine though, mine's the best).

But the ants!!! The ants! They are everywhere!!

And in general I must say that all Philippines accommodations feel like Soviet "санаторий".

    Oasis Resort&Spa

When Joven told me, "what we do here it's not a business, it's a labor of love", i'll admit i kinda wanted to laugh. I'm a cynical asshole, screw you. His place was brand new, and clearly, so was the staff. But you know what, once i got the ding-dong fever and became confined to my room for a week, i was really really glad to be there. From staff they turned to family, started making me daily herbal potions, bringing me medicine, a doctor, blankets, checking in on my every day, finding me a doctor, going grocery shopping and with so much kindness and genuine care, i realized that Joven was right, and i was too much of an asshole to even understand him.
Even Joven's dogs accompanied us to the beach and attempted to rescue us when we would snorkel a bit too far. It's a hell of a surprise to see a dog underwater when snorkeling 100m out. Goes to tell you how much love and caring was going on there.
This place was a breath of fresh air and a salvation on the dump (literally) that is the paradise island of Boracay.

Everything, absolutely everything went wrong in this country for us. Whether it was bad luck or not, but we will definitely remember it.

The resort itself was nice, at least it was further from the rest of the horror. It was like soviet "пансионат" more than a resort. The spa part in the name was represented by the little sweet massage ladies that would come to the resort as a complimentary package for the guests. And people working here were so sweet trying their best, but completely incompetent in the cutest way possible.

They had two dogs that would run with you to the beach and make sure you are safe swimming otherwise they would swim after you trying to rescue. I have never seen dogs swimming so far in the waves.

The staff just loved to put YouTube pop music videos on the laptop in the reception area and sing along like some version of karaoke.
At the end if not for this place, a little spot of relieve, we wouldn't survive Boracay.

ADVICE: never ever ever ever go to Boracay. Ever!

The dengue paranoia got bad, so we checked into a place with more security. Some ex-colonial mansion thingy - you can bet those colonial degenerates are always packing heat. And those sweet hunting jackets and matching hats.Baca selengkapnya

    5 nights!!!

Have you ever spent a night in a real live malaria hospital? In the world of quirky unique stays, this one is unprecedented - diagnosis of sickness not needed - the owners are kindly renting out spare rooms for a not-at-all-exhorbitant 20$/night. None of the usual boring stuff like cleaning rooms, mosquito nets or hot water here; here you get to experience the thrill of malaria swarms, unannounced (to the guests - the employees had all safely evacuated) chemical fumigation of the building, cockroaches, rats the size of cats and the mysterious worms that grew out of the sink. TV had english language Nat Geo, so who cares.Baca selengkapnya

  • JungleTrek, JungleTrek, in Bukit Lawang

    Thomas' Retreat
    Mar 13-15, 2016
    2 nights

I pride myself on my knowledge of flora and fauna - no fancy college learning will get you the kind of experience i get from my daily 2hrs of NatGeo Wild - but what the flying squirrel, Bukit Lawang! Since when do orang-outans, those lovable jazz-singing, cigarette smoking, funny face-making gingers stalk and bite tourists in the jungle. Well meet Mina the orang-outan. some say it was 100, others swear at least a thousand, but no matter how many jungle trekking guides get bitten, the queen reigns supreme. Like a highway bandit out of robin hood, she waits for you and demands her tax: everything you got that i can eat. or i bite. maybe i'll still nibble a bit. just to see. That being said, while i love to judge a people based on the actions of a few rogue elements, i have to say that Mina's peers were delightful creatures and quite inquisitive at the sound of a mango. It's probably not recommended to feed the monkeys. Definitely not. It's a gateway larceny - first food, then they realize cigarette and liquor are fun too, and cash works wells, which then leads to gambling, rehab, finding religion and death. Do do it. But what kind of monster can resist those big man-like eyes. And those monkey babies damnit. It takes a cold cold soul to stare at a little branch-acrobat and not give him the food.Baca selengkapnya
