  • Kealakekua Bay and Capt’n Cook Monument

    June 22, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We spent the day snorkeling and paddling in Kealakekua Bay. The bay is an important historic location because it marks the site where the first westerner, Captain James Cook, landed on the island of Hawaii. Cook was the first British explorer to establish contact with the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 on Kauai. Only a year later, he was killed in a skirmish with Native Hawaiians right here in Kealakekua Bay. A white obelisk on the shore of Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park memorializes his death. On the east side of the bay there is also the Hikiau heiau (sacred temple) dedicated to the Hawaiian god, Lono.Read more

  • Papakolea Green Sand Beach

    June 23, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

From the southernmost point of the US we hiked 5.5 miles to a green sand beach located in a bay cut into a side of Puʻu Mahana, a cinder cone that erupted about 50,000 years ago. The green sand is created by a common mineral in Big Island lava called olivine, which stays deposited on this beach because it is heavier than the other components of the lava. I took a bit of a tumble and lost a towel on the way, but luckily we met a very nice couple that made the hike back a lot easier!Read more

  • Volcanoes National Park

    June 24, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses 335,259 acres or about 523 square miles from the summit of Maunaloa to the sea (by comparison, the island of Oahu is 597 square miles). The Big Island consists in total of five separate volcanoes: Kohala, Mauna Kea, Hualālai, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. Mauna Kea measures 13,796 feet and is the tallest mountain in the state and the tallest sea mountain in the world. Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth in terms of volume and area covered. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of these volcanoes: Mauna Loa and Kīlauea. As the youngest and most active of the five volcanoes you can often see Kilauea’s lava either flowing into the ocean or glowing in the immense Halema’uma’u crater that crowns the park grounds.Read more

  • Thurston LavaTube

    June 24, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Nāhuku (Thurston Lava Tube), one of many such tubes on the island, was created by a river of molten lava. When a lava tube is active, lava travels along its floor at temperatures that exceed 2,000º F (1090º C). When the supply of lava stops at the end of an eruption, or if it gets diverted elsewhere, it leaves behind an empty cave.Read more
