    Today was a transfer day, which sounds simple until you add two trains, excess luggage, and Japan’s intricate slipper etiquette. We left Taneichi, stored our extra bags at Kuji Station, and discovered a grocery store so well stocked that lunch became an impromptu feast of French bread, cheddar, cooked salmon, and chicken. Cindy’s baguette rode south sticking proudly out of her backpack.

    The Sanriku Railway carried us to Tanohata, where our room at Hotel Ragaso overlooks a little fishing harbor and the blue Pacific. The bath was lovely, and we’ve settled in for a quiet evening before tomorrow’s coastal hike.

    We’re now in Sanriku Fukko National Park. Just up the coast, the Kitayamazaki cliffs rise roughly 200 meters above the sea—dramatic scenery we hope to see on foot tomorrow. For today, we’re content to admire the view from a chair, with both feet safely out of the communal slippers.
