  • Leaving Camp

    January 8, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

This morning we completed the pack up of the stage into the truck (the word lorry isn't used here apparently). We then headed for a team brunch in Cambridge. The portaloo was tied up to be transported to its next home and I discovered I don't have Covid (for now) which is a relief as about 50% of the team do!Read more

  • Te Papa Tongarewa Museum of New Zealand

    January 9, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 21 °C

My final stop was at the Museum of New Zealand! With 6 floors of exhibits around nature, war, art, culture and much more! One of the most ancient artefacts was the English version of the treaty between the Maori's and the British ratified in 1840 which was defaced by protestors last month on 11 December and hasn't been cleaned! There was also an outdoor terrace for more views over the harbour.Read more

  • Queen Charlotte Track Day 1

    January 10, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Day 1 of the track was absolutely stunning! I covered just under 17km in 3 and a quarter hours with 520m of elevation gain. The paths today were very twisty and turny starting with a steady ascent then steady descent. Views were amazing!!!Read more

  • Paddleboarding

    January 10, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

I checked into my accomodation at Furneaux Lodge to discover they offered free paddleboarding! So I thought it would be rude not to go for a paddle. The number of jellyfish in the water was crazy so I didn't dare risk falling in!Read more

  • Evening at Furneaux Lodge

    January 10, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

I wound down from the days walking with some time in the hammock before sitting down for dinner and a glass of rose! The region of Marlborough is world renowned for its wine so a wine it had to be.

  • Queen Charlotte Track Day 2

    January 11, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

This morning I woke up in no hurry at all as the second day of the QCT is the easiest of them all! With very little ascent and only 12km of distance the walking took me around 2.5 hours. I was slowed down by walking half of the day with a Scottish couple who I'd briefly spoken to last night but the company was nice!Read more

  • Punga Cove

    January 11, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

This evening I am staying at Punga Cove! I have a cabin to myself with an amazing view if you walk 20ft down the balcony. There is a pool, two hot tubs, hammocks, paddleboards and kayaks to be enjoyed here and all for free! For dinner I had the seafood lasagna washed down with two glasses of rose.Read more

  • QCT Day 3 Morning

    January 12, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Day 3 was off to a good start with a tasty breakfast ahead of what is the longest, hilliest and therefore most difficult day of the track. The views however were incredible as the track runs along the top of the hills. Had to separate today into 3 parts and just so many photos to share!Read more

  • QCT Day 3 Afternoon

    January 12, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The views in the afternoon were equally as stunning as in the morning! Made it to my accomodation a smidge under the 25km mark. Now to relax!

  • QCT Day 3 Evening

    January 12, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This evening I checked into my 5 person shared accomodation to discover I was the only person staying there! I spoke to the owner and she said this was highly unusual and the 3 previous nights had been completely full!

I then called the resort next door to book a table for dinner, only to be informed that there were none available. I therefore asked if there was anywhere else nearby to eat and was recommended Punga Cove, the place I'd eaten the night before and just walked 25km from. The only realistic option was to eat pasta, pasta sauce and beans found in the cupboard of my accomodation.

Before succumbing to this fate I thought I'd head down to the resort anyway to enjoy the views out to the sounds and maybe try and walk in to the restaurant. However, there was still no space for me in the restaurant but I was able sit in the huge bar area and order bar snacks. Thankfully the bar snacks included fries and also a fish bowl. So I ordered one of each and when they arrived it could have easily fed two people! So all worked out well in the end!

  • QCT Day 4

    January 13, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Day 4 of the track began with an unrelenting ascent from sea level up to the peak of the hills. The track followed the ridgeline for a while before heading sharply downhill, the steadily back uphill and then steadily downhill again towards the finish.Read more

  • QCT Finish Line

    January 13, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Early in the afternoon I reached the jetty of Anakiwa which marks the finishing line for the track! 74.4km, 2,358m elevation gain completed in 14hr 17m of walking. What a great experience!

Shortly before 4pm, the ferry departed from Anakiwa back to Picton.Read more

  • Evening in Picton

    January 13, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After arriving in Picton, checking in, washing and hanging out all of my clothes it was time to hit the town!

The place I went for dinner had a group playing, and the very first song they played was 'Ferry Across the Mersey'. I couldn't believe it!

After a few drinks there I headed next door to an Irish bar which also had a group on. Ended up getting into bed just before midnight.
