Phillip as official driver and me the new navigator with a new app WAZE - the app used by all the newly discovered Uber drivers! Yep we are no official Uber fans!! Today freeway i55 loafs of traffic and sitting in the middle lane is safest!! Dodged the freeway to go some lesser roads!. Joliet was our first discovery! Stopped at Route 66 park for the obligatory ice cream @ Rich & Creamy on N Broadway,Joliet. Walk up to a very small window- something like food would be passed through in a prison! Mixed choc @ vanilla was the order of the day!! This town is famous for the filming of the Blues Bros movie. In the distant we could’ve the old prison where the movie began? Further on driving through Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve - 19,000 acres of prairie like farming- much like the 1800’s. not sue what crops grains !- barley?
Saw the giant Muffler. Man in Wilmington- a bit like the bid Prawn , merino etc in Australia .
Onwards to Gardner to see a horse drawn street car diner used up until 1932.
Nearby was a two cell gaol which was often used to house ‘hobos’ during the tough years (depression) to keep. them safe.
Dwight gave us Ambler’s Texaco Gas Station complete with old pumps, helpful staff and a couple of vintage cars completing Route 66
Pontiac next stop swinging bridges over Vermillion River running through a lively green space.some locals fishing and a walk along a paved road which is most unusual!! Time to find the renowned street mural which were worth the walk !As was Pub 13 on W Howard St to see and hear some locals!
