• Day 11 Glacier Bay National Park Part 1

    September 23 in the United States 🌧 4 °C

We decided on another room-service breakfast this morning, although Lara and Ian’s arrived considerably later than it should have! An apology followed, along with some rather lovely strawberry-dipped chocolates later in the day — so all was forgiven! Graham was struggling a little this morning, though, and in true Graham style, he decided to empty the entire tissue box in their cabin… ensuring that a fresh one would soon be delivered! 😂

Today was Glacier Bay day, and we were treated to classic Alaskan weather — overcast skies, drizzle and low-hanging mist as we slowly made our way into the fjords. Earlier that morning, Park Rangers and Huna Tlingit guides had boarded the ship, sharing fascinating stories about the land, its wildlife and the ancient ice as we entered the bay.

As we travelled deeper into Glacier Bay, the gloomy weather was soon forgotten when we started spotting wildlife out on the water. We watched an adorable sea otter floating lazily on its back, completely unfazed by the enormous ship passing by, while harbour seals popped their heads above the surface and rested on the floating ice. It was lovely to watch them going about their day as though we weren’t even there.

We headed further into the John Hopkins Inlet and ventured out onto the deck for the journey. It was noticeably colder, the water had taken on the most beautiful green colour, and waterfalls seemed to appear around every corner as we got closer to the glacier. Jono, meanwhile, was still proudly wearing his shorts — prompting quite a few people on board to correctly guess that he used to be a postman! 😂
