  • Ferry to Roatan

    9. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

After an 8.5 hour shuttle ride through Guatemala and Honduras we made it to La Ceiba ferry terminal with plenty of time to spare before our ferry to Roatan!

Almost everyone else on our shuttle was going to Roatan's neighbouring island of Utila. Unfortunately for those people the ferry had been cancelled due to maintenance so they will have had to stay in La Ceiba for the night.

Despite the ferry being a large one, the crossing was very choppy, but thankfully we'd planned ahead with sea sickness tablets.

Once we'd landed on the shores of Roatan we took a taxi to our hostel, where we were treated to a fish, rice and vegetable dinner which was very nice, although it took about 3 hours to prepare and we just wanted to go to sleep by the time in was served!

  • Morning in Roatan

    10. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

After a well deserved good night's sleep we set off on a hunt for a) breakfast and b) somewhere to watch Liverpool v Man City.

Breakfast came easily in the form of $2 'baleadas' from an establishment recommended by our hostel host.

Also close to the hostel is 'Happy Harry's' who had a big screen. It was a challenge to find the right channel until they just gave us the remote and we were able to find Sky Sports in a matter of seconds.

  • Sunset in Roatan

    10. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

This evening we headed back to Half Moon Bay to Sundowners Beach Bar for happy hour sunset cocktails! Although there was a palm tree in the way we still had a prime viewing spot over the bay for sunset.

After a few hours here we then moved on to a local place for pizza and another drink before calling it a day.

  • Morning in Roatan

    11. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

This morning we headed out to briefly meet up with Danny's relative Gaynor at her dive shop! She was delighted to see us and helped us put a plan together for the rest of the week to make the most of our time on the island.

Gaynor was working today so me and Danny then went for some breakfast overlooking the harbour before jumping on a water taxi taking us around the corner to West Bay.

  • West Bay

    11. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We spent the afternoon close to the tip of the island at West Bay which is a great snorkelling spot! It also has the densest population of Americans I've ever known, including having been to America.

We took it in turns to snorkel using equipment borrowed from our hostel then found a sunbed to rest up for a few hours.

We then took the water taxi back to West End before heading out for dinner and a few drinks. To our overwhelming disappointment the chippy we've been eyeing up still isn't open, but we did end up finding a bar with $2 beers and $3 tequilas. We also spent over an hour sharing our table with an older Canadian couple, each sharing our travel experiences.

    11. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Here's my attempt to take some pictures of the coral at West Bay. Not the best I'll be honest but I can say that the corals were huge and so close to the surface that you couldn't swim through many places. There were also many varieties of tropical fish to enjoy.Lue lisää

To finish the daytime activities, Gaynor dropped us off at South Shore Canopy Ziplines. There were 11 ziplines in total which meandered back and forth through the jungle with some excellent views out to sea!

This was great fun and our guides were a good laugh too.

  • Boat Tour

    13. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

Our first proper stop of the day was for a long-boat tour! The three of us hopped into a boat with our captain who guided us through the Oak Ridge area.

It was an absolutely stunning adventure through the area where we observed the locals going about their daily business, including children driving their own boat to school!

There were also long carved out Mangrove Tree paths to enable boats to get from place to place. These were both very picturesque but also provided some shade.

At around lunchtime we stopped off at an ocean bar at Camp Bay. Not only were the views out to sea brilliant but there were also dozens of hummingbirds buzzing around!

After this we set back off on the road and before long stopped off at the top of a hill, with a viewpoint baring 5 flags (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica), flags that we're now just about able to tell the difference between!Lue lisää

  • Staying at Jackie's

    13. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 28 °C

For the next two nights we're staying at Jackie's house (Gaynor's neighbour) whilst she is away. Her place is basic (although less basic than were used to) and absolutely lovely!

Danny immediately befriended the many dogs of Jackie and Gaynor's and I was happy for him to absorb their attention.

We seized the opportunity to do some washing, sit on a couch, and watch Karl Pilkington and Impractical Jokers clips on YouTube. Sometimes it's the simple things!

  • Scuba Diving

    14. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 27 °C

Today was a real trip highlight! Courtesy of Gaynor's diving school (Coconut Tree Divers) we had our own 2-to-1 introduction to diving day!

First up we were taken through the basics in shallow water at the beach. It didn't take us long to pick up the required skills to be ready for a dive.

After a break we then headed a little further out on the boat. Although we don't have any pictures of our actual dive, I've attached a picture of the area it was in.

The area was full of coral and fish, but I think funniest of all was seeing each other on the ocean floor in diving gear like something out of Mission Impossible, a long way from Mr Syed's year 8 maths class!

We were able to go down to 40ft deep and our underwater escapade lasted 52 minutes without rising above the surface once!

We had a great time and it was a big box ticked in trying something we've both been wanting to do for a while. Thanks to Gaynor and her expert guide for such a wonderful day!

  • Leaving Roatan

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

After 6 wonderful nights on this beautiful island its time to leave! We had a chilled morning watch the horse racing at Cheltenham and a few other bits before heading for the ferry terminal.

  • Evening in Utila

    15. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

Our next destination is Roatan's smaller neighbour, Utila!

Said to be a cheaper, younger and less American version of Roatan our expectations were high!

We spent the night rolling from bustling bar to bustling bar and even bumped into the 6/7 people who we shared a shuttle to the ferry dock with last week! They all took the ferry to Utila whereas we went to Roatan but we were reunited as one tonight.

Our first proper night out in a while and we didn't end up rolling back in until the early hours. Utila night one was a good one!

We sat on the dock outside our hostel whilst watching Tranmere cling on to a 1-0 lead to claim the 3 points, a great start to the day! We also enjoyed a cooked breakfast from the hostel in the meantime.

After this we ventured across the road for Fulham v Tottenham, before eventually making it to the beach for a few hours.

  • Longggg Travel Day

    18. maaliskuuta 2024, Honduras ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Today was an extremely long travel day. Our alarm went off at 5:30am so that we could catch the 7:00am ferry from Utila to mainland Honduras. Catching the early ferry meant we could board a shuttle bus to Antigua in Guatemala.

On the ferry we met a very scouse Evertonian who was telling us about how he'd been robbed on the island amongst various other travel adventures.

There were no such characters on our bus, apart from the driver who decided to evade a traffic jam by driving in the dark on the wrong side of a twisting road. We did have to give way to a few lorries along the way but we navigated the jam unharmed and saved a lot of time!

At one point late in the journey I thought the roof was leaking as I could feel droplets landing on my bare arms. Turns out it wasn't a roof leak, but in fact the bus drivers friend, being sick out (and in) of the front window. The driver had to clean the outside of the bus at a service station.

To top it all off, as we pulled up to our hostel in Antigua at half past midnight, I discovered the cooking oil in our food bag had emptied itself, which in the dark had then ended up on my shorts, shirt and man bag.

Eventually we climbed into bed at 1:30am, after standing at the hostel sink wiping oil off of, US Dollars, Guatemalan Quetzals, portable chargers, insect cream tubes, and all the other contents of the bags.

Climbing into bed was harder for Dan as he was on the third tier of his bunk bed. The silver lining of all this being that the hostel is actually lovely so we had a good night's sleep (until the church bells opposite rang 20+ times at each of 6am, 6:15am and 6:30am).
