• Frankfurt Day 2.2

    27. November in Deutschland ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Our tour continued to Romerberg Square where probably the main Christmas market was. It was really busy last night so we didn’t explore that much, but much less crowded this afternoon so we could see all the things. The Rathaus is on the one side of the square and half timbered houses on the other with a church on the far side. It is a very nice area of town!

Then on to the new old town - an area that was destroyed in WWII, but was rebuilt trying to use original materials and make it look like it did, but also new. It was interesting because it does look old and new at the same time. Really pretty and not many people were wandering there. There is also an old archeological ruin of a church in the area and then the cathedral (which apparently isn’t really a cathedral, but everyone calls it that). It is where Holy Roman Empire coronations took place! 10 Kings were crowded there! If not for that walking tour blog I would never have known as it didn’t say anything about that inside. It wasn’t the most ornate inside, but still enjoyed having a peek.

Then we went down one of the most interesting streets I never would have turned down without the tour - Saalgasse. So these houses are also destroyed in the war, but in the 80’s when they were rebuilding they hired a bunch of postmodern architects to build the buildings so each of them is very different and fun. It was really fun walking down the street and looking at all the fun buildings! It was a tiny street between two we had walked down yesterday and close to the water so I probably would have walked right by it without noticing it had it not been pointed out. This was probably my favorite stop of the day as I loved all the interesting architecture!
