  • Leaving Pacific Harbour

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

This morning I leave Pacific Harbour to head for Fiji's capital city of Suva! The last two nights I've spent in the spare room of a lady called Charlotte who is in her mid-80s! By far the nicest accomodation I've had so far with an en suite, views out to the 18th hole of the local golf course, Christmas decorations and an electric front gate! I am somewhat sad to move on but back to the real Fiji we go.Read more

  • Bus to Suva

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

The bus to Suva took around 90 minutes and cost $6FJD (£2.25). The scenery was wonderful apart from passing a car that had overturned into a ditch just minutes before us passing.

  • Fiji Parliament

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

After dropping my bags at my accomodation I headed out into the afternoon sun to explore the landmarks nearby, first up being the Fiji Parliament building. Unfortunately it was closed to tours due to renovations so I had to stay outside and marvel at the car parking spaces for the Prime Minister and leader of the opposition!Read more

  • Thurstaston Gardens

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

It seems to be some sort of graduation day today so the gardens were flooding with graduates having their pictures taking. The trees to the gardens were also flooded with hundreds of huge bats hanging from the top branches!Read more

  • Checking Into Suva

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

It was now time to check into my accomodation! After being asked 'which room number have you booked' ??? I was offered a free upgrade to a room upstairs. To my absolute delight, this room came with many things I had forgotten actually existed such as electricity, hot water, light bulbs, soap, air conditioning, a microwave, a fridge, a toaster and a television. Moving up in the world!Read more

  • Fiji Museum

    December 13, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

After checking in I headed out to the Fiji Museum, a small but interesting place all about the origins of the islands (including Britain's influence) and the ongoing impact of climate change on the islands.Read more

  • Colo-I-Suva Forest Park

    December 14, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

This morning I headed to Suva bus station to catch the bus to Colo-I-Suva Forest Park. I've become accustomed to buses here having doors but choosing to never actually close them, with no seat belts to keep you inside either. The park was a labyrinth of tracks and trails, many of which led to dead ends so it was fun having to guess which way to go next since the map provided was useless. A highly enjoyable and scenic adventure!Read more

  • Cinema & McDonalds

    December 14, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

To finish off the afternoon I treated myself to a sit down in an air conditioned room at the cinema! I watched Godzilla Minus One which was highly enjoyable and cost just $7.50FJD (£2.82). The entire film was in Japanese but thankfully had English subtitles otherwise I'd have been in trouble. I then headed just down the road to McDonalds for 10 chicken nuggets and a large chips as a rare taste of home!Read more

  • Flying to Taveuni Island

    December 15, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

This morning I packed up from my 'luxurious' room in Suva and headed to the airport. I was delighted to be boarding a Viking DHC-6 400 Twin Otter which consisted of around 20 seats (in a 1 2 formation) of which only 13 were occupied. Access to the cockpit was also freely available, you just had to be sure to crouch so you didn't hit your head on the ceiling. There was no on-board toilet and they even weighed every passenger with their baggage!Read more

  • Exploring the Area

    December 15, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Once I'd settled in and sorted a few logistical things (laundry, activities etc) I set off on a half hour walk to the local supermarket. I took a few detours on the way to scout out the local beaches and resorts to identify any potential spots for the next couple of days.Read more

  • Quiet Day

    December 16, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Today I had a quiet day at the lodge! I spent some time in the pool and by the pool, reading, listening to music and trying to improve my tan! It rained on and off a lot of the afternoon so I was eventually forced to move inside!Read more

  • Rainy Trip to the Beach

    December 17, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

I'd heard that it rains a lot in Eastern Fiji (particularly as its wet season) and its certainly living up to its name! After torrential downpours this morning I thought the rain might be done for the day but nope as soon as I arrive at the beach it starts lashing down again! The sky looks ominous too. May need to retreat back to the undercover comforts of the Lodge which thankfully is only a five minute walk. Also, if I thought that frog in the shower was big the other day, look at the size of this thing I found squashed on the road!!!Read more

  • Chilled Day

    December 17, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Another chilled day today thanks to the rain so plenty more reading and catching up on the overnight footie back home! I've also put together an action plan to see all of the islands main attractions tomorrow come rain or shine. Lamb shank and mash for dinner!Read more

  • Hire Car

    December 18, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Today I hired a car to help make sure I could see everything I wanted to on the island all in a single day! So this Toyota Prius would be my vessel for the day!

  • Lavuna Coastal Path

    December 18, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

The first stop of the day with the Lavuna Coastal Path! En route I had to stop for petrol (as the tank was almost empty!) and then it was just under an hours drive along the twisting pot hole'd roads of the North and North East Coast of the island.

Once I'd arrived it was a $30FJD entry fee (about £11) to walk the path. The route was 5km each way and reasonably flat! The only obstacles being a number of overflowing streams and rivers. So 5 times I had to take my shoes and socks off including 2 times I had to change into my swimming trunks, this was when crossing the forceful deep stream with a rope across to cling onto.

At the end of the path you're treated to the Wainibau Waterfall. As I reached the end point it began to rain quite heavy so I scarpered back the way I'd came with the enslaught from tje rain only lasting around 15 minutes.

  • Waitavala Water Slides

    December 18, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Next up was the Waitavala water slides! These natural water slides have formed over many years, with the sheer force of the water passing over the rocks smoothing them down into a slippery slide like surface!

If you're going to get wet... go swimming! So of course I gave it a go myself, guided by a couple of local kids. 2 goes from top to bottom was enough for me and I was happy to leave with my limbs unbroken and my brain unconcussed.

For mum reading this, yes there were a number of lifeguards present, a full risk assessment had been performed on every slide, there was a traffic light system to ensure no collisions, a first aid kit was on hand and I wore my armbands 🤥.

This was my last proper stop of the day, other than an ATM which shortchanged me to the tune of $150FJD (or I've been robbed), with about 115km clocked up in total for the day!

  • Leaving Tavueni Island

    December 19, 2023 in Fiji ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

The time has come to leave Taveuni Island! I boarded at the tiny 'airport' once again onto an equally as tiny plane. The flight took around 1hr 20 mins but was safe and sound, just very loud!
