  • Day 52 - Exploring Peterhead

    Known as the ‘Blue Toon’ after the blue knitted stockings and jerseys worn by the local fisherman. We are side to on a pontoon in the quiet marina, a lovely change from being rafted up for the last week. Relaxing day getting the boat organised and planning the next trip.Read more

  • Day 51 - Passage to Peterhead

    Left Arbroath at 7am, as soon as we left the harbour spotted four dolphins. Grey and rainy morning and motor sailed up past Stonehaven. The sun came out just before Aberdeen. The passage with four other boats, Nell took the lead, followed by TUI, us, and Freyah. The race to get into Peterhead. Last one in buys the beers!Read more

  • Day 50 - Seaton Cliffs Walk

    A fantastic walk along the cliffs with breathtaking views. We climbed down to the beach and found a sea cave. Strawberries growing in poly tunnels in the fields above. Headed to Cels on the way back for Smokies and other savoury treats for tomorrow’s passage.Read more

  • Day 49 - Exploring Arbroath

    Rafted up next to Trawler Nell with Jonas from Holland the outside of us. Rain and wind today, so hunkering down. Arbroath is famous for three main things, Arbroath Smokies, Aberdeen Angus steak and the signing of the independence treaty in 1320 at Arbroath Abbey.Read more

  • Day 48 - Passage to Arbroath

    An early start to head up to Arbroath. crossing the Firth of Forth past Edinburgh. The passage took us between the Isle of May and a wind farm and then past St Andrews and Dundee. With tide and a slight wind we motor sailed again, got up to 7.2 knots! The sun came out and we spotted bottle nosed dolphins!Read more

  • Day 47- Lazy Sunday

    A chilled Sunday, the surrounding boats left this morning so just us on the pontoon. Relaxing day for us. Usual day for Basil, eating, balling, sleeping, repeat. It’s a dog’s life! Early dinner and getting ready for next leg to Arbroath. Rafted next to us is TUI, also from Titchmarsh marina. Martin the skipper I met at the college restaurant!Read more

  • Day 46 - New friends & Farewells

    Another great coastal walk and lunch at Eyemouth Golf Club. Scampi recommended to us by Jordan, did not disappoint. Trawler Nell our buddy boat leaves in the morning to head off up to Arbroath, we will, I hope meet up with Chris, Sally and Diesel again later on in our trip…..someplace, sometime.Read more

  • Day 45 - Winds and rough seas

    Meant we had a disturbed night sleep and are not moving on for a few days yet. The Eyemouth disaster was a severe European windstorm that struck the south-eastern coast of Scotland on 14 October 1881. One hundred and eighty-nine fishermen, most of whom were from Eyemouth, were drowned. The memorial represents the widows & bairns left behind. So sad.Read more

  • Day 44 - Rock pools & Old friends

    Rock pools are often described as "old friends" because they offer a consistent, nostalgic connection to the coast, where, twice a day, the receding tide reveals a hidden, familiar world of marine life.
    Met Mhairi for coffee this morning, we worked together in Val d’Isere over 30 years ago, so lovely to reconnect.

  • Day 43 - Jobs and fixing things

    Captain had a busy morning fixing things, a water leak (very important) a hatch, adjusted the cockpit cover and changed the dinghy carburettor. I did laundry, food shopping and bed making. Pink jobs, blue jobs…..not hugely pc but it works for us. Pan-fried Seabass from D R Collin Fish for dinner, after a pint at The Sun. Cheers!Read more

  • Day 42 - Walk to St Abbs

    A coastal walk from Eyemouth to St Abbs via Coldringham Bay. Rugged cliffs, stunning coves and beaches. St Abbs is twinned with ‘New Asgard’ as it was the location in filming of the Avengers Endgame. A welll earned Cullen skink and Crab roll at the cafe in St Abbs.Read more

  • Day 41 - Exploring Eyemouth

    May 11 in Scotland ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

    Due to its proximity to the border and the continent, Eyemouth was notorious for smuggling tea and spirits in the 18th century. An historic fishing town with a natural harbour. Some great little shops and restaurants and the all important beach for Basil to go balling. Windy and grey here, we will hunker down and wait for a weather window.Read more

