    A few hours late our train limped into Ankara, the Republic’s capital. We then headed to the mausoleum and museum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, whose leadership skills took the vanquished and disintegrated Ottoman Empire forward into the unified, secular Republic that has served Turkey so well. Sadly, today Turkiye has several right-wing factions wanting to revert to a Muslim Caliphate.
    However, for the moment all is peaceful as we view Ankara’s many mosques, new football stadium and multi-national corporate buildings from our 11th floor hotel balcony.
    The world favourably judged and remembers Ataturk’s social governance skills. I wonder which of our contemporary NZ and global politicians will be historically remembered in such a positive light?
