Day 22, Racha: History & Beauty

Racha is a more remote region in Georgia, known for its mountains, river, fall color, and wine (more on that later). We stayed in Oni, a small town whose population until the 1990’s was half Jewish. Jews arrived in Georgia in the 5th century BC after Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians. Their communities thrived without experiencing any pogroms or persecution. Jews immigrated to Israel after the dissolution of the Soviet Union when Georgia experienced civil war. Oni never recovered from such a mass exodus but the Jews left behind a magnificent synagogue.Lue lisää
