• Caucasus Churches

    The simple, yet elegant, design of the stone Caucasus churches captivate me. Their inside walls soar to domed ceilings, and many are decorated with beautiful frescoes. Sadly, many frescoes destroyed by Stalin who demanded all church art be smothered in white paint, in case people were spiritually tempted to revolt against the State.
    The churches are dotted on the hills and used as watchtowers and community meeting rooms as well as worship.