  • Day 40 - Passage to Eyemouth

    A two-hour motor sail up the coast into Eyemouth. We have made it to Scotland! The landscape changed as we moved from England to Scotland dramatic scenery, rugged cliffs and green fields. Ann & Chris are driving up to visit for the afternoon and evening.Read more

  • Day 39 - A rainy day

    Letting the rain wash away your worries. Or in our case walking in the rain for 40 minutes to wash away the nasty, stinky stuff Basil rolled in the other day from our blankets and towels!! With the laundry done and a few bits of shopping we are ready to move on again. A curry from Zhal Khan and a few episodes of Vikings, a cosy Saturday night in.Read more

  • Day 38 - Exploring Berwick

    Birthplace of my Granny Pat, we had to stop here. Charming place with some great shops and eateries. Some beach balling to tire out Basil, followed by coffee and a peruse of the shops. A few purchases made for Captain Matt’s birthday today. Live music and tapas at Repas 7 later.Read more

  • Day 37 - Passage to Berwick

    A walk around Holy Island this morning then breakfast before leaving to go North to Berwick. Had to arrive after 3pm to have enough water to get into the harbour .Very bumpy start against tide getting out of Holy Island but got into Berwick about 3.30pm. We are rafted up with two other boats, so a bit of a mission getting Basil ashore.Read more

  • Day 36 - Passage to Holy Island

    A bumpy start to the journey and not enough wind to sail. Along the coast past the beautiful Farne Islands and past Beadnelll Bay to Holy Island. We decided to drop anchor and stay at this amazing place for the night. Looking forward to a stunning sunset later.Read more

  • Day 35 - Sampling the local produce

    Lunch at The Fish Shack on the Harbour after two glowing reviews. It did not disappoint, we shared a few small plates, all were delicious. Deep fried whitebait bao bun, Fish cake with salsa and Sardines on toast. A visit to The Amble Butcher for a couple of their famous steak pies on the way back to the boat. Ballast on the boat, will not be a problem!Read more

  • Day 34 - Exploring Warkworth

    A morning walk along the river to Warkworth. A great lunch with Chris & Sally at Bertram’s, named after the grief-stricken Sir Bertram of Bothal who gave up his land and wealth and lived as a hermit on the cliff side. Dinghy ride across from the marina to the fabulous and deserted Warkworth beach. One very happy Basil (and Captain who successfully fixed the outboard).Read more

  • Day 33 - Rain stops play

    A total washout today meant a day of games and reading and relaxing. Short walks for Basil, and a brief visit to Coquet Yacht Club for a pint. Monopoly won by Captain Matt, followed by a win by Man Utd against Liverpool has made him a very happy man. A very good start to the birthday week!Read more

  • Day 32 - Passage to Amble

    Everything aligned today and we sailed up the coast to Amble. Past the beautiful Coquet Island, spotted some puffins. Anchored just off the beach until we could get into the Marina at 1.30pm. Sat on the River Coquet, the marina is located at the start of Northumberland’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and claims to be the ‘friendliest port in England’.Read more

  • Day 31 - Passage to Blyth

    Early departure to get out of the lock and catch the tide up to Blyth. Sunny and calm motor along the coast past South and North Shields and Whitley Bay. Gorgeous Northumberland beaches and a topless fisherman, true grit and resilience. We are definitely up North now.Read more

  • Day 29 - Passage to Hartlepool

    Left Whitby in time for the 1.30pm bridge opening. With buddy boat Nell, who proceeded to overtake as soon as we left the harbour. Against tide, wind behind us and just managed to make it into the lock at Hartlepool before the last one at 6.30pm. Phew! Tide and time, we always seem to be up against something, that’s sailing!!Read more

  • Day 28 - Goathland Walk

    Basil had a groom this morning at Scruffy Pets Parlour, we then got the bus to Goathland with Chris, Sally & Diesel the Border Terrier. Lovely walk followed by tea and cake (not sure about my Dark gingerbread cake with Wensleydale cheese choice). Perfect afternoon.Read more
