    June 8, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We are spending the weekend trying out the car with all the gear for Mark’s excursion to France and Italy. Yesterday, We incorporated a visit to the Bovey Tracey high-end Arts Festival, where we visited my friend Michelle Griffiths, who is renowned for her Japanese Shibori textile and sculptural techniques. She had a stand there. We thoroughly enjoyed walking around, looking at all the beautiful items, and chatting with artists, printmakers, and crafters. We enjoyed lunch out in the open, listening to folk bands and watching the hordes of people perusing the stalls. Note photo, of me modelling one of Michelle pieces.Read more

After a few hours at the Art festival we found ourselves at a lovely, spotlessly clean campsite named Oakmoor. Here, Mark set up his tent. Dinner was successful, with steak and salad cooked on his newly acquired, tiniest BBQ stove (Feuerhand tabletop tamber grill) I have ever seen. This BBQ is highly recommended, very effective, and efficient in all aspects. We settled with chilled wine from the fridge and ate strawberries while we read on our devices until the midges started to say hello!

The real adventure began when we tried to get into bed. It was a hilarious challenge, but once settled, it was surprisingly comfy. Plus, we had a perfect view of the stars through the rooftop. We've now decided that a rooftop tent might be the way to go for our next trip 😂 🤔

  • Bel Tor

    June 9, 2024 in England ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

The morning at Oakmoor campsite greeted us with sunshine and a brisk wind, perfect for an adventure! We set our sights on Wistman's Wood, but couldn't resist a stop at Bel Tor, one of Dartmoor's stunning granite tors. The drive was rewarded by traversing wonderful, magical bridges, each echoing a past life. The views were absolutely spectacular! The rolling hills and rugged landscape brought back memories of my childhood in South Wales.

We climbed up to Bel Tor and were rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. I only wished I'd brought my camera to capture the beauty of the plants and the Dartmoor ponies. Next time, I'll be sure to remember it! 🌞🍃📸

  • Wistman's Wood (Nature Reserve)

    June 9, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The drive from Bel Tor to Wistman’s Wood was breathtakingly beautiful. We passed charming thatched cottages and roadsides bursting with wildflowers. We stopped at a lovely old pub and I enjoyed sparkling water with lemon, while Mark savoured a half pint of local draft beer.
Once we arrived at the starting point for the walk to Wistman’s Wood, the adventure truly began. The gentle walk through the rugged landscape was filled with incredible flora and fauna. I stood in awe as we reached Wistman’s Wood, one of the UK's only two temperate rainforests. The ancient forest, with its stunted oak trees shaped by the cold climate of the 15th century, was mesmerising. It’s home to globally rare lichens with fascinating names like horsehair lichen, tumbling kittens, and string of sausages to name a few.
Peering into the twisted, gnarly branches heavily covered in these critically endangered lichens was oddly beautiful. I wished I had brought my proper camera, though Mark took some fantastic photos to capture the magic. We will definitely return, as I’m sure the visual display of this place is spectacular in every season.
After our enchanting walk, we refreshed ourselves at the Two Bridges Hotel before embarking on the long journey home, already planning our next visit to this magical place.
