• Tracking into Turkiye

John’s birthday festivities began with great excitement as the top was popped off a bottle of sparkling Armenian wine. The celebration continued with a unique ‘luggage’ cake adorned with candles, accompanied by thoughtful local gifts. As cake isn’t our usual breakfast fodder, we packed the leftovers into a Tupperware container to take on the bus when setting off towards the border.
The Turkish border, although less than a kilometre away, is closed to Armenia. As a result, we took a detour, driving back to a rural Georgian village to find an alternative route into Eastern Anatolia, The Republic of Türkiye (the new name for Turkey). Our group made the most of the journey, enjoying more birthday cake alongside traditional Turkish coffee and tea.
We are spending two nights in Kars, which gives us the opportunity to explore the area more thoroughly. After our stay in Kars, we will resume our train journeys to continue our adventure.
